{ Of Moles and Toes }

A silhouette waits outside my window
I jump up and I shout to see if you're there
There's nothing but cold sharp air

We were back in the dusty dirty place again. On all sides I saw nothing but dirt and sand and rocks. It hadn't been that long since we had last been here, though time in here was an odd concept and I was never really sure how long anything took. K, at my side, was glowering at everything. "Why are we back here? I hate this place." I just looked at him as we walked, my nonplussed - he didn't seem to notice. "It's so fucking dry." I grunted and adjusted my pack on my shoulders, ignoring him. It was fine for him, he wasn't carrying anything. At least it wasn't hot, in fact with the wind that was clawing at me through my clothes I was starting to feel quite cold. The image of the yellow pajamas made me snort but the thought that they might have made me warmer was something I couldn't ignore. There were more important things to carry.

I ran through my inventory, whispering the name of each item and how many I had of them under my breath. "You don't have to mutter, you know." K was close enough to hear I was talking, but not know what I was saying. "Well you don't have to complain so much." My retort was intended to cut as bad as the wind but K didn't seem to care. My look was flat as I turned my gaze from him, scanning the endless plain land in search of... something. A touch of an image came to my mind, a large X made out of tent poles. My sai was buried under there, the trouble now was finding it again. Good luck with that.

I wake up

The act of burying the sai would be as useless as I had been fighting that bison if I wasn't able to find it again. With my luck I wouldn't be able to find it unless it impaled my foot. Glumly I kicked a rock with my foot, watching it simply sink into the ground instead of travel forward. That was the way things worked for me, I didn't move forward I just dug myself down into a hole until someone pried me out. I looked at Soap, the taller boy walking as quietly as the rest of us. He had been the one to cover for my failures. I hadn't been able to hit the damn floating buffalo even though it was at least three or four times my size. The katana on my back never felt less like mine. Maybe I should give it back to Soap and sit off to the side whenever a fight came up. I wasn't strong or brave, I was just useless. Savannah and Lyric were so much better at all of this than I was, and it shouldn't be like that - I was taller, I was a guy, surely I should be protecting them instead of watching as they slashed and gutted things.

My eyes slid over to where Lyric was walking, noticing how she was struggling with the weight of her pack. I moved to walk closer to her, sticking out a hand to try and take some of the weight of her bag. "Woah hey, if you're hurting you should say something." I attempted to lift the bag off of her shoulders. I could manage the extra bag, especially if it would make it even a little easier on Lyric. "Let me take it." I tried to smile without blushing but I didn't think I was all that successful. My hand brushed against her back and I had to look away because there was no way my face wasn't super red at this point. Still trying to at least alleviate the pressure of the bag on her bad shoulder, I noticed a small patch of churning earth. Stopping, I stared at it a moment before a small furry head popped up from the ground.

"Uh, guys? What's that?" I pointed at the creature with my left hand, my right hand reaching up to grab the hilt of my - not Soap's, my - katana. "I don't like the look of it." K glared at the little thing before quickly gesturing at two more. "Is it just me, or do they not look friendly?" I groaned at his light tone, balancing myself as the little things came nearer. Strangely nervous despite our size difference, I tried an attempt at spearing one of them on the end of my sword. "We've got company. Beady-eyed company."

It hurts a bit. A deep aching radiating down my side. I can't feel it unless I concentrate on it. (Then don't.) Yet still, in the quiet of the morning, as we return to the green pastures we had visited what seemed like so long ago, it hurts a bit. (Has all this truly happened within three days? I'd have lost count if not for the cannons that ring across the arena or the anthems that blaze across the sky.) One cannon has sounded by now, another dead. One step closer to going home. (But I still haven't decided whether I truly want to). So many others deserve their homes much more than I. So many others have a home to return to. But I don't want to die.

A desperate need for survival has filled me, tunneling my vision to anything other than keeping my heart beating. I can feel it's incessant throbs in the palms of my hands and the nape of my neck, giving me a reason to keep going. Giving me more of a reason to live than I ever have. I know that if I do go home, that if my canon never rings across the arena, shattering the ears of those who still remain, I will have a reason. And that's more than enough.

