Emery’s pain was unimaginable, not the one on her arm but the one within her. She had see it, watched it, and relived it as tears ran from her eyes. She saw Kendrick’s knife go through Kia’s eye. He ended Kia’s life without a moment of hesitation, without a moment of remorse. It pained her to have to run away from Kia but she couldn’t stay and weep over him. She had to do it as she ran from the scene. She had even been crying as she preformed some minor first aide on her arm. Luckily it stopped the bleeding there, but not that of her heart. She just wanted to hug him again and tell him that they would survive together. Talk like the way they did back in the Capitol, but she couldn’t. She could never bring him back, the only way she would ever see him again was if she died. Yet even that wasn’t for sure. No one actually knew if there was an afterlife, obviously. Emery was now sitting somberly against a darkened area of the cavern. She had been waiting for her other allies to arrive but they hadn’t shown up yet. Then she heard feet and yelling as she prepared herself and her torch. Another fight was coming and Emery’s stomach twisted with fear. She longed to run but she couldn’t she would fight for Kia. She would honor him here and now.

Whatever was surging through me is now gone 'cause I can feel every single bit of pain. Everything hurts. Something runs down my face, and I can't tell if it's blood, sweat, or tears. I was completely stupid to think I stood a chance. I don't got no chance of winning. I ain't gonna do well, and I can't see a thing. Am I dead? I place on of my hands upon my chest and I can feel my heart beating behind the skin. It's beating pretty darn fast too. Why ain't there no lights? I can't tell. I don't know where I am. I don't know where Kirk is. I gotta find him, but I don't know how to even start looking. It's still very possible for tributes to be standing near me. Maybe if I'm quiet nobody would hear me, or see me for that matter.

I force myself into a seated position on the ground. Pain surges through my right arm the moment it touches the ground. I remember the sound of it crunching. I could fell the bone breaking under the weight of a weapon. It hurt. Everything hurts. I don't know much 'bout anything, but I paid attention to the first aid instructor, but I don't got nothing to help fix the pain. I drop the items by my side for a second, and I run my hand over my right arm. The bone ain't right. It's all messed up. I grit my teeth fighting not to scream in pain 'cause I don't want anybody else to hear me 'cause I am in a very bad place. I don't wanna move. I don't wanna do anything. I just wanna lay down and close my eyes and go to sleep, but I can't. I promised Ma and Pa that I would try my hardest. I gotta fight. If not for me, for them. I gotta make them proud.

Ma, Pa, if you're watching, I hope I'm making you proud. Don't cry yet. I ain't dead yet. I blink a couple times trying to get used to the total darkness, but I can't do nothing. Nothing gonna get done if I stay here. Using my left arm as a lever, I push myself into a standing position. This broken bone hurts worse than anything else I imagine. Kirk, where are you? I don't know if he's dead or alive. I don't know what's even going on 'cause it's a horrible feeling. He might be dead. Everyone I know might be dead. I can't think 'bout them being dead 'cause it just ain't possible. Allowing my right arm the chance to relax, I slowly move around the arena trying to find where I am, but I don't got no directions. Someone save me. Anyone. Please. Someone.

Nobody is gonna wanna save a kid like me. I ain't no use to the Capitol. I'm replaceable to everyone but my family. Nobody needs me. I'm gonna be another face in the sky wherever that sky is. Gonna go to that city by the stars that Kirk told me 'bout. It sounds so lovely there. I wanna see it so bad, but that only means my family ain't never gonna see me alive again. I can't do anything. I don't got no idea how to fight. I can't even heal a broken arm, but that might be 'cause it's harder to heal than a cut or a scratch. I feel like I've just been ran over by a herd of cows. My body ain't wanting to move. I wanna just give up and lay down and die, but I can't. I gotta fight. I gotta keep going for Ma, for Pa, and finally for me.

With each passing second, that box sounds more and more welcoming. I can't just go on and do this. I can't keep moving. Everything hurts. Thinking hurts. Moving hurts. But I gotta go on. I need to find Kirk, Crusader, and Animus. I gotta find them and make sure they are alright. I ain't alright, but as long as they are all is good. It ain't right being here. I can't make it far. I ain't gonna do well. I wanna cry. I wanna scream, and part of me just wants to die so I can get this over with, and I can get outta here. Nobody needs me. I don't need me. I'm best off dead. Just like the Capitol wants. I ain't no fighter. I ain't no killer. I don't got that inside me, but here I am. I fought. I attacked, and I know it ain't 'bout to stop any time soon.

In all my years of living, in all my years of solving equations, solving problems, reading books with thousands of pages in them, I have never, ever been that confused as I was in the chaos that had ensued. Had it not been for the light fire that was barely illuminating the room I would've been swinging in the dark. I never would have seen who had attacked me. The girl from six, Galaxy I believe her name is. The very light throbbing on my shin I feel I have her to thank for (not that I'm complaining, I've seen tributes break each other's limbs with their bare hands and feet).

