DECATHLON: 100M SPRINT

Welcome to the Decathlon tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character on the starting blocks and running, and then paste the code [*roll=349+1050] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 1264 is read as 12.64 seconds)

The competitor with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

Da dum. Da dum. Da dum. That's all Xander focuses on as he walks into the huge stadium, today he was going to make some history. Today will be the start of a twelve year old winning the decathlon. Xander had heard all of it, all the talk show hosts talking about how I will be blown away. Well I am here to prove this wrong, he maybe small but he knows he has enough heart and spirit to win this thing. He was going to show him what a prodigy he was, so when his Hunger Games come they will already know his name. With a booming announcement it was time to line up for the 100m sprint. He had always been fast to make up for his size and now he ad to prove how fast he really was.

As he lowered himself on his starting block he envisioned himself in the Hunger Games. He is being chased by a ravenous tribute trying to kill him and the only way to escape was by out running him. The vision was so real in was causing Xander's heart to beat faster and faster and faster... bang! The starting gun fired and he ran as fast as his feet could carry him. The tribute was right on his heels so he ran even faster. His breaths quickened but he would not stop running. Until finally exhausted he escaped the tribute over the finish line. With shaking eyes he looked up at his time.

It wasn't the most obvious opportunity to cause suffering, these Olympics, in fact it seemed almost useless for that, but nevertheless I was here. It was a matter of pride, surely, that had sent me here. Otherwise, why would I sentence myself to spending time in such a foolish competition. Standing here at the starting line is an odd feeling, I'm not used to a type of rush like this, I suppose that's due to my skills being put to the test in front of thousands. It shouldn't matter though, I am strong and fast, I glide like a snake over the ground so quick that no one knows where I will next show myself. I shall reach the end of this game before anyone sees that I have even left.

There's the bang, a sharp sound that alerts everyone to the start of this petty, pointless, exercise. They may as well just hand be the gold now because I won't stand for silver, and I am already across the finish line. Does no one realize that I am the most agile here? Must I prove what I already understand? No one compares to me.

The Olympics were not going as Milo had planned, and she was starting to wonder if she had seriously over-estimated herself. No, that was impossible, she was the best of course. ~~But she had only just turned fifteen and ripred these people had to be two times her size.~~ Did Beatrice give up when she was surrounded by 23 enemies? No, she swaggered her way through battle and did not take a single hit from anyone but herself (for sometimes, you accidentally hit yourself with your own weapon while applying lipstick. Shit happens.) Milo was determined to win something, she did not want her little cousin Annalise, or her older cousins Elliot and Barty to bring home all the Birch glory. She had to win at something, she had to.

Glaring at Phyneas, who was right besides her, she waited for the timer to go off.

When it did, she ran with all her might, every step echoing her Birch pride. In the very end, however, Milo found that she wasn't first. Or second, or third. She was sitting right in the middle, not the worse and not the best. Was this real life? Had she really lost, again? Swearing under her breath, she looked at everyone else's time.

Hey, at least she had beat her dear old cousins time, right? Wait, no...he was sitting there almost a second faster than her.

Pinning and re-pinning her sock bun for the high jump had been a pain. Perhaps it had not been wise to keep going at the jump, time and time again. She could have stopped at 1.6 meters, which was almost her undoing. But no, she pushed on, running faster and jumping higher. And for what, in the end?

So for the 100m sprint, she compromised. Neon eyeshadow and hot pink lipstick, to distract from her plain ponytail. The length of her blonde hair bounced as she stretched out her tendons. She stood at the end of the track, watching her competition rush by. She never smiled, never scowled. She just watched. Until June Serpentine's time was called, and then she casually stepped onto the track alongside the girl. "You know, I hear you can OD on testosterone. Oh, dear, you have a little hair growing out of the bottom of your chin."

She smirked, the plastic smirk she'd mastered as infant, and then took her position at the start line. Ready, set, bang!