Yet what I yearn for more in this moment than anything else is human touch. I feel so close to these three, who have saved my life on more than one occasion. They have treated me kindly and used their supplies to take away my pain. I truly love them. Though in my time here I have realized that love is not simple, not black and white as I had once believed. My love for them goes far beyond romance, far beyond friendship and even family. I would die for any one of them, if that meant they would make it out of this hell alive. I want one of them to make it out of here. And then we wouldn't be forgotten. We'd become immortalized in memories. We'd live on even after our hearts stopped. My love wouldn't be forgotten.

Is there anyone on my side? Out there in the capitol, where this is nothing but a game. The slut from district six. The girl who stripped for the gamemaker and bedded her friend. Who's nothing but a good liar with a bad attitude. My feet trace the ever growing emerald which thickens every passing step. The morning dew soaking through the bright red pajamas still plastered with the blood of tributes and mutts alike. My fingers tear at the stained zipper, throwing the dirty garment away from me. (Useless) I scowl, tightening the yellow belt now freely apparent in the middle of the dark green landscape. The armor across my feet and hands were far too warm, I could almost feel the sweat pooling against the thick leather. I wouldn't dare throw them away so carelessly. After all, they could one day save my life.

The bag slung against my good shoulder grows heavier each passing step. The pressure upon my collar slowly snaking its way to the broken bone. I grit my teeth, determined to bare the pain. I suppose I did a shit job, as Claude is by my side in seconds. The sweet boy stammers, causing blood to rush to my cheeks once more. "Woah hey, if you're hurting you should say something. Let me take it." he grabs my bag, willingly taking another burden just for me. As he's about to walk away I grab his hand, pulling his lips to mine in a short, soft embrace. "Thanks." I whisper, as a small smile dances across my lips.

What short lived bliss. His shout echoes about dense air. And I see them, black beady eyes staring angrily. "Fuck." I grimace, my hand tightening against the hilt of my silver sai. (Maybe I can actually be helpful... for once.) I draw it, brandishing it outwards at the creatures. I knew the capitol far too well to even believe that these things had an ounce of affection in their bodies. "Get ready for a fight." I grimace, unsure whether or not to make the first more.

"We've got beady-eyed company."

"Can't we have one day." (Of course not.)

I should be dead right now.

We move back toward the world of stone and mud - the place where, strangely enough, I feel at home. But even as I’m breathing in the dust on the wind and allowing my feet to dig into the solid ground, I feel something wavering inside of me. (“You won’t be able to kill me fast enough.”) I gave them every reason to unleash their fury on my the moment I stepped into the Arena. I was prepared to fight tooth and nail in order to save myself and those who, whether I liked it or not, had become important to me. And yet I was entering the third day of the Arena not only alive but also completely untouched, my skin still smooth and hands free of blood (in the most metaphorical sense possible). Lyric suffered a cracked bone, Soap has three lives on his hands, and Claude is suffering a sense of worthlessness. Why hasn’t the Arena yet broken me in the way it’s broken them?

They’re waiting. I can feel it, a promise etched into my bones since the moment I disrespected them so thoroughly during my private training session. They are setting me up for the worst kind of pain, something that will cripple me in front of the entire country. And when they have me, on my knees in agony, they will finish me.

(Last night I dreamed of the four of us, together, somewhere that wasn’t this Arena. It wasn’t District Eight, either, but somewhere better, seated at an old pub where the liquor actually had some flavor and the bartender knew us all by name. The golden warmth was practically tactile in the air between us, the joy an ambrosia to our broken souls. I didn’t miss the looks Claude shot Lyric when she wasn’t looking, sipping his own drink nervously. Soap talked animatedly about a girl he had found, his eyes bright and grin wide, while the three of us listened with lazy smiles.)