District seven, July? Yes, it's her I have to thank for the very light throbbing on my right arm I have her to thank for. I make sure I remember those two. Back in nine I let that kind of stuff slide with no retaliation. People could laugh at me, throw something at me or even spit at me I wouldn't retaliate; that's because I had walls of ice and stone around my heart. But in here... Walls would do me no good, I could retaliate however I wanted, I was under no obligation to let wrongs against me slide. No more, no more, no more. Those two girls are sticking in my mind.

After walking for what feels like hours of walking around in the dark and feeling paranoia I finally find them. My allies. I'm only managing to guess by their voices which are vividly familiar from spending days in the training centre with them.

And then I spot it. Flickers, shuffles in the dark. And it sure as hell can't be anyone I'm familiar with. Before I can even warn them Esme lights up her weapon and it's so blinding I even have to flinch away from it and cover my eyes. And to my surprise the very small girl from ten actually gathers up the courage to swing the fiery pole at the unfortunate tribute standing there. In the firelight I manage to catch their faces. I spot the girl from twelve, Emery who made no impression on me but her friend. Well, well, just my luck..

The small girl's flaming pole connects with the other small girl's arm and a sickening but disturbingly satisfying crunch is accompanied with the impact along with the sizzling and cackling of the flames. She's definitely not the fittest. Not with a broken arm that is.

While I am impressed and very surprised I'm now torn. Do I get retribution or do I make the smart decision and go for the weaker link with a broken arm?

Well that's an easy choice.

So I lift up my own pole and viciously swing.

July's calf hurt where she'd gotten slashed; her whole body ached from lesser bruises; the first aid had helped but there was still pain. Worse, she had looked back as she fled and had seen Kia go down and not get up again; two of the four of their little group of allies had never made it out of the bloodbath.

Now there was only her and Emery, both of them wounded, Emery worse than herself. She thought they were on the outskirts of the cornucopia, but her mind seemed to be not quite working properly, not quite focusing on the situation at hand; at least she was not frightened anymore for the moment, though she had a vague feeling that that would not last. How could it, when the who idea here was causing terror?

In a way, she felt as she would on those work days when she would push herself into exhaustion and then past it, though the bloodbath, while unspeakably horrible, had not been as physically taxing as July's days of work. Actually, other than the fact of maybe-friends and certainly-allies dying for no good reason, and being wounded herself, the physical part had been almost easy. It was just her mind that wished to have a day off.

She had a knife, now, hardly an ideal weapon, but something. It had a name carved into it. Drace Vandel. Who was he? A former tribute, long dead? What else could it mean? Well, if she wanted a better weapon, thought July, maybe she could kill someone if she managed to sneak up on them and take their weapon. As that thought crossed July's mind, she felt a mental blink, shocked that she had casually thought such a thing. Obviously the Games, that bloodbath she'd been lucky to escape from, were already effecting her mind, along with the fact that she was starting to get really thirsty. No wonder, the way they'd been running.

Four tributes were dead. That left nineteen others besides herself. Emery was her ally, for the moment, so that left eighteen tributes who wanted to kill her. The odds seemed overwhelming, making July smirk for no one to see, it was ridiculous, hopeless; she should feel terrified, but she was just as glad that, for the moment, her emotions seemed to be in shut down mode.

I'm not afraid of a good fight, and if that's what the Capitol wants, I'll give it to them. First, I need to find my allies, but it's dark, and I can't see anything. Sometimes I think I can hear someone scream, and I jerk my head around looking for them, but I can't find anyone. Not that they matter, but I don't think I could live with myself if Stella died after I promise to lay my life down for her. I keep moving throughout the arena trying to see what's going on. It's dark, and loud. My footsteps echo throughout the walls. I don't know what this place is. I don't know if I love it or hate it. I guess I hate it more. Heart pounding in his chest, Kirk circled around the cornucopia, searching for his allies and hoping to avoid anyone else. Which had somewhat difficult. The darkness ahead was foreboding and it seemed that no one wanted to risk breaching it just yet. He had a moment to catch his breath and so he did so, squatting down and letting his breathing return to semi-normal. The bloodbath was crazy. So many people running around and flailing. Not an experience he was anxious to repeat, but slightly easier to manage than he had expected. Esme was probably close by, though with the echoing, it was hard to tell where sound was coming from.

The pinpricks of light in the darkness were easy to follow, and it didn’t look like anyone had even left the cornucopia. Kirk could make out dim silhouettes near whatever light sources people were carrying. But there were more than seemed safe. A chilling noise blasted through the darkness and Kirk shivered. Four cannons. Only four. Twenty tributes now. But four was not nearly enough. The careers would no doubt be on the prowl. It was rare that upper district tributes didn’t have some kind of bloodlust egging them on. Kirk had seen enough people hunted down on day one’s to know what to expect.

