Lethe didn't look for her face in the sky. She didn't want to see her. She didn't want her last memory of her to be the girl fading away into darkness with one last haunting smile. No, so, Lethe closed her eyes that night, lying on the hard-packed earth. Her last thought before sleep came and carried her off was, I'm right here, mutts...other tributes...come get me...

"Animals have spirits too," Lethe's mother told her, as they walked through the sparse woods in the District, the rusted fence running alongside them, thicker woods on the other, forbiddon side. Lethe knew she wasn't supposed to say it aloud, so she kept the thought in her head: they lived in a prison. It was visually clear from the fence circling them, and the armed "Peacekeepers" that wandered past. And deep down it was clear, too. The Arena...the awful place they were forced to send their children was just more proof that they lived on their knees. Lethe knew others who felt the scabs and wanted to get up, but refrained from it...Lethe didn't mind as long as she had a horse beside her.

"You ever need help," the woman said to her daughter, "consult the animals. They'll listen. They'll warn you of danger. They'll guide you, trust me." Lethe smiled, sensing this was just another one of her mother's stories, meant to teach a lesson. And so, she teased.

"And I expect that mockingjay over there is supposed to teach me something, too, right?" she giggled, gesturing at the black and white bird on a snowy branch to her right. As if it had heard her, the mockingjay turned its beady black eyes on her and opened its mouth, emiting three loud shrieks, almost like a warning...

Right on cue, Lethe tripped over the log in front of her, which she hadn't seen, fell and landed flat on her face in the burning snow. She winced. Above her, her mother snickered as she reached down to pick up her freezing, wet and humilated daughter. "Didn't I tell you?" she said with the air of a wise woman. "The animals have spirits. They will help you. Try to listen next time."

Disgruntled, Lethe marched forward, her face bright red from both the cold and embarrassment. She refused to look back, but from that day forth, she listened to each and every mockingjay, never once forgetting that warning...

The day was hot and sticky when the young girl rose, her limbs stiff, skin sweaty. She took a moment to stretch before gathering her supplies and continuing on her way. It wasn't long before she found her surrounding area full of trees, none too dense, her feet crunching down on her leaves. Her stomach grumbled from hunger and her tongue was parched and hot, growing drier the more she tried to wet it.

Stopping short in a small clearing, Lethe knew she needed some water. She had some filled water jugs, she just needed to purify them. Not wanting to waste her tablets just yet, Lethe, uncharacteristically, took a risk. She collected thick fallen branches and leaves, piling them together, matches in her other hand.

Up until now, she'd kept her mind at bay. She hadn't allowed wandering. She was just a tribute on a mission to get from point A to point B. No time for thinking. However, building up the fire was slow business and Anya filled her brain. The horrible thing was she wondered now...was Anya ugly? Did she have crooked teeth, watery eyes and pimples? No, she was beautiful, wasn't she? Hadn't Lethe thought her beautiful? Lethe didn't know and the answer came no closer even as she dug around her mind for it and that was the sad thing.

The fire spewed smoke into the air, but the tired, hot and dirty girl didn't care. She had a crossbow, eleven knives and a sword...let someone try to kill her. She'd be ready...she'd be ready...Though not entirely sure where this new dangerous confidence had come from, Lethe found herself enjoying it. She knew if others came it would be bad, but right now she didn't care, perfectly content as she chewed on the edible plants around her. Her shrunken stomach eargerly gobbled the plants up. The girl made sure she had another day's helping of plants and some medicinal herbs in her bag before closing it.

Aches swept up and down her body, but her wounds had all healed, so she could hardly complain when she imagined the other tributes were hopelessly injured...and horribly enough, she hoped for just that. As she waited for the fire to heat up, Lethe watched a small rabbit hop through the clearing. She stealthily made small pet noises, attracting it towards her. The rabbit slowly and cautiously approached her, but finally let Lethe pet it. She'd always had a thing with animals, ever since her mother had taught her about them.

"Animals have spirits too."

For one fleeting moment, Lethe wondered if this rabbit might be able to help her. Help her figure out how to actually recognize others. All she wanted right now was to remember what her mother's face looked like, what color her eyes were, how long her hair was, if she was fat or thin...just something! And so, Lethe cleared her throat and softly spoke, stroking the rabbit's fur soothingly, "Um, little rabbit..." Feeling absolutely crazy, she tore on, sensing all cameras on her, "it's me, Lethe-"

Suddenly, the bushes to her immediate left began rustling. In fear, the wide-eyed rabbit took off with Lethe's comfort. There was something heading right towards her! The girl leapt to her feet, heart racing, sweaty hand clasped around her blood-stained knife.

