These Fields are so boring[dancinginthedark][Fight

The adrenaline that is rushing through me from finally making a good hit is intoxicating. My bones feel like they're vibrating and the blood oozing out of my arm seems brighter, harsher against the pale contrast of my skin. My mace is hot against the pads of my fingers, like melting chocolate.

The dog attacks me again, slightly uneven because of it's leg. Despite being injured it still manages to leap fairly high, and his teeth are still just as sharp. This time however, I am one step ahead. I dive out of the way, my hoodie falling off my waist as I do so, and the mutts teeth snap through air.

It might seem odd that I laugh, or maybe it seems completely normal considering the events of today. I don't even know how long we've been fighting. All I know is that it has to end now. I get to my feet slowly, waiting for the mutt to take the bait. After a moment it growls and launches itself at me, teeth bared and covered in red. I swing my mace like a bat right into the mutt's ugly face.

I hear a crunch so graphic and horrible that I nearly throw up. I bite my tongue hard as I watch the hell-hound fall. It shrieks once in agony and then lies still. I hear my mace hit the ground, covered in the dog's fur and blood.

Something comes from my body. A sort of wheezing that shakes my whole body. It takes me a second to realize I am laughing. Hysterical cries wrench themselves from my throat and I fall to my knees, barely able to see anymore. Tears stream down my face at the same time, and after a moment I am not sure if the hysterics are from the laughter or the tears. My whole body shakes, and I clutch my arms across my chest to keep from falling apart all together. The pain is like when you break your toe. It hurts like no other, but there's nothing you can do for it. No way to fix a broken soul. Memories of Evan flash against my eyelids and I dig the heels of my hands into my eyes to try and force them away. I slide onto my side and hug my knees into my chest tightly.

I don't know how long I lie there in the fetal position. It's early evening when I finally start to move again. My bones are stiff and I can't feel my fingers, but my wounds have all stopped bleeding. I crawl over to where I left my backpack in the dust and pull it on. I sit cross-legged for another ten minutes before I can convince myself to stand. Somewhere in the distance I hear another canon.

"One step closer." I say to myself, wiping away the last of my tears.