After some bumbling, he managed to find his allies. All three of them were relatively close, but so were several other tributes. The fighting was not over. With growing horror in the dim light of Esme’s torch, Kirk could see blood dripping from Esme’s face, and the arm that wasn’t holding the torch was bent an odd angle. Mercy me, he thought in anguish. Who did this to her? Was it the one she just struck? Or one of the tributes he had seen attack her in the bloodbath? Not wanting to let anymore time pass without doing something, Kirk brought his axe down, hoping to scare the other two tributes into running away. /font]

Emery didn't want to stay long that was for sure. She was sick of all the fighting and blood for one day. She simply wanted to find a crevice to climb into and attempt to sleep. The blood was getting to her, the death was getting to her, and Kia's death was really hanging heavy on her. She just wanted a night away from these maniacs to rest and try to recover. One thing was for sure though, this fight wasn't helping in the slightest. She also felt like actually living through the day so leaving might help. So with a final burst of energy she sprinted away to the cavernous darkness.

I jump in shock when I see who was standing in front of me. "Stop!" I yell at the top of my lungs not caring who hears me 'cause Emery is standing in front of me. "It's a mistake! I swear!" I watch as she runs away, and I hope she forgives me 'cause I ain't meaning to hurt her. She's my friend, and I don't want her to die. I ain't wanting anyone to die but someone gotta. I ain't sure what to do, or think. "Emery, I'm sorry. Please forgive me." But she's running away. And I don't blame her 'cause I just attacked her. I can feel tears forming in my eyes, and I don't care if anyone sees them 'cause it ain't making me weak. I take a deep breath and turn towards my alliance. I'm happy to see them more than ever. But it still hurts. Everything hurts. I can't do this. I'm best off dead. I wanna go to that place next to the stars. Where everything is gonna be perfect.

This is one of the problems with survival of the fittest; it feels like as humans we slowly regress back to Neanderthals. I want to be going forwards not backwards but I feel like I'm reversing years and years back in time as I hold this club like weapon and try to pummel this smaller tribute with it. Is that all I'll be good for? Beating tributes to death with a stick like a Neanderthal? But my options are severely limited. And to make it worse I didn't even hit her very hard, from what I heard echoing through this place Esme broke something in Emery and I don't think I did much at all.

How can I expect to survive if I can't even hit someone with a stick?

I catch Kirk and Crusader in the firelight attacking July. The bitch. To my disappointment they don't manage to maim her particularly brutally. Damn it. But in the end we're not careers, we haven't trained to kill and maim people like the upper districts have. We're just kids, slowly adapting to a survival mindset. Before this I had fantasies of badly maiming the people who thought I was vulnerable and bullied me. I never thought I'd be maiming random kids for real though.

But this is the games and I want to find the answer to survival. I must find the answer to survival. And to do that I'll have to try and kill these two...

Unfortunately, the two girls realized how much danger they could potentially be in and actually flee. They got away. I hesitated too much, I thought too much. I couldn't pull my weight and actually do something to the weakest link. I can't even look at my allies and I find myself scowling at the ground, as if it's the ground's fault. "They got away," I state, loud enough for everyone to hear me but not exactly directed at anyone. I can't put the blame on anyone, I barely did anything.

"Never mind I guess." I say, holding my head up high again, it's not really supposed to reassure them, it's supposed to reassure myself.

No point in crying. Pick this up, learn from this. No point in crying about the canon that never was.

Knowing that she had no chance if there were any further combat right now, July turned and ran away from the fight, just as fast as her legs would carry her. She was pleased to note that at least she was pretty quick, and was thankful to her daily regimen of work that had resulted in her being in good physical condition. Right now, she did not care about winning, about killing anyone else, about the Games or about anything other than just surviving right now. Just making it out, trying to make sure they both made it out. she clutched the knife as she ran, pack over her back. Around her she heard screams and squealing, and definitely did not want to know what was making the sounds (was that going to be dinner? or was she dinner?) she just ran, ran, ran, trying to escape with all that she had left in herself at this moment, desperate suddenly to keep on living - it was a better feeling than fear, adrenaline coursing through her veins.

I don't know what's going on. One moment I ran here to fight, the next moment Esme is screaming it's a mistake. Please don't attack, and she took off running. She looked horrible, like she'd been placed through a machine and they attempted to harvest her. It broke my heart seeing her that way. I want to help her, so I follow after her. Truth be told, Kirk had no desire to fight anyone at this juncture. His only want was to get Esme somewhere safe, Preferably before anyone brought her closer to death’s door. When his team started running, he ran with them into the nearest tunnel. Into the darkness pierced only by Esme's torch. He didn’t know how much of the arena was shrouded in eternal night, but he had a gut feeling that he wasn’t going to like the answer.