A girl and a boy appeared. For a moment, they contemplated each other then Lethe cried out, "Who are you?"

The girl spoke first. Her eyes didn't find Lethe when she spoke, however, they focused on something else and were milky-white..."Did you say Lethe?"

The question caught Lethe off-guard, but she answered anyway, "That's my name..."

The response surprised her too. "Lethe! You're okay!"

Lethe paused, bemused. Then, she saw the way the girl didn't seem to find her eyes or even her...she seemed like she couldn't see at all...she was blind...just like-"Saskia?" Lethe gaped and saw Saskia give tell-tale nod at the sound of her name. And Lethe was running to her, gratefully, enveloping her in a hug, not caring if Saskia accepted the hug or pushed her away. "Saskia! Oh my gosh! Saskia! I'm so glad you found me! Anya! Anya, she's-" Lethe faltered, pulling away. She wanted to look down so Saskia wouldn't see her tears, but then she remembered. Glancing at the boy with Saskia, Lethe realized she hardly cared anymore. He hadn't know Anya. She had. "Anya's dead...a big mutt...it was quick, she died painlessly, I think..." Lethe swallowed hard. "I'm so happy to see you though! Here, I have some water. Can I, um, borrow your cooking pot to boil the water?"

Soon, Lethe had boiled a water jug and a half for the three of them, Saskia, Lethe and the boy, Saskia's new ally, named Razor. Lethe took her helping from the pot, not caring that the water was warm as it hit her throat. It just felt so good. Grinning, passed it to Saskia and Razor to drink.

Grateful energy had filled her. She was no longer alone! She was safe now with Saskia and Razor, who looked a bit worse off then Lethe, but at least now they were all together, and for that, Lethe was happy. Remembering a conversation with Anya about handing the crossbow off to Saskia, Lethe did so, also offering her hunting knife if she needed it, seeing as Lethe had ten other knives. And for the boy, Lethe shoved the sword at him.

"Take it," she muttered, not looking him in the eye. "It was her's..." Anya's...no words could describe the sorrowful undertone Lethe felt underneath her glee. It was deep and painful, like a knife in her gut, twisting and twisting. By this time, Anya's cold body was heade back to her district, never to smile, dance or feel sunlight again...

Lethe tried to push those awful thoughts far from her mind, hiding them underneath the forest floor and never looking back. She turned her attention to Saskia and Razor. "So," she asked, "how have you guys been? Okay?"

"She's got too many troubles on her mind, her father told her to leave for this was too much trauma."

The night had passed far too swiftly for Razor's taste. He squinted as the sun rose. Was it just him, or was the temperature rising with each passing day? He hoped not. If that was the case, he needed to find water; sooner rather than later. Good clean water too. It would be s terrible thing for a career to meet their end via dirty water. That line of thinking reminded him of one of the tributes from last year, a girl named Zuka. Though she was from a lower district, Razor had respected her killing prowess n the arena. She might have gone farther if not for that poisonous drink. When the anthem had played, he had idly read off the deceased to his companion.

Six more tributes dead by the end of day two. The girl from district four who had put sticky notes on everything. her face was followed by that of the cowboy from district five. Anya something or other was next. The tribute who had had a child right after the reaping. Both district ten tributes had died as well; the quiet girl and Colan, the blonde boy who had attempted to help do away with jaimie on the first day. Dustin Summerfield's face was last, meaning that running away hadn't helped, and, as well, there would not be a district twelve victor this year.

"Her body will remain here with me. I guess you could say i'm in love with a corpse, but that's just insane."

Sleep had given Razor time to think, to rest his weary mind. He began to examine the actions of the previous two days. It was a fling right? His relationship with the girl? They both knew that one of them would die eventually, and judging by how fast tributes were dying, that time would come soon. Not counting himself and Saskia, ten other tributes remained.

