[7D7A6F] [6D6165] [AD9EA3]I'm not sure how long I've been running. My legs just pound against the ground, launching me closer and closer to god knows where. Trees. That's all I can see as my surroundings begin to blur and become a mixture of bright colours. My breath is very nearly exploding out of my mouth, my lungs pressing tightly against my chest. Clutching the crossbow tightly against my body and holding the package of bolts in my hand, I throw myself right into the foliage, not wishing to stop. I'm probably passing many animals that I could easily catch and cook but I don't really care much. All that I'm worrying about is what's ahead of me and what may be behind me. Surging forward through the trees is all that I'm focusing on. Get as far away from that bloodbath as possible.
My body aches. A few bruises will be showing up on my skin but the worst part certainly has to be the broken wrist. It feels broken, in the very least. A purple dusting across the skin seems to have arrived, making my hand look slightly darker too. I need to wrap that up or something. It's only going to get worse unless I support it. Making a mental note of that, I bring my attention back to the forest and the path that I'm taking. A leaf brushes against my face. A stick hits my leg. There's a noise to my right and it forces me to come to a complete halt and to position my crossbow on my broken arm so I can get ready to shoot if need be. But nobody's there. Absolutely nobody is around me. This is how the Hunger Games will probably be.
I need to find Taylor. That's my main priority. Maybe she was able to grab more than I could. And maybe she's already dead. There's no way of knowing until the faces appear in the sky. I take the time now to catch my breath though, leaning against a tree and looking around me. There's a small clearing and the trees are spread fairly far apart. A ray of sunshine pokes through the canopy, lighting up some plants that are growing out of the ground. One of them stands out in my memory as an edible plant that we studied at the station. I smile as I carefully make my way closer, prepared to fight back if I need to. Dropping to my knees, I carefully remove the plants and place them gently on the ground. I brush the dirt off of one before gingerly placing it in my mouth. It tastes fairly bland compared to the things I have been eating, but it's food nonetheless.
I tuck the other bundle of plants into the case with my bolts, trying to be careful to not use my right hand at all. It is beginning to feel numb, which is a good thing I suppose. Less pain to be feeling. While I'm stopped, I decide to pull off my shirt, being careful around the gash. I tear off the sleeves and make them into one long strand. As gently as I can, I wrap it around my bicep. It covers most of the cut and probably won't help very much but at least it covers it from dirt getting in. I need a real bandage to do this properly but clearly that's not really at my disposal at this point. The rest of the shirt is used to wrap up my hand and to keep it secured. It's a terrible mock cast but hopefully it'll do its job. Once I'm done, I continue running forward.
I only stop again when I come across more plants. These aren't just edible. I remember the picture and the page that was covered with all the medicinal uses. It takes me no time at all to rip them out of the ground and to use them as I was told to. I chew the plant up before putting it against my gash, letting out a sigh as it begins to relieve the pain. Another bundle is pulled out of the ground and it joins the edible ones in the case. So far I'm doing alright. Hopefully. Before setting out again, I perform the few things that I was instructed to do at the first aid station. This will help. Hopefully. Who knows if what they told me was true. I may have just rubbed poison into my wounds. No. I'm doubting myself now. Just stick with what you know. That's what I have to do.
And apparently that's running into trees. As soon as I hop off the ground, the tree before me stops me in my tracks. Taking a few steps back, I lean over to catch my breath. And that's when there's a heavy, abrupt smack on the back of my head. It drags me to the ground and forces me to throw my hands up to feel it, no longer caring about my broken wrist. "Oh fuck." I try to say coherently, but it only comes out slurred. The palm trees appear to be swaying over me, much more than before. Make sure nobody's coming. That's my first thought as I slowly attempt to regain my footing. I take my crossbow, which had fallen off my shoulder, and put it back in its place, tightening the strap against my body. Leaning down to grab the coconut takes a lot of effort but I still accomplish it. Maybe if I can open it, I'll be able to drink from it or something. I do need a jug at some point.
And that's when I spot the silver parachute coming down from the sky, landing just a few steps away from me. Everything is happening so fast that I barely notice it. Diving forward, I cling to it like it's the only thing keeping me alive. Prying the case open, I discover the rough leather of a hilt and the bright shine that comes from the shimmering blade. Clutching the knife tightly, I regain my footing. And then I'm staggering through the bushes, continuing to attempt to get away from the fight at the Cornucopia.
