Between the Mind and Body {Anni vs. 1 pygmy cattle, Day 6}

Was it possible for the world to change in one day? Even the color of the sky looked different in Anni’s eyes as she kept running away from the murderers other tributes. She couldn’t tell if it was from her injuries—the blood had only stopped flowing but she was scared the wound would open again—or from the realization that Ari was not running with her like he was supposed to. What she wouldn’t have given to make sure Ari was still alive—her water, her food, her health, her life. She should have at least tried to grab his token, a way to remember him, but she remembered being so scared, so lost, that she ran off without giving him another thought.
She had curled up that night, wishing that she was the one who had died, wishing that her voice had been just that much louder that she could have distracted that damn blond boy. She had then spent another good part of the night thinking about all of the ‘what if’s that she knew she couldn’t correct and it broke her heart. Every time she closed her eyes, she would see his body lying on the ground. Every time she looked down at her hands, she could only see his blood as it flowed freely from his injuries. Her body would start shaking, her lips quivering, and her eyes widening until she could no longer take the pain and Anni started clawing at herself. It’s my fault, all my fault.
Her sleep was filled with dreams of the dragon and the other tributes, but she was facing them alone. No, no, no. Ari, where are you? I can’t face them off by myself. The dragon ignored the other tributes and lunged at her, slashing at her with its monstrous claws and breathing fire in her direction until she could feel the flames burn against her skin. It didn’t take long for her to die in that dream—once each of her opponents had their turn with her, her body could no longer take it and all she saw was—she jolted awake once the dream version of the dark haired boy lunged at her with his weapon. Her heart raced as if she had really been in that situation and the beads of sweat mixed with the tears that were falling from her eyes.
When her body had calmed down ever so slightly, she resumed trying to sleep, but her eyes refused to stop tearing up until finally, she slipped into a state of deep sleep. There were no fights in this dream, just herself…at home. The familiar sight of the dining table her family would always sit at comforted her, even though she was aware that it was all a dream. She was barefoot, in a soft dress, and she called out to her family members but no one was there to greet her, no one except Ari. He was whole in this dream, not even the scar on his cheek was there. He was in his tribute uniform, but what Anni couldn’t understand was why he was there in the first place. “Ari…?” she whispered, trying to solve the puzzle of her dream. Ari would not offer her any help, though, as he gave her a sad smile and dissolved into particles. “No!” she shouted as she awoke from her dream for the second time that night. Still in her curled up position, she rested her head, trying to discern what was real and what was just her imagination.
As morning came, she knew she would have to move away from the hot and dry area where the dragon had swooped down and the blond boy had killed. Her body felt defeated with each step, her soul out of willpower. As she noticed the change in scenery, she was so senseless to her surroundings that she didn’t hear the roar in the distance, she didn’t see the movement in the air, until the last second when she looked up and the air was moving in a way she had never seen before. Common sense would have told her to turn around and run away, but her legs were weak after so many days of moving around and the air picked her up violently and before she knew it, she was in the air.
The experience was surreal, painful, nauseating, and Anni felt extremely vulnerable in a situation where she couldn’t fight back but she didn’t know what else to do. Was she even in the same area? All she wanted was for the air to let her go from its grasp which it did as she fell down from what felt so high up, and the impact of the ground on her body left her gasping for air and in pain. Rolling over, she laid on her back as she wished that it had killed her. No! I have to keep going. But what was the point in being this place alone? At least if she died, she wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.

Horrified, she looked down at her belt to see that her weapon was gone, the one she had picked up as she escaped from the cornucopia. Shaking in fear and anxiety, she checked herself to see what else was missing but everything else seemed to be in place except for her weapon. She had no choice; she was going to have to rely on Aidin’s knife if she wanted to survive. Removing it from her belt, she held it in her right hand and struck when the mutt came into view.
