SWAN TOLKEIN .
“WEEP FOR YOURSELF, MY MAN” You'll never be what is in your heart
AGE. Sixteen GENDER. Female DISTRICT. Ten OCCUPATION . Shepherdess SEXUALITY. Uncertain
APPEARANCE .
“WEEP LITTLE LION MAN” You're not as brave as you were at the start
Swan is quite petite, and in all aspects the perfect little capital lady. (Most say it’s a pity she wasn’t born there.) Her mouth is one of the only things that are big. Being quite friendly (mostly), her mouth is usually always in a large smile. Her hands are small and thin like pianist hands, and her entire frame almost looks frail. She does however; spend at least more than half of her time in the fields, acting as a shepherdess. Her skin is a lovely tone of tanned olive, what might have been called Arabic if she had been born in a different time. Her eyes are a startling shade of liquid amber, with golden flecks, although it seems as if they have been glazed over with an opaque sheet. They are rather angular, and have often been referred to as catlike. Although Swan would not be able to tell you, as she has been completely blind since birth.
She is just beginning to come into her own as a woman, and as such, she is still a b-cup, but she is slowly gaining some slight curves. Her long chestnut hair falls to mid-waist. It is thick and curly, although poorly cut. Her bangs do not seem to have any rhyme or reason, and seem to cover up half her face. She stands at the height of five foot, three inches, and weighs an unhealthy one hundred and six pounds. She has little to no muscle, and does not do very well when it comes to fighting. But she does pride herself on the fact that she does not even need shoes in the winter because her feet have become so stiff from never wearing them.
Swan wears boy’s trousers, and a cotton shirt. The pants are usually rolled up to mid calf, and because she only has one pair of her clothes, they are usually rather dirty. Her father insists on her wearing a piece of black fabric across her eyes, which she dislikes. It doesn’t bother her too much being blind, but her father thinks that maybe she can gain some pity. She carries a ragged hair ribbon, in a deep shade of red that she keeps twisted around and through her hand. The ribbon is a bit ragged, and dirty, and in some places, warped and stretched.
PERSONALITY .
“RATE YOURSELF AND RAKE YOURSELF” Take all the courage you have left
Swan is a rather colourful character. She has a curiosity that can get to be rather annoying, especially since she can't see people's faces to take the hint that she should stop asking questions. She can't help the fact that she's as curious about her surroundings as other people are. She's the type of person that will ask why curiosity killed the cat, and how did curiosity do it without getting caught? On that note, she also manages to take things very literally. She doesn't really get metaphors, because most of the things people say, she has never actually seen. So saying a saying around her can be rather aggravating.
Being blind, sometimes people forget that Swan has never seen colours, but she tends to imagine them in her mind. For example, she imagines that red is like the taste of smoke, and a warm blanket, and so on. Her explanations don't make sense to those who can say, but it's sufficient that they work for her. She doesn't let being blind get her down because it's truly all she has ever known. How can someone miss what they have never had? So she finds it rather ridiculous when people make a pitied sound at seeing her black ribbon. Just because she is blind it does not mean she can't function. She can run and jump almost as well as the next person.
Swan loves to run actually. Her brother takes her to a field, points her in a direction with no obstacles, and sets her loose. Sure, she's twisted an ankle here and there, skinned her knees once, but in her opinion it's worth the pain for the joy of running. Another thing she enjoys is storytelling. She can spend hours making up tales in her head, and telling them to herself. She dreams up wild stories of dragons, the games, and freedom. Apparently it's bad to talk about freedom, you can get in trouble for it, but Swan, not being able to see coming danger talks as much as she wants.
Although it's a terrible thing, sometimes she will use her blindness to her advantage. She puts it down to normal teenage activity however and does not think much of it. She has the tendency to pretend to be tired from not being able to see, and claims head aches. She doesn't do so very often, but sometimes it can even be real. Swan will sometimes barricade herself in her rooms just because she's a bit too tired to maneuver around so carefully.
Swan also carries a lot of guilt for her mother. She was told that her mother disappeared due to depression when she was only a small baby, but she has come to, over the years, suspect that it was because of her. She still doesn't know why exactly, but she has a terrible feeling that she caused her mother's disappearance. Because of this she tries to be extra nice to her father, realizing how much he probably dislikes her. She knows as well that her brother knows the real reason why she left, but he never seems to be mad at Swan, only their mother for leaving. Swan interprets his anger to be aimed at her however, so she steps carefully around her brother as well.
HISTORY .
“WASTED ON FIXING ALL THE PROBLEMS” That you made in your own head
Swan was born to a very regular, district ten couple. Nothing was unusual or specific about them, but they did own a sheep farm. That led them to be a bit on the better side of the residents in District ten, and they felt safer having a child. So, they gave birth to a little boy named Dusk, so named due to his sandy hair and hazel eyes. They found that having a child was more difficult than expected, but in the long run it would pay off because he would be able to help on the farm. So, they decided to have another child and four years later they gave birth to a girl. The pregnancy was a difficult one, and as such the baby appeared to be rather unhealthy at first. The girl did not open her eyes for a few days, and when she did, they had an opaque glaze over them.
Terrified, they rushed their baby girl to a woman known to be good with healing, asking what was wrong. After examining the baby girl, the woman explained what was wrong. When a woman is pregnant, the baby’s eyes begin to form at the end of the first trimester and are completely formed at the end of the second. Sometime in that period, Swan’s mother caught a cold. A cold is a type of inflammatory virus. It gets in your cells and doesn’t do a lot of damage, but the problem is that the virus is everywhere in your bloodstream. Her simple virus that she may have not even been aware of was passed through her blood into Swan’s forming eyes. That tiny inflammatory virus stopped the growth of the optic nerve in both of her eyes.
Swan’s mother had been sick with a cold during the pregnancy, and knowing that she was the cause of the girl’s blindness, she fell into depression. Because of this, times grew even rougher for the family. By the time Swan was one year old, her mother was beyond help and one night she wandered out of the district. Although her husband wanted to search for her, he had two kids to take care of, and they were both five and one. Sadly, he had to let the love of his life go. It is assumed that she either died or was captured and avoxed. Although her father was severely sad, he continued to love his son and daughter, never even thinking of blaming Swan for his wife’s disappearance.
Swan grew up rather well, not realizing that because she couldn’t see she was missing out. She learned to walk and crawl blind, so her five other senses grew very sharp. She did have a few mistakes growing up, one time she got lost in the barn, the sound of the sheep overpowering her. Her father was hard put to find something that she could do easily, and it just so happened that because of her hearing she was able to easily take care of the sheep. She knew each well by sound and feel, and if her father put bells on them, she could count the sounds to make sure they were all there.
Swan never was given the privilege to attend school, seeing as she had an inability to write, but her father taught her everything he knew, whether it was farming, maths, history, or storytelling. Swan became particularly good at storytelling, and because of that she was able to make a lot of friends out of the younger children. She was never lonely growing up, but rather enjoyed her solitude. Her family was also blessed with the luck that they were completely ordinary. Her brother had never been picked for the games, and so far, she hadn’t either. But her brother worried because he was no longer of the age where he could go in her place if she was chosen, and it seemed obvious to most that Swan would never survive.