The high jump hadn't gone as she had planned at all, instead of leaving her with a feeling of a job well done she was angry and in a punchy mood at her gregarious mess up. Her hair was pulled back into a jet black ponytail and it was as if the devil herself was sitting on her shoulder. She spaced her feet apart as she waited for the gun to go off, telling her she could run. Her confidence with jumping was pretty much shot now but she knew that she was fast. She'd been running since she was very young and often worked on her sprinting. If there was one thing that she was exceptional at, it was speed, despite her small size.

I breath in the salty district four air. It's the first day of the olympics and nine others stand around me. I silently look over each opponent as I stretch out my arms and legs. I change positions every so often to stretch out a different muscle, simultaneously shifting my stare down another person. I see a few familiar faces from the training center back in two. I've never spoken to any of them, but it eases me a bit to have that sense of familiarity. Other than them, I couldn't tell you the difference between the competitors from district one and district four. They all look ready, confident that they'll win. I can't wait to wipe that smugness of their faces.

I ready myself at the starting line, crouching down with my hands firmly planted on the ground. I take a few more glances, trying to stay aware of my surroundings. I take a deep breath as I anticipate the gunfire that'd signal the start of this race. And as soon as that glorious sound rings through my head, I lunge forward. I watch the finish line come closer and closer as my legs move faster than I can think. My eyes are set on my destination, vision blocking out those around me.

Soren tells me he has nightmares where he's running away from his demons. I said nothing in response and pretended to be sympathetic, like I had no idea what he felt like when he woke up the next day. I wonder if he knows what it's like to be running from your demons in real life, to hear your feet pound against the pavement for hours upon hours, desperate to let the rhythm drown out everything else. There's something oddly cathartic when your legs are screaming in pain - maybe it's just that. They're doing the screaming for you.

I hear screaming now - but it's not coming from my mouth. It's pouring from the waves of people screaming in support and cheering on their favourites. I wonder (again, with the wandering thoughts - I should stop and focus but my mind is constantly pulling and pushing against my will) if they scream this loudly for the tributes in the Capitol. At least I'll come home after this is all over. And yet part of me doesn't want to leave at all.

Like an arrow, I think. Quick, fast, in the blink of an eye.

We take flight, and I keep on running.

I walk with my head down, glancing at my competitors. Ares used to mock me for being small, but now I feel I can hold my own. Ares would joke that I was the slowest runner in the family, but since his death, since he chose to fight rather than run, I've been training. I feel the track through my blue sneakers, slightly bouncy and spongy. I know what it should feel like, and how the shoes should cling ever so softly to the track. I quietly step up to the starting line, with the other competitors of the decathlon. They all seem to be strong, each and every one of them. So few from District 4, only the boy whose sister was in the 67th, and only 2 from the spoiled District 1. I sigh as I look all the other competitors from District 2, I recognize one girl from the training center, other then that they are all strangers.

I return my attention to the race. 100m's to determine my fate. I take a deep breath. Ares time to prove you wrong. I crouch and with a gun shot I run. The white line at the end of the track tells me to run. Run with everything I got. So I push myself, I push myself harder than I ever did while training for these games. My strides are wider than canyons, my muscles burn hotter than an inferno, but I force myself to enjoy it. All that matters is this race.

I'll prove you wrong Ares, I will.

No matter how much she considered herself to be above the whole spectacle, Elya Johnwayne's fierce love of competition made it impossible to pretend as if she wasn't enjoying herself. She'd entered a handful of events: the epee tournament that would commence the next day, archery, and had accidentally been placed on the roster for the rowing competition to boot. But perhaps the most interesting was the decathlon, a series of ten different events over the course of five days, beginning with the 100m sprint.

And, funnily enough, the bulk of the entrants, much like Elya Right-eye herself, were the left behind siblings of Careers past. If she'd given a shit about press coverage, the surly career might've been thrilled by the literal field day the Capitol press was like to have — or perhaps annoyed that there were Lyons and Baitwells and Shores to steal the focus away from her — but she didn't, so she remained as impassive as ever.

On the starting line, her one iron eye trained itself on the starting pistol — after all, the smoke preceded the bang and even if it was only a fraction of a second difference, Elya would pass up nothing that would give her a competitive edge. They started — first smoke, then it fired — and she pushed herself down the track with every fiber, dark hair waving like a jolly roger in the wind behind her.