The one he had called Stumpy, and her bloodthirsty teammates for certain. He reasoned that the quartet they had encountered the previous day must contain both District three tributes. The tall boy was from District four. Lethe Turner, A member of Saskia's missing alliance was out there somewhere. That left the male from district six, the little girl that had stabbed him during the bloodbath; as well as her district partner, and Hawthorne from District nine. Hopefully, the four from yesterday would finish each other off. He did not relish the prospect of facing them again.

"I woke last night to the screaming of a child, but it wasn't mine. I doubt this fairy tale will put me back to sleep, but what the hell."

Razor was feeling kind of down to say the least. Twelve tributes dead and he hadn't slain a single one. His father had been highly disappointed about that and had refused to stop pestering him throughout the night. The voice of his father had also been upset about the girl. True, she was cute. And a good kisser to boot. But the voice warned him not to carry this charade too far. He needed to ditch her, the voice had admonished.

He glanced at her as he guided her across the landscape. It was truly going to suck when he killed her. At least the threat of a second Arbor Halt had kept the others at bay. It was good for both of them. Though he doubted she knew it, Saskia was protecting him as much as he was protecting her. Having fled from that career alliance, Razor was glad he had made the decision to double back to the same area. Those four annoyances wouldn't expect that. And they hadn't. The Light Jungle appeared to be deserted.

"So they say she was bearing a child when she was put to death,but now my imagination is going too far."

Or mostly deserted anyway. As the unlikely pair picked their way through the brush, he thought he heard someone talking. "Little rabbit... It's me Lethe..." The voice was decidedly female, and the words were directed towards an animal. Well, the arena had a way of affecting people like that. You might be normal going into the arena, but going out...

Gripping his machete tightly, he blundered out of the bush to see a pale, blonde-haired girl. They stared at each other for a moment, neither wanting to make the first move. "Who are you?" she cried out. Saskia seemed to recognize the voice as Lethe.
As it turned out, it was Lethe. The two enjoyed a reunion, while Razor stood uncomfortably off to the side. Lethe relayed details of Anya's demise. Death by mutt. Not the best of ways to go out.

"Ill paint my walls, you'll see me there. I've seen a masterpiece covered in blood."

Lethe was a nice enough girl, even if her earrings were a tad distracting. Beets or radishes or something. However, when Razor saw what was in her pack, he couldn't help but grin. Passing her his cooking pot, he watched as she built a fire and proceeded to boil a quantity of water. A few more jugs sat idly in her bag. Choosing to ally himself with Saskia was turning out to be a lucrative venture indeed. He drank deeply when the pot was passed to him, before putting the item back in his bag.

The water might have been a bit warm for his comfort, but it was refreshing. A look of surprise crossed his features when Lethe handed him a long-sword. "Take it. It was hers." She said sadly. It was clear that she did not want the weapon. He thanked her and put his machete in his bag, before hefting the new blade experimentally. Now this was a weapon he could do damage with.
"So how have you guys been? Okay?" "Oh you know, killing mutts with cooking pots, insulting career packs, making out. The usual." He said loftily.

"The four horsemen of the apocalypse are coming, and they are not bringing flowers. Keep me around and you'll find we have something in common."

Something moved in the bush. Was that rabbit lethe had talked to back? Razor turned to say something smarmy, when a duo of evil looking wolf-dog mutts emerged from the bushes. Casting a sidelong look at Lethe, he muttered exasperated. "You said Anya was killed by a big mutt? These look pretty big. And now there's two of them. It must have tracked you. Splendid." Stalking around warily to face this new threat to his continued existence, he thought about what he knew about canines.

They liked chewing on bones. All right, that fact didn't help. They traveled in packs. Obvious. When attacking a herd they go after the very old, the very young and the infirm. Ah. Razor glanced at Saskia. Had she been a blind field animal, she would have been killed at an early age. As a blind human, her disability still made her easy prey. Well, that could be a problem solver. It the mutts killed her, he wouldn't have to do the deed himself. He should probably test out this new weapon of his though. He swung his new weapon around in an arc toward a mutt.

Sweeping the sword in an arc seemed to do the trick. He slashed the back of the mutt's head. Causing a wound. Too bad that it hadn't been a harder hit. The blade might have severed it's head.
Now to see what the mutts would do.

The second night in the Arena seemed to drag on with no end. Razor had described the dead tributes in the sky. Anya was one of them. My heart had jumped in my throat and I quickly slammed a hand over my mouth to keep from making any noise. I wanted to cry- Anya was killed and what had I been doing? Kissing and running from Careers. I felt pitiful, but Razor didn't seem to notice and kept filling me in on the children in the sky.