They deserve love. Back in reality I watch Claude try to relieve Lyric of her bag, listen to Soap’s encouraging words, and that is all I can think. They deserve to be loved in the best way, without condition, knowing each and every day that someone cares about them. They deserve the happiness of my dream. They deserve so much more than what they’ve been given, and even though I know it’s stupid, I’m angry that they don’t seem to realize it. They might die without realizing it. That thought alone is enough to keep me silent as we trudge on, watching them with sorrow just barely touched with pride.

(In my dream they spoke of all the things they would do and be. I listened silently, smiling to myself. We were old friends rather than allies. We hadn’t survived death together but we’d shared the burdens of life, and that in and of itself made us just as close. I could remember heartbreaks that had never happened and knew inside jokes that didn’t exist. I had no sisters, no father, but they were family enough to me. I remember at one point lifting my glass in toast and smiling at them. “To life.”)

Claude sees them before the rest of us do. I’m forced to shake off the memories - the feelings - and acknowledge the creatures that stand in our path, gritting my teeth and reducing my racing mind to one thought.

My weapons are covered in dried blood.

I don't have anything to wash them off with, so I just leave it. It's not hurting much anyways, just sitting there, but my allies' weapons are cleaner and brighter in the sun, and I kinda like the way they shine. They remind me of the way the light bounces off the big windows of those great Capitol buildings, kinda like the surface of a puddle on a breezy day.

Even that little bit of water is tempting.

The thing is, I'm kinda thirsty. I drank as much as I could before they put me on that plate, but I haven't had a thing to drink since I came here. Last night, before the sun went down, I swore that I could see water in the distance, but I figured it was only one of those things where it looks like there's water but really there's not. I'm not sure what it's called, but the word's on the tip of my tongue, along with a dry sandpaper-like feeling that only makes things worse. The trick is to ignore the feeling entirely, and the only way to do that is to move around or talk or do something, anything to take the mind off of it.

Diglet

Diglet would always remember the first regurgitated toe. His father brought it to him while his mother choked up others for his brothers. It was only a pinky (he was youngest after all), but it was the best pinky toe he’d ever tasted. The crunch of the toenail, the lingering salt of sweat, even a little toe jelly. Simply scrumptious. And that’s when Diglet knew he’d have to have more. When he was old enough, he set off with his brothers, burrowing out of his parents’ home and into the real world in search of toes. But in a world of supply and demand with demand always exceedingly supply, he watched as the rest of the Digitamoles satisfied themselves on toe-shaped roots and branches. What else could they do? Diglet would have none of it. He choked down his roots as Digimon and Dugtrio sniffed in his general direction. The haunting taste of toes, he knew, would always linger on his tongue, a seemingly unattainable green light in his mind. So, when he first felt the vibrations of what could only be footfalls above him, his heart gave a flutter. His brothers were asleep beside him, cuddled up together (such was the way of bachelor Digitamoles), but he had them roused in moments. Popping his head out of the ground, Diglet blinked excitedly in the bright sun. And then—

He gave a groan as pain racked his body. They were attacking him? These humans? That’s what they were. He heard stories of them—but toes! His father’s mouth came close to him in his mind and then it enclosed his and then…toes! Diglet sucked back another cry and lunged forward, mouth wide.

Digimon
As the middle child, Digimon always felt removed from his brothers, Dugtrio, the oldest, and Diglet, the youngest. He’d neither the perchance for toes that Diglet had nor the maturity of Dugtrio. He merely drifted, dreaming of one thing only: a mate to call his own. All the only Digitamoles, the girls, shied away from him. Perhaps it was his snaggletooth or the weird way his brother slaved after toes. Either way, they didn’t like him, only visiting him in his dreams. So, to say that he was angry when Diglet woke him up during a particularly vivid of Dayna, a Digitamole he had a crush on, is an understatement. He was livid, raising his head above the soil to his brother’s level, but he had no time before he was suddenly overcome with agony. Humans--? Attacking? Diglet’s blood was watering the earthy ground and Digimon cried out. No, he would not go like this. Not before he got Dayna!

