HUGO DELGADO

~Male
~17 Years Old
~District 2

Appearance

Hugo has a mildly friendly appearance, with a smile that seems to show confidence and security. Though, he is aware that he lacks genuine assurance and valor, and that his smile is only a disguise, only a fake impression. He also has a very light, buoyant look to his face, which in fact, does reflect quite a bit of his true personality, even if his confident stance does not.

Many say Hugo’s hair is the color of chocolate: fairly dark, a bit lighter in some places, and murky in others. His hair is quite wavy, with curls extending all around the top of his head. The curly brown hair sometimes tends to annoy Hugo, for it definitely gets untidy quite easily. However, in many cases, it also tends to look fairly charming.

Hugo’s eyes are nothing special: or at least, they don’t catch you when you walk by, they don’t tend to charm people with any sort of sparkle, and the color is anything but distinctive. His eyes are hazel, a mixture of brown flooded with green, like a mixture of confidence and insecurity. When you look close enough into Hugo’s eyes, you can see that they are tired, almost drooping with exhaustion. Not physical exhaustion, but definitely mental exhaustion. Many people don’t tend to catch this tiny factor, though; they don’t see how lifeless Hugo’s eyes look, how robotic he seems. He’s believable enough as is.

Hugo’s eyebrows are very thick, and they tend to hide the lifelessness in his eyes. His eyebrows are supposedly a main contributor to the fact that he has a full face of confidence. They look thick enough to hide any secret, any doubt, or any piece of concern. They provide some shadow of character, and enough of it to hide all else.

Hugo’s face is otherwise proportional: his nose is straight, and although his lips are a little too small, they look no less than alright. Hugo’s face is quite round overall, and he has what many people call a “butt chin,” which he definitely does not enjoy. Though, Hugo’s muscular build makes up for it.

Hugo has large hands, large feet, and a fairly large structure. He is about 5’11’’, so he isn’t immensely tall. Though, he has a lot of muscle, from all of the training he's done. Immense strength characterizes Hugo’s appearance, strength which he knows, does not characterize his personality too.

Personality

Hugo always seems to be on the edge of things. He tries too hard to be accepted, which only tends to make things worse. He tries to be popular, and although he’s usually in the “popular group” he doesn’t always succeed in being a direct leader. Inside, Hugo is actually very confused. He does his best to show confidence, and convince others that he has internal strength. As much as he tries, however, he is never able to be a real leader.

Hugo is more of a follower—one who does whatever everyone else is doing, and just goes with the flow of things. He tries to come across as more driven than this, as if he is a leader. However, hard work only goes so far with Hugo, especially when it comes to stepping up. Hugo isn’t really one for change; he likes it when things stay the same. For him, change is hard to adapt to. In fact, in many cases, he is more of a literal thinker. He has to have things done a certain way, almost monotonously, in order to keep organized. He definitely needs organization, all the time, as much as possible. It’s hard for Hugo to change things once he’s already set them into order.

Despite the fact that Hugo always has to keep things organized, he is actually very thoughtful in heart. Though, in many cases, he fails to put his thoughts to actions, and stay loyal to his own feelings. He goes by everyone else’s thoughts, rather than his own. Maybe it’s lack of confidence that causes him to ignore his own instinctive feelings? Or maybe it’s the desperate want for companions, friends, and acceptance? Either way, Hugo doubts himself; he doubts his life, his actions, his thoughts. He doesn’t know right from wrong anymore, and is internally confused.

Mostly it’s the Hunger Games that have created this mental conflict in Hugo’s head. He wants to be accepted, and he wants to impress people by entering the games and by training as a Career; however, he questions the ethics of the games. He knows that killing others is wrong, but everyone else is doing it so…why not? Hugo tries to forget about the fact that volunteering to be in the games means killing, or being killed. Instead, he tries to fill his mind with the idea that because everyone else wants to be in the games, it’s okay for him to want to be in them too, even if he isn’t sure of his reasoning.