The next morning brought a headache from holding back the tears that I should have let go. I followed Razor through the jungle, switching between holding on to his satchel and his hand. He was unnervingly quiet and that made me wonder what was going on in that brainwashed head of his. No matter what I do, he's still a Career. He was brought up to think a certain way and chances are he'll die that way. I tried to walk around the problem in my mind but eventually had to face it full on- does Razor plan on killing me? I mean, one of us will have to go eventually, but does he already have a head start on this battle? The very thought of it made my stomach flip over.

In an attempt to calm myself, I went over the last few days. What has Razor killed? Nothing. What have I killed? A mutt with nothing but a single blow from a cooking pot. What does Razor have? A Career reputation. What do I have? The thought in the back of every single person's head that I'll turn out to be another Arbor Halt.

I gave Razor's hand a little squeeze and couldn't help but grin a little. My Archer Fields. I keep a mental note that in the end, Arbor Halt was the one to end his ally's life.

"Little rabbit... It's me Lethe..." my ears perked up instantly and I let go of Razor's hand, stepping forward without any fear of what the consequences might be.

It was Lethe! She was alive! I felt her arms encircle me in a hug and I couldn't help myself from hugging back. In the moment of a joyful reunion, Lethe said the one word that would make me fall back into the deep thoughts I had just emerged from.

"Anya."

Biting my lip, I refused to let it get to me.

Anya's dead...a big mutt...it was quick, she died painlessly, I think..."

The words were heavy in the air until Lethe started off about having water and then they were lifted away as easily as a child on Reaping day.

Feeling the pot's handle in my hand, I drank from it, letting the water soothe my throat- no matter how hot the liquid might be. Was there anything this cooking pot couldn't do? I munched on another helping of plants which helped keep my hunger at bay. Then came the dividing of Lethe's extra weapons.

Somehow, don't ask, I ended up with a crossbow. Do they think they're funny? I accepted the gift anyway, but really? What am I supposed to do with the cross bow? I stood up, walked around with it- that thing was so heavy! I wasn't even sure how to work it, much less aim it at something. Throwing shoes is completely different from this contraption. Frustrated, I slipped a bolt into the bow and was about to ask the other's if there was a tree near by I could practice with when a bush rustling made me spin around and awkwardly hold the bow, trying to figure out how to use it. The rustling turned into growling and my stomach dropped.

"You said Anya was killed by a big mutt? These look pretty big. And now there's two of them. It must have tracked you. Splendid."

Two of whatever killed Anya? Oh god, I wish I had that cooking pot. In fact, I moved to get a weapon I was more skilled with, perhaps Lethe's hunting knife, but I grabbed the wrong thing on the bow and it fired, sending my unprepared body falling back with the recoil.

Dropping the bow, I pick up one of the many bolts in the grass, scrambling to arm myself again. Putting my finger to the tip of the bolt, I found it rather sharp and decide that it would better to arm myself with a pointy stick than whatever that is supposed to do. Stuffing the rest of the bolts into my belt, I was crouched down and trying to pinpoint where the growling was coming from.

"Where is it?!" I shouted, trying to get some communication between myself and my allies. They gave me a crossbow- the least they could do in return was tell me where the bloodthirsty mutts were.

Gytrash and Faria

The male Hellhound, Gytrash, was fierce and unafraid. He had joined up with his mate Faria in her hunt for tributes, aka their meals. Faria had been fortunate enough to catch some prey the previous day when she ended the life of a lame girl with a single bite. Faria then proceeded to devour the girl’s insides until hovercrafts took her corpse away. Gytrash hadn’t been so lucky, he had been too far away in the arena to join his mate in the feasting. Today they hunted together, double the danger to any tributes they came across. The female Hellhound was bitter that one of the girls she had hunted had gotten away without a single wound. It was her familiar scent that Faria followed now. Only there were two other human scents with her now. Three against two. No trouble for the Hellhounds, with razor like teeth and claws adorning their massive canine bodies. Tributes were no match for this hellish pair.