Dugtrio knew something was wrong when Diglet woke him up. His younger brother was excited, but Dugtio was on red alert. Something was wrong…And then, as he popped his head up after his brothers, he saw: humans.

He did all he could. He tried to signal them, reach them, anything, but as he raced forward, he could see that the humans had already begun to attack. No, a shiver went down Dugtrio’s spine. No, he heard of a Digitamole dying to humans before. No, this wasn’t happening to his brothers. They were all he had. Lurching forward in front of Diglet, Dugtrio sank his teeth into what his brother so lusted after: toes.

Itty Bitty Bitey Moles

The little furry thing didn't see me coming until the last moment and I managed to slice a shallow blow into its belly. Lyric, who had been beside me, swung her sai forward to catch it on the leg. The thing was still alive though, along with the one Soap and Savannah had tried to hit. I yelled and jumped away as they came forward, teeth sharp and aimed at our feet. I gaped at the holes one left in Lyric's boot, feeling sick as the blood started to come forth. A quick glance showed that Soap and Savannah had also been bitten, Savannah worse off than Lyric. I paused a moment when I realized I had escaped the attacks, but then it sank in that these things wouldn't stop at a few chomps. I had to kill them, they hurt my friends and they had to die before we would be able to relax and heal ourselves. "Time to die you bastard."

They were gone. One swift motion and three of my toes were sliding down the fuck's throat. A sharp noise escapes me, a deep red soaking the grass below my feet. "Mother fuck-" I begin, before my eyes find Savannah. My stomach began to churn uncomfortably as I tried to take a step towards her, the absence of my toes making it increasingly difficult to maneuver about the plain. My boots had taken much of the blow, the wound not even hurting as bad as the bone shattered by that awful bison. "Soap! Savannah!" a desperate cry tears my throat. Claude was untouched, and for that I was thankful. I yearned to reach for him, to lace my fingers within his and cry (Why did I do this.)

I'm scared. For me. For Sav and Soap. Hell, even for Claude. "You shit!" I shriek, striking at one of the awful creatures. "Don't hurt them!"

A flood of curses leaves my lips before I can stop it. I stumble back, my foot screaming. My toes. It ate my freaking toes. Blood oozes from what remains of my boot, staining the ground crimson, and I hiss in pain, blinking back any tears that might betray me. The pain shoots up into my foot and my stuttering steps backward almost cause me to collapse, throat tightening in order to prevent a cry of pain. The world swims for a fleeting instant, my allies torn from my focus, before clarity comes crashing back down on me.

This isn't just an injury to my body but something worse. It's a blow to my pride, a cruel joke on the part of the Gamemakers. I will not fall to a mighty tribute or gruesome beast, but a creature far smaller than me that does no more damage that stealing my toes. They've taken a part of my body that I will never have back simply because they can and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

And, in that moment, I know true hatred.

I want the Gamemakers to burn alive. I want to see them at the mercy of all things dark and horrible and cruel, torn apart by the wildest creatures and drowned, strangled, incinerated by all forces of nature. I want to see them banished to the most burning depths of the Earth, but not so far that I can't hear their screams. I want to see them struggle and writhe in agony, rotting from the inside out with only their own wretchedness for company. I want to see them die a hundred horrible deaths, each and every time pleading for my forgiveness before their lives fade. Torture would hardly be a punishment worthy of their sins.

It comes like a wave of fire rising within me and it takes all my effort not to explode, instead taming the rage by focusing on the pain of my allies. Only Claude remains untouched - Soap and Lyric are both bleeding out as I am, features twisted in pain. It's only then that I see another flash of red, though not on a body. On Claude's blade. Every fiber of my being is screaming at me to fall apart or lash out, but I don't dare give the Gamemakers that satisfaction, instead fueling the spark of pride I feel at the expression on his face. Somehow my grimace turns into a grin. "Well done, Cloudy." My gaze slides on, toward Lyric and Soap, and even though my voice is hoarse with pain I refuse to be weak, repeating my encouragement from yesterday. "H-hang in there, you two."

