SABRE ROUND 4: BRONZE MEDAL MATCH: GHRAM VS. REX

Welcome to the Individual Sabre tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The fencing strips are located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The three fencing events (Epee, Sabre, and Foil) are tournaments, which follow brackets. Each match will have its own thread, which will be posted by me. Feel free to roleplay your character fencing their opponent for each touch and then paste the code [*roll range="1-4"] without the asterisk into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This corresponds to the number of points your competitor scored in a row, and will be added to your total. All fencing bouts go to fifteen touches and follow turn order, as a regular fight using the combat system would.

The competitor who reaches fifteen points first wins the bout and moves on to the next round. As the bouts finish, the winners will be recorded here; when all the first round bouts have been completed, the bracket will be updated and the next round will start.

Tigerius Rex —

The pressure was off - not that it bothered Tiger in the slightest. His last bout against Leandros Halle had been tight — the other boy ended up winning by a mere point — sending Tiger to a final losers-match for the bronze medal. Win or lose, the eldest Rex boy was thrilled to be faced with such good sport so far.

He planned to do his best — and destroy Rolex Ghram — and then head over to the sabre championship to root for Leandros. Tiger had taken a serious liking to his previous opponent, who'd been a wonderful match and an even better attitude about the whole thing. But this was a new bout, and a new opponent. Maybe he'd wind up feeling the same about the boy across the piste — maybe not. Either way, he bounded up to the center of the strip, gave his customary salute, and slid his mask down over his shock of orange hair.

Things seemed to be falling apart for him now. Where he was once a strong athlete he now felt crippled and weakened. The sword in his hands was fighting him as much as his opponent was and he could do nothing more than lose. Each time he failed he was sunk deeper into the sense of fragility. What he needed right now was something, anything, to show him he wasn't as far gone as he believed. The large boy in front of him - Tiger Rex if his memory for names was at all accurate - was not that. Raising his sabre before him, he prepared to be smashed aside by the much bigger boy. It was times like this that really drove home the fact that he only rose to a height of five foot nine. The height difference left him feeling like he was standing in front of a tree of a boy, while he was only a stick. Everything just felt futile. He wanted to believe he could come out victorious but all of the odds seemed to be stacked against him, hell even his own mind was against him.

Memories of how he felt after losing her rose to his mind and he compared the feeling he had suffered then to what he was going through now. It was almost the same, but the pervasive sense of loss was gone, or at least shifted. He hadn't lost someone he cared about, he simply lost his way and how he was before. An imaginary hand extended to him, rain falling on his head, and then he was on his feet looking at a girl so much different from her. Saylor, she had helped get him back together and now even she was gone. Why was she gone? She must have left him for some reason beyond wanting to hurt him, surely. Perhaps it was his horrible attitude that he tried to hide behind smiles and kind gestures.

And now he was once again stuck in that rut. Only this time he didn't have Saylor to lift him out of it. That just meant he had to lift himself out. It would take effort, but he had to do it. The last time he let himself wallow in his own misery he wasted months moping. Doing so in the middle of a sabre fight would be stupidity, and so he had to let go of his past failures so that he can focus on the present. It was all that had to matter now. He would later be able to crawl back into his dark hole and live there, but for now he had to finish what he started.

The match started and he felt three slashes almost instantaneously from his large opponent. Grimacing, he attempted to reciprocate.