As they drew closer and closer to their prey Gytrash and Faria began to salivate. So close, their meal was so close they could taste it already. The warm blood, the squish insides… All of it was so very delicious. Two pairs of red eyes caught sight of two girls and a boy. But it appeared they had been seen and lost the element of surprise. The boy of the group lunged at Gytrash with a shiny long weapon, it connected with the back of the mutt’s head. He growled in pain but quickly shook it off. The human would pay dearly. That was when an arrow grazed his front right let leaving a shallow cut. It seemed the humans were ganging up on the bigger of the two mutts. Faria leapt to her mate’s side baring her teeth at the tributes. Her eyes settled on the girl she’d seen before, so frail. How ever had she gotten away? Gytrash would take on the boy, that was a given, who would she choose? The one that seemed impaired, or the fragile one she’d let get away? Her choice was made in a split second, the two mutts lunged at their prey.

Lethe’s blood turned to ice. Mutts? She wheeled around and, to her horror, spotted them. Two large mutts, exactly like the one that had killed Anya. Suddenly, Lethe felt light-headed and queasy. Hadn’t they just been talking? Hadn’t they just been happily eating and drinking, finally re-united? But now, they were in huge trouble. That brief moment of joy wasn’t to be. The watchers weren’t happy, no, they didn’t want glee. They wanted blood and carnage. Lethe could practically see them excitedly at the edge of their seats.

The boy known as Razor was a quick thinker. He lunged forward, Anya’s-no, his sword sweeping through the air and meeting the back of the mutt’s head. Blood spurted from its shallow wound. Lethe knew she should attack, but she was suddenly frozen to the spot in fear. Oh gosh, it had followed her. How could she be so stupid? She should’ve been more careful! They were all in danger and it was entirely her fault!

Terror and guilt washed over her body, paralyzing her. Knowledge that things can change in an instant sunk further into her. Anya was dead before Lethe could even blink. These mutts had appeared before the three could even smile at each other. In a second, things can be totally different. What would happen this time? Who would be the next to fall dead?

Saskia was slightly slower than Razor, but swifter than Lethe. She scrambled for the bow and let an arrow lose, hitting the same mutt as Razor. But, then, Lethe saw her falter. "Where is it?!" she cried, struggling to re-load and succeeding. Before she knew it, Lethe was lunging forward to Saskia, to her ally, her friend.

“There,” Lethe told her, gently gripping Saskia’s arm, and pointing it in the direction of the mutt she’d hit. “Right there, get it, Saskia, get it!”

Despite her words to Saskia, Lethe herself remained rooted to the spot, eyes wider than ever. All that was running through her head was the crunch of the mutt’s teeth in Anya’s skull, the girl’s faceless, plain body falling to the ground with a thud and the small trickle of blood on the ground. Crunch, thud…and her anguished shriek. It was re-playing over and over and over and-

Lethe shrieked in pain as a mutt sprang forward, its sharp, lethal teeth digging into her hip. It was only a shallow wound, dribbling only some blood, but was painful, no less. Lethe spun around, but stopped short. The patch of darker fur in the form of a circle on the mutt’s head was all too familiar…

It was a funny thing to Lethe that she could easily recognize animals, but never people. Animals were never a problem to her. In fact, they were her refuge. When she was drowning in that pool of white, she’d find safety in her horses. She knew each one of their names, their markings, everything. She was great at recognizing animals. And when she could recognize something, she’d be happy. But, now…recognizing this mutt was not a happy affair. This mutt had killed Anya.

Lethe screamed again, but it was full of fury, not a frightened scream. No, she was livid. She raised her knife, but stumbled backward on accident, slashing at the other mutt, the one that the others had attacked.

If Razor had thought animals were capable of emotion, he would have sworn that the smaller of the two mutts had glared at him after he had struck the larger of the pair. But these mutts couldn't be that smart could they? He moved in a circular motion, aware that a still target was easier to strike. Lethe and Saskia fanned out to either side of him, the latter clutching a crossbow. Why Lethe had given a weapon that required aim and precision to their blind teammate , he could not fathom. That being said, it came as a surprise when she managed to graze the beasts paw with a bolt. A lucky shot? Or a hidden skill? a more dangerous opponent could be lurking just beneath the surface. "Where are they?" She cried out. "To the left , he replied with a chuckle. "You hit one. Are you sure you're blind?" Lethe cried out and directed Saskia to a mutt, before sinking her knife into the big wolf things chest. It was a really good hit.