My eyes focus on the last living mutt, then, and finally I tend to the fire simmering so impatiently beneath my skin. My voice is dangerously low when I speak, wavering only slightly. I say it to the mole but my words are meant for the Gamemakers, as I hope they realize. "I thought I told you not to touch them." And then I finally - finally - allow myself sweet release.

I lash out.

The mole at my feet stains the ground red, and there is some more of the glistening scarlet on the blade of my katana. My mouth is open in surprise as I stared at my first kill. I may have been part of the attack to kill others, but this was the first living thing I had killed. "You shit! Don't hurt them!" Lyric's target soon fell limp too, laying not far from my feet as my eyes were on the last of the moles. Her words made me smile, in some sort of grim satisfaction. That was two of the vermin dead, only one left, but Savannah seemed to have something for that. "I thought I told you not to touch them." Her axe flashed in the light as it bit into the face of the mole, blood rushing to coat its surface. "I'd watch out for them if I were you." K was looking between Lyric and Savannah, an odd look on his face. "Wouldn't want to be on their bad side."

I nodded, though I paid him little mind. My eyes were on the last mole thing, which I had thought near dead or dying after Savannah's hit, and yet it still stood. It wavered, about to teeter over when Soap's axe caught it in the chest and knocked it down. There was no movement from the little beast after that. I let out a sigh of relief, glad that I would not be having my feet chewed today. The sight of the blood around my allies' feet reminded me that I was the only lucky one of the four of us, sending a twinge of regret through me. I wasn't able to protect them from these little creatures, just as I hadn't been able to protect them from the Appa. Once again I remained unscathed while they were injured.

I will wait till the end of time

I went over to Soap, knowing he had been the least protected out of the three of them, and wondering if he needed help. I gestured to his bloodied foot. "Here let me." I sat in front of him, cross-legged, and took his injured foot in my lap. Carefully I cleaned the places where his toes used to be before turning some of the medicinal plants into a pulp and smearing it over the wounds. Hopefully that would be enough, or at least keep it from getting infected. Standing, I gave him a smile before moving off to Lyric and Savannah. I dug out that mysterious jar of medicine and the last bundle of medicinal plants from my pack, wondering if that would be enough for the two of them. With their own supplies they should be able to patch themselves up.

"This little piggy went to market," K's voice came from over by Savannah, and I turned my head to look at him. Between his fingers he held Savannah's big toe, blood dripping from the bitten end. I felt like I was going to gag. "This little piggy stayed home," he picked up the next toe, lifting it and looking at it. His head twisted this way and that as if inspecting it. Bile rose in my throat. "This little piggy had roast beef," once again he had put down the toe he was holding to pick up the next one. I tried to swallow the vomit back down, knowing that if I threw up I would waste any food that was left in my stomach. Not to mention, I hated throwing up. The urge grew harder to avoid as K continued. "This little piggy had none," I was bending double now, acid clawing its way up my throat. Still I tried desperately to keep from being sick.

A heave escaped me and the sour taste of my stomach fluids splashed onto my tongue. "And this little piggy cried wee wee wee all the way home." I couldn't keep it down any longer and yellow fluid seared my tongue as I coughed it up. The dirt clumped to the bile, splashing some as more joined it. I heaved again and again, not knowing if I would be able to breathe any time soon. Slowly my stomach contractions eased and I gasped for breath, my pounding head relieving slightly. I stayed doubled over, hands pressed hard against my legs, just above my knees, clenched to grip the flesh tightly. My breathing slowed and regulated but I didn't want to risk straightening yet.

I lifted my head, eyes locking onto the body of the dead mole thing - the one I had killed. It had a life too, I realized, this might have been his family. My gaze shifted from one small dead body to the next. Then I looked at Soap, at Savannah, at Lyric and I knew that, at least for the time being; we were as good as family. The thought was the only thing that could have made me smile, and it did.

