Kaleb is generally on the lower side of average. He weighs around 135 lbs, and is around five foot nine. He is skinny, with a good amount of muscle from the lumber work of district 7. While not malnourished, ever since his father’s death he has been getting thinner, making it harder to keep his muscle. Kaleb has brown eyes, and an average oval face. His hair is a light brown that is medium length, parted in the middle and feathers back, making it look as if he’s just been running and barely covers his ears.

Kaleb is slightly tanned, and tends to wear baggie pants with a tighter shirt when he can get them. This isn’t easy though, since working outside of school helping his mother tends to leave small holes in his clothes, leaving him with very few options in the means of style. Kaleb has a quick reaction time and is a quick runner who can go for long distances, but is not strong in the sense of brute strength. Because of an accident where a log fell on his left hand, Kaleb has lost the ability to make a complete fist in that hand, though this isn’t a major problem, since he’s right-handed.

Kaleb is confident when it comes to his abilities. With his job and training from his father, he knows he is able to take care of himself physically. This doesn’t mean that Kaleb is an optimist. In public, he seems neutral, even pessimistic about life. But around people he trusts or thinks he can trust, he tends to look at the brighter side of life. Kaleb tries to please other people, not just with his own actions, but tries to cheer them up with a positive outlook. He may not believe the words he uses to comfort people, but seeing others happy makes him feel better.

Kaleb is heavily disillusioned about the Capital. Because his father was a former Peacekeeper, he heard about all the injustice in the District every day at home. Because of his father, Kaleb does have a heightened sense of justice, and lives by these standards around the normal public, but keeps quiet when it comes to the Capital. When dealing with any Capital person or current Peacekeeper, Kaleb doesn’t show the same positive outlook as he does around normal people. He actually tends to keep his eyes down, giving the mandatory amount of respect necessary before moving on.

Kaleb’s job after school is a courier, running from the Lumber Mills to the Lumber fields, the latter where his mother works. He excels at running, and his quick reactions come from having to dodge branches as he sprints. This means Kaleb feels the most at ease while moving; it gives him time to think to himself while running. He is also skilled with hand-to-hand combat from his father and knife use from minor woodwork. If he is stressed, he tends to pace, as the movement in general lets him release any anxiety. Kaleb doesn’t get paid for his job, since he is under 18, but he works to help his mother, who since his Father’s death is the only source of income and food other than tessera. Kaleb also has to worry about feeding his younger sister, who is 10 and doesn’t have the ability to get tessera yet.

Though he handles physical challenge well enough, stress and panic are Kaleb’s main enemies. Because he takes many stressful situations as life-or-death, stress tends to overwhelm him. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since in the poorer section of District 7; problems mostly are life and death, like starvation or sickness. But this does mean milder stress is difficult for Kaleb to deal with.

Kaleb has lived with his mother and ten-year-old sister in District 7 for as long as he can remember. Kaleb’s father, Evan Aiken, used to be a Peacekeeper, before he was killed four years ago by a crazed wanderer just outside the district near the Lumber fields. Before that event, Kaleb had an uneventful life. He used to sit in school, basically ignoring the lessons in hopes that later he’d be able to wander out into the woods, where the idea of being alone, exploring, is exhilarating. After his father was killed, Kaleb began to help out his mother who worked in the lumber fields by running messages and reports back and forth.

Honor and justice has mattered a great deal to Kaleb because of his father’s ideals. His father began his job as a Peacekeeper to help the people of the District, but since then has grown tired of the corruption of the Capital that isn’t always apparent to the people. He would come home every night and talk quietly to Kaleb of the way people should treat others, and how the Capital isn’t fair with the prices and rations they give in comparison to the lumber they receive from the district. Dylan also learned hand to hand combat from his father, who said it would help him in the future to know. How Kaleb acts on these feelings of justice depends on who he’s dealing with. Kaleb tends to help out the poorer people of the district with daily tasks of getting water or food rather than the wealthier or the Peacekeepers.

Kaleb has very few friends outside of school or work, but one friend he has is Dylan Guile, a fellow courier that runs with him daily. They are practically brothers, helping each other out with food or money when the other is in need. The two haven’t known each other for more than two years, but the friendship has allowed both of them to trust others in the District and talk about their distrust of the Capital in whispers.