Meanwhile, the mutts snapped and slavered. It was clear that they wanted a meal. Well. Razor Creel was not about to let himself be put on the menu. The smaller mutt leaped at Lethe and grazed her hip, sinking it's teeth into the pale tribute. The coppery smell of blood was in the air. The larger mutt bared its teeth and lunged for Razor. Bringing the blade up, the mutts snout bounced harmlessly off the metal, leading him to wonder if the mutt experienced the same sensation he did whenever he bit down on a utensil. The only thing to hit Razor was an aura of foul smelling breath and a gob of spittle. Wiping it off of his face in digust, Razor brought the blade down on the mutt again. "Bad Dog."

The sword moved through the mutts face like butter, flaying one of the cheeks open to display jagged looking teeth. Between him and Lethe, this mutt was getting ripped apart. "Good Job you two, Keep it up!"

Where's there? God! Sometimes people just don't get it, do they? Lethe's arm pushed me lightly to the side right before a mutt lunges at us. I felt its hide against my skin, and its weight shake the ground. Stumbling away from it, I heard Lethe pull out her knife and land a firm blow on the mutt I didn't have to see to believe.

"To the left" I dive in the suggested direction, brandishing one of the bolts from my belt. "You hit one. Are you sure you're blind?"

Maybe I should have played with that crossbow a little longer. I let a grin cross my face before an odd sound takes it away. Metal on something... a blade on bone? No, teeth- correction, make it fangs. Along with the rare noise, comes the squish of blade after blade entering mutt flesh. I feel the warm spray land on my face and for once I'm glad I've lost my sense of smell. Part of the stream landed on my lips and I could taste the iron flavor. Wiping my face with the back of my hand to free myself from the torture of having tasted mutt blood, or worse ally blood, I stopped and took in my surroundings that kept moving around every time I was led in a certain direction.

It was like a symphony. The smooth slash of a sword through the air, the whelp of the injured party and the haunting music of flesh tearing and blood gurgling up to fill the void and then some. Maybe the Capitol should adopt this as its anthem, it would make more sense.

"Good Job you two, Keep it up!"

Time for my solo. Lunging forward, I kept my bolt raised, sticking my other hand out to feel for my target. This mutt has got to die some time soon, I can hear it in its ragged breath and my boots have found the grass below has become slick with something's blood.

Gytrash and Faria

Gytrash was the mutt they targeted, he reeled back in pain. Growling he knew he would not last much longer. These humans were going to kill him, but the least he could do is try to make his final attack count so that Faria would have the best chance of survival. His wounded body wasn't as fast as it once once, but still plenty quick to attack the humans one last time. He shot a sad look at his mate before baring his teeth at the male human. This was it, one last shot.

Seeing her mate so near death drove Faria even more savage, even if she died here she would take these tributes with her. What they had done to Gytrash was unforgivable. It was easy to see he would not survive this fight, but she just might. They were leaving her alone for one reason or another, targeting her mate instead. Well she'd given them something to think about. Mouth agape she attacked again. This time she'd team up with Gytrash in his last attack.

Even in the horrifying fray of battle, Lethe’s insides swelled like a balloon. They could do this. They were all together, they could take these mutts down. She could hear Saskia and Razor shouting to one another, but now her focus was back on the mutt they were attacking. It was the weakest right now, blood pouring from its multiple wounds landed by Razor and Saskia. Eyes magnetically attracted to that awful mutt that had murdered Anya, Lethe felt a surge of hatred. That was the terrible mutt that had ended a young girl’s life. Once more, it replayed in Lethe’s head…

Crunch…thud…scream…There was only a little blood, only a little, but the wound was enough…and Anya was dead.

Lethe had seen a girl die before Anya. A different girl, but she hadn’t had the same impact of Anya. Anya had stuck by her, she’d protected her, called her her friend. The wound in Lethe’s heart was much deeper. And now, she wasn’t sure how to fill it back up-

A scream escaped her as that murdering mutt leapt forward, sinking its teeth into Razor. Oh, gosh, please not again, she prayed, the hairs on the back of her neck raising up. But, to her relief, Razor had only been injured…but severely. Both of the mutts had turned on him.

