Items, both his and Soyala's, overflowed in his arms as Seah went to set them down in a pile to search through them, see what he needed and what he couldn't find a use for. At least twenty-five items lay in the stack, everything from full water jugs (which he didn't hesitate to use; he gulped down one within seconds) to medical supplies. In the end, he handed most of the items to Aenor, including a dead rabbit - which he quickly handed away - that caused him to tense up considerably. With some of his cuts from the previous day stinging with pain still, he got to work with a needle and thread and the last of the bandages that weren't in the med kit. The work was easier than it was in the past, having repeated the process far too many times. Strange plants sat in the pile of items, and he looked to Aenor quizzically before using them to heal as well.

A cannon fired for the dead girl at his feet, but only a few seconds later another fired off in the distance.

Fear struck him first, with the question that instinctively loomed over his head: Who was near? Who were they up against?

Second instinct - what his parents had always forced him to feel and ponder - was the urge to flee, to attack anything and anyone near him. Kill.

Kill, kill, kill, wasn't that right? You can't win if you can't kill, his dad liked to say.

But the third, simple question zipped through his mind, and it seemed the most important of all, despite his years of training. In spite of everything his parents had taught him about the Games, Seah felt a pang of sympathy for the second cannon.

Who else had just been murdered?

Picking up the useful items and stuffing them into the girl's backpack, Seah did not waste any time as he ran where the signal of death had come.