"Fuck this." I growl, landing with a soft thud upon blood stained grass. I throw my pack beside me, rummaging within for the materials I needed. I gently wipe the blood from the open wounds as Claude does the same for Sav. I reach out, my hand grasping her shoulder lightly. I cannot feel the bone, still broken within it's makeshift sling, as the adrenaline which makes my head spin has blocked out everything but a deep throbbing within my foot. "You did good, hothead." I give her a small smile, returning to the deep gashes where toes once were.

This isn't so bad. I muse, wrapping them carefully while throwing what once were shoes, behind me. Who needs toes anyway. I could almost feel them, as if they were still on my foot. Tiny phantoms of what used to be. I wish.

My eyes find Claude, once again unscathed. I was almost angry at the boy, for what? his luck. can't be that great if he ended up here. And the sudden flare dies down into a warm glow. The boy seems to have problems of is own his face contorting into something of disgust. And then he threw up.

I stand, my foot now adequately wrapped. "You fucking dumbshit." My hand connects with the back of his head. Enough to shock, not wound. "This is the goddamned hunger games. And you fucking throw up?! Do you want to starve faster." I'm seething by now, more worried about my companions than angry. "We barely have enough food as is. We do not need to waste some because you couldn't fucking keep it down." I kick some dirt over the bile, before storming back over to my things at an awkward waddle. "Don't make me worry any more than I have to." I mutter, absentmindedly rummaging through my things.

"You guys are my family now. Don't make things harder than they already are." A clear diamond slips of the top of my nose, landing on the herb which Claude had given me.

I had tried so hard not to become attached. I had wanted so badly to see them as allies and only that. So that the thought of losing even one of them didn't strike a savage fear into my heart. And the guilt of what I would put them through, ripred forbid, I die. I know that if it were to come down between me and one of them I would lay upon the ground. I would allow them to run me through. To go home. Something which I've never had. And now, never will.

I hope they wont pity me, when I finally kick the bucket. The underdressed, overly made up capitolites with a sadistic streak. I don't want their sympathy. I don't want anyone's sympathy. I made my own choice and it was mine to make. I'm not responsible for anyone but myself.

And now them.

The realization almost hurts, like a bison had rushed me once more. I won't let them die.

Fuck the games.

Fuck everything.

"Stop." It comes out like a croak, my every muscle bracing itself against the pain. My jaw is tense as trembling fingers spread the medicine over my toes, flakes of dried blood rubbing off the container. It's some strange concoction straight from the labs, no doubt, and it both tingles and stings when it comes into contact with what's left of my foot. My teeth grind together, expression pulled taut. Fresh fire shoots into my veins, not at all soothing as it should be, but I trust in its remedy. ~~(Perhaps I've been trusting just a bit too much lately.)~~ My heartbeat, racing with adrenaline, thrums where the bones were splintered. I glance up at them, my gaze stern. "Both of you, stop it. I've dealt with enough pain for one day. I don't need your bloody overemotional reactions to make things worse."

I rise unsteadily, glaring at the small dead bodies on the ground. If they were any other type of creature I might feel sorry for them, but they were designed by the Capitol and that fact alone is enough to freeze the pity from my chest. It was the same when the giant flying beast fell at our feet yesterday. A life ruled by the bloodthirsty Gamemakers is not worth living. We, of all people, should know that.

I'm still angry. I'm angry at the moles for eating my toes, I'm angry at the Gamemakers for letting me live this long, and I'm angry at myself for caring too much about everything. I bite it back, though, brushing the cold sweat off my forehead with a blood-stained palm before glancing around. We are not the four tributes who played truth or dare just days ago. Now we're a wreck, splintered in our agonies and joined by an affection none of us want to feel. My fingers twitch, wishing they could heal souls as easily as they could wounds. I take a step forward, not sure which one I'm moving toward to comfort, but the knee above my bad foot buckles at the shot of pain and I collapse back to the ground with a small yelp quickly followed by colorful cursing. Screw this.

"You know what? We're a mess. I vote we stay here for a while."