Lethe’s arms raised to the mutt that had killed Anya, the knife clasped firmly in her hand. All she wanted to do was tear it apart, murder it, hear its anguished howl. “You took Anya away from me,” she whispered to it, although she knew no one could hear her. This mutt had caused new scars on her face. This mutt had caused much more than it had realized. She wanted revenge and she would do that by-

She stopped short, her knife still high, suddenly realizing. This mutt had taken Anya from her…perhaps it wasn’t the best plan to attack the mutt that was perfectly fine…why not its friend? Its injured, weak friend. Yes! Give it a taste of what she was feeling. Lethe swung around to face the mutt that they’d been attacking, eyeing the blood dripping from its body. She waited for the perfect time, lying low like an animal, and then…she pounced.

There it was again. Was he going crazy or did those mutts exchange another look? He was starting to think that the animals in front of him were in fact capable of some form of communication."Son. stop getting distracted by stupid thoughts and pay attention. It's your your own good." Razor brushed the thought aside carelessly. However, the voice was right. He should be paying more attention to what was going on, and so, he was completely unprepared when both of the mutts charged him before he could defend himself. Jagged teeth sank into his left forearm and his leg causing him to cry out in pain.

She told me I'd someday die, but what the hell does she know?

This was yet another attack that hit his left arm in the past few days. What did the arena have against it? Blood poured from both of the wounds, as well as staining the muzzles of both the mutts. He could almost feel his father glaring at him, wherever he was. Stupid dogs. Lethe pounced at more injured of the two mutts, only for her knife to clack off of the claws. That wasn't good. It was time to step his game. Hearing Lethe shout for him and Saskia to finish off the mutt, he gripped the blade tightly and lashed out again. "Happy to oblige."

The music came to an abrupt stop. Harmonies screeched to a halt as blades hit claws instead of flesh. Notes were missed as metal whizzed through the air but didn't hit their mark. Shouts of encouragement were swallowed by the never ending growls and snarls of the hungry beasts. Fear gripped my body when I heard paws against the ground, barreling past me and latching onto someone. Cries of pain hit the air and I rushed over to my wounded ally. I put a comforting hand on his shoulder and found it covered in blood like the rest of his arm.

"Saskia, kill this thing!" he said.

"I will," I told Razor sincerely, ready to take on these mutts who killed Anya and wounded my allies. Without thinking about it, I grabbed Razor's face with my free hand and set my lips on his. A good luck kiss for the both of us.

Pushing myself in front of Razor, I gripped my bolt tightly, afraid it might slip out of my sweaty palm. Rushing forward toward the snapping of enormous jaws, I lunged swiping my weapon out- hoping to end this song and the gruesome dance that went along with it.

The bolt buried itself in the mutt's hide and I pulled the bolt back out, bringing with it a fresh spray of blood that sprinkled on me like rain.

Gytrash knew he was finished the second one of the two girls stabbed her weapon into his leg. The blood loss made him dizzy as his life slipped away. His red eyes looked at Faria while he let out a feeble whimper. Collapsing to the ground the male mutt was dead, body riddled with wounds from the tributes. He was a victim of the Games just like the tributes who would die here.

The sight of her mate's death drove Faria into over drive. Three again her one, she wouldn't survive this. What was the point without Gytrash anyway? All she could do now is try to get revenge for her fallen companion. But who to attack? It was such a hard question. The boy was closest to death, the impaired girl delivered the death blow to her mate, and the last one was the one that got away from her... The two girls seemed to be caused pain when the boy was hurt, and he was already the weakest.... It was a three for one deal. The mutt growled furiously, showing her teeth to the tributes before leaping to attack.

This time, it was the mutt who fell dead, struck down by Saskia. Lethe neither gasped nor closed her eyes when the mutilated mutt collapsed. In fact, she found that a smile had been pulled across her face. They’d done it! All together! The mutt was dead, all for Anya. They’d gotten their revenge for Anya. Lethe’s grin widened as she turned to Saskia, shouting out, “You did it! You killed it! Great job!”

Her glee was short-lived, for a low growl suddenly pierced her ears. Swinging around, Lethe raised her knife only to see the remaining mutt leap forward, sinking its teeth into Razor once more. Another deep wound to him. Although she hadn’t been hurt this time, she screamed, resenting the awful sound of teeth into flesh. They needed to get out of there now.

