Her fan was a flame, ignited from her own flesh that burned with passion. She was a vessel of power, with a ticking time-bomb for a brain and a firecracker for a heart. She was amazing.
And then she felt the pain.
It was all at once, and it surrounded her like a fog, twisting around her arms as she tried to fan it away, chasing her as she ran from it. She fell to her knees, her wet hair falling in her face as mud and sand and water splashed all around her. She slumped, looking down at the waves, noticing for the first time how beautiful it all was, even now, with her blood, and everyone else's, poisoning it, it was still beautiful.
Finally, she fell to her left, her back soaked but the rest of her still above water. The pain had completely disappeared then, just as quickly as it came, and she knew it was happening. (And she felt a different kind of pain.) One that made her regret not ever taking Soren up on his offers of an actual date, one that made her regret not getting to know Ares and Francesca, or even Argonite better. Pillsbury climbed out of the bag and onto her lap, looking at her curiously, and a tear stung her eye. What would happen to him? The Capitol would have had him eaten or destroyed or something terrible, she was sure.
Her allies were there, lifting her into the air and dragging her away, but it was pointless. They could have just left her there in the mud and it wouldn't have changed what was to come.
When they finally rested, and Magenta was once again on the ground, she grabbed ahold of the nearest person's hand. Ares's, she thought. "Take Pillsbury, please. Don't let him die, okay? Don't let the Capitol have him. Please." Then she let the little guy crawl into Ares's palm, and he was gone. "Argo... I need Argo." He was there. Alive, battered, bruised, one-armed, but alive. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry but, I'm not making it out of this. I'm not lasting much longer, and I just wanted to tell you I was sorry. I'm sorry, I am so, so sorry for all of this. I need you to win, okay? I need one of you to win, and live and be happy." How sad it was that she had to be on her death bed to finally speak her heart instead of her mind.
"I need someone to be happy."
Her vision with blank, and her chest fell for the last time, and a cannon shook the arena.
I am blind. Or I feel that way, at least. I guess people aren't kidding when they say the light is really bright. It surrounds me, almost like I am the source of it all, and when I can finally see clearly, I find myself in a room. I am completely dressed n white, and my hair is down like I have always liked it. I am all alone, but I don't feel lonely. I feel pretty great, actually.
"Magenta Ryker," A voice says, and I immediately prepare for the worst. Instead of being attacked, though, I turn and find a boy wearing a similar outfit to my own, with choppy short hair, a long neck, and a handsome smile. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you! I am just here to um... explain things. I roll my eyes.
"You don't have to. I'm dead, right?" He puts a finger to his lips, his brows slightly pinched together in confusion. "You really are a tough girl, huh?" "Always have been." He folds his hands behind his back. "Right, moving on. Well, yes, you are dead, and this is the afterlife." "Huh," I say. "Guess people know what they are talking about after all. And here I thought I would just end up as worm food." Drace seems uncomfortable, but he continues. "Right, well, um, anyway, this is the afterlife. It's basically like you have inherited your own kingdom, except you don't have to deal with all the boring stuff like paperwork and beheadings like most royalty. You get your own personal Heaven, which is pretty cool." "So, if all of this is true, then is the bit about being able to watch over our families true?" Suddenly, I miss my parents and Soren.
"Yes, absolutely. Just don't spend too much time around the ones you love. I know it sounds weird but it kind of hurts in a way, seeing them move on. It's really cool that they are as well, but it still stings. Just be careful, I guess." "So, I don't need to see them?" I ask, grief filling my chest. I want my Mom and Dad. Even if I only get to see them once, it's more than enough. I just need to know they are okay. "No, you can see them anytime, I just want you to be careful. Sometimes the ones you love move on a bit more quickly than you would like, and start dating your best friend." Suddenly I think this is more about him than it is me. "Oh, well I-" I start, but he cuts in. "I mean it's not enough that he already lived with her, for Ripred's sake, but he had to go and- whatever, sorry, back to you."
I laugh.
I actually laugh, and it feels amazing, and I know I am going to be okay. I'm not sad, I'm not in pain, I'm happy. "Sorry," he repeats, and I pat him on the back. "It's fine, tell me more about it." And he does. He tells me everything as we walk along, and I find myself growing to love this place. It's really not to shabby, after all. I'm going to be okay. I'm going to be okay. I am dead, but I am gonig to be okay.
And that's all that matters.
