Ness is extremely tall, standing at 5'9" and lanky, although surprisingly strong. Looking at her, you certainly wouldn't see it. Her eyes are pale blue, almost grey. Ness' hair is dark brown, and has a slight wave to it, and goes down to the middle of her back or so. Her skin is quite pale, in fact if meeting her for the first time, you might think that's she's sickly. But it's just due to the fact she's inside so often caring for her siblings, and ailing mother.

The first thing that would come across while meeting Ness, would be how caring she is. She always tires to make sure everyone around her is alright, and often puts them all before herself. She's very motherly, and for several years, has acted the part to her five younger siblings, Hilde, Renee, Curran, Armand and Trina, while their sickly mother slowly dies. She's very independent, never wanting to accept help from anyone or wanting to impose. She doesn't want to appear weak, even though caring for her family is very tiring, and she rarely has time for herself. But she's generally quite optimistic, always believing that tomorrow will be better.

For the last seven years, ever since Ness' youngest sister was born, her mother has been slowly dying from an unknown disease. Her father works extremely long shifts in the coal mines, sometimes overtime, trying to support his family, but it's still never been enough. The Stykes can't live off his salary alone, having to pay excess medical bills for Ness' mother's disease as well as food, it's just been too much. Because four of his six children are of age to be in the Reaping, he wanted to sign them up for Tesserae, but Ness wouldn't let him. She and her eldest sister, Hilde, signed up for two Tesserae each, so that her younger siblings wouldn't have to. So far, it's worked to their advantage.