“Saskia, Razor! Let’s go! Grab your stuff! Now!” The authority in her voice surprised even her, but right now, the only thing that seemed to matter was getting out of there. Leaping over the dead mutt’s body, Lethe stumbled to her stuff, dropping to her knees to sweep her things into her satchel. Horror was slowly building up again inside of her as she glanced around to find the ground was not only splattered with the mutt’s blood, but Razor’s as well. Lethe straightened up and glanced at the injured boy. Her heart sank considerably. He needed medical attention now. He was losing far too much blood.

Her eyes strayed to the various plants on the ground. She knew she only had a split-second to get to one of them that’ll help and bade the two to run before the remaining mutt attacked again. She sprinted forward, leaning down to grip a plant that looked familiar. “It’ll soothe pain in open wounds, and help clot the blood,” the instructor had said, “but be careful to grab the right one. Several look similar.” Praying she was right, Lethe threw the leaves into her mouth and began to chew. Instantly, sweetness met her tongue, giving her a head rush, but she knew she’d done right. “Here, Razor,” she gagged, taking the gooey mess out of her mouth. “Put this on your wounds, it’ll help!”

Lethe swallowed and placed it in his hand. “Now, let’s go!” she cried, eyeing the mutt. “Follow me, please!” Lethe took Saskia’s arm again and pointed it in the right direction. “C’mon, this way.” And she took off running, refusing to look back, some satisfaction in knowing she’d done something about Anya’s death…with the help of her new friends, that is.

Shifting his weight from leg to leg as his skin grew sticky with drying blood, Razor was confused when Saskia proceeded to plant a kiss on his lips. What was the purpose of that particular gesture? Did she really have feelings for him? He watched in amazement as she jammed the bolt deep into the mutt, crimson liquid spurting out of the wound like a macabre fountain. At last, the vicious beast keeled over dead. Yet razor felt no relief, It felt like the mutts had gone after him on purpose. That he had been targeted. Had he actually managed to piss off the mutts? Were they that smart? He supposed that they might consider him the bigger threat; compared to the two girls.

"This time you can't save yourself."

The remaining animal lunged at him again, sinking it's teeth into the flesh of his leg. The pain was barely felt, as his attention was on the blind girl. Did she actually care for him? A pang of guilt struck his chest. It was becoming increasingly difficult for him to wrap his head around the idea of killing her. Obviously, it was a terrible idea to from relationships in this hellhole.

Lethe smiled down at the dead mutt. Was she happy? He watched as she chewed on a plant, dimly aware that she was speaking to him. She spit a gooey mess of plants out into her hand and gave it to him. Recognizing it from the training station, he smeared it onto some of his wounds while keeping a careful eye on the living mutt. He was astonished that this girl would take the time to help him, when if their roles had been reversed he probably would have delivered a killing blow.

Blood oozed from most of his limbs, and he felt weak for the first time in the arena. He was angry as well. He needed to win. If he won, the voice would go away. If he won, perhaps his father would finally be proud of him. Perhaps he would finally love him. As he watched the mutt, thoughts about the remaining tributes crossed his mind. The career pack he had seen the other day had seemed mentally unbalanced. None of them deserved to be victor. The other tributes were of no consequence. Save for Saskia.

He glanced at the two girls. He owed them both. Let it be known that Razor Creel was a man of his word. He would keep these girls alive until they and he were all that was left. Then, and only then would he do away with them. Lethe was worth it. And Saskia... Well. He'd cross that bridge when he came to it. For now, he planned to enjoy whatever kind of relationship they had. Lethe turned and fled, telling the others to run as well. Glaring at the mutt, Razor turned and fled, eager to find a safe place to heal up. Looking back once, he muttered under his breath."I have not come this far to die now."

I couldn't help but smile- I had killed another mutt after all. Another snarl caught my attention- there was still another mutt after them! I heard teeth against flesh again-

“Saskia, Razor! Let’s go! Grab your stuff! Now!” must be Lethe shouting- so Razor was hit again? Oh god. I turned and scrambled through the blood slicked grass, trying to find that crossbow. I might not be able to work it, but it would be a waste to leave it around for other tributes to find. My hand hit the object and I grabbed it, placing it under my arm for safe keeping.

“Follow me, please!" Lethe, I assumed, grabbed my arm and started pulling me to the side. “C’mon, this way.”

I thought about a last minute shot at the remaining mutt but decided against it, choosing instead to follow Lethe and Razor leaping through the underbrush and leaving the dead mutt and it's snarling friend behind me.