This shows definite weakness in Hugo; while he has so much physical strength, his emotional strength is miniscule. He doesn’t stand up for his beliefs or thoughts, and he doesn’t care to share them either. Instead, he follows everyone else, like a shadow of the rest of society. Fear, or rather, fear of change, holds him back. Though, in some ways this shows just how much he cares about others. He doesn't want to hurt his parents' or his friends' feelings, because he is merely too afraid to do so. He is too obedient, always following others' rules, never finding the chance to step up and live his own life.

Hugo can be ignorant in many instances. You could say he’s no more ignorant than the Careers that train like killing machines, but really, Hugo’s ignorance goes farther than that. The fact that he doesn’t act, doesn’t care, as clearly a chance as he has, portrays even more ignorance than the rest of the ruthless Careers.

History

Hugo was born with a brother, Estefan who was two years older. All of the time, Hugo was willed to be more like Estefan, who was constantly successful. Estefan trained for the Hunger Games nonstop, a brutally strong Career. So came Hugo's training. Both of their parents wanted to see their sons in the games; they parents wanted the best for their children: victory.

Hugo’s parents worked extremely hard when their two children were young. His father worked in the mines, and his mother spent her time not only doing housework, but making sure to put her children in all of the playgroups, all of the activities, and quite anything possible for them to get involved in. She wanted them to be social, and so they made friends quickly. Though it was obvious that Estefan was the popular one, the shining star of the family, from early on. It wasn’t that Hugo was incapable of being like his brother; he merely had to work harder to be as successful. So, he did. He tried his best to get in with the popular kids, the Careers, as he grew older; and through his childhood, he trained obediently. A young boy, desperate to be accepted, he followed his parents’ wishes, and didn’t give up.

He was only three when his parents decided he was old enough to begin training for the games: he started with running, flexibility and minor strength building. Then, his training grew gradually in intensity, as time passed. Although he had fun moments in his childhood, his parents had major control on his life as a kid; they trained him hard, hoping that he'd thank them when he was old enough to know how much this training meant. Even Hugo's friends were from Career-oriented families, all of them being children of his parents’ friends. As Hugo grew up, he knew it was time to start making his own decisions, but he was still attached to the life that his parents had created for him, the life that was to be his destiny.

When Hugo turned fourteen, one of his friends, a fellow Career, volunteered to be in the games. Hugo wasn’t sure whether he should have been jealous, supportive, or even pitying, for it was such an honor to be in the games, but at the same time, such a huge risk. He cheered his friend on, but of course, the boy ended up dead. Somehow, it was a huge surprise to Hugo; District Two always had such a large chance of winning the games, but, his friend had just been killed. After that moment, he wasn’t so sure about the games anymore. They scared him. Dying? He didn’t want to die; he didn’t want that life. But he was destined to it. He was raised as a devoted Career, and he couldn’t turn back.

For the next few years, Hugo tried his best. He was obedient, always following his parents’ wishes, while guilt and regret truly filled his soul. He found that the friends he had, were not really genuine. Many of them liked making trouble in their free time, or picking on younger kids—the non-Careers especially--but Hugo only followed along. He had bullies for friends, and he became one too. As much as he felt his insides being ripped apart, his values falling to pieces, he tried to keep himself from caring too much. He wanted to be accepted and he wanted to please his parents. If that’s what it took, so be it.

When Hugo’s brother, Estefan turned nineteen, his parents were devastated. Their oldest son, who had trained and prepared for the games for so many years, was at that point, too old for the games. He had lost his chance, leaving Hugo to take the spotlight. Hugo had expected the spotlight to be glorious; he had expected that when his brother was out of the running, he would finally have the chance to be accepted, to shine out. But no, of course, it only meant more pressure. Higher expectations. Hugo trained even harder, hoping to finally have the chance to volunteer as a tribute. He only had two reapings left. He found that his friends were under pressure too: they all wanted their chance to be in the games, to volunteer. It was turning into a tight competition just to get into the real one. Hugo knew he had to succeed; he had to make his parents happy, even if it meant giving up his own values. He wanted acceptance more than anything.

A very complex, well thought-out character! Absolutely loved the line that he is always "on the edge of things." Lovely!

ACCEPTED!
