I sit in the corner of the damp cell. My heart races and i feel like i am a bird, trapped, locked away in a cage never to be able to spread her wings again. My heart jumps into my throat and i feel the tears well in my eyes as place my forehead on my knees, my arms holding me tightly. I thought that all of it would have been okay if I found him, I thought that he would have fixed it and he did- he tried... we were just unlucky right? I couldn't blame him, I could only blame myself, blame myself for getting him in this messy situation, it was all my fault and because of me something horrible could happen to him, something ten times worse than what could happen to me.

A silent sobs escapes my body causing it to shudder with my uneven breathing. I didn't want him to see me like this, I wanted him to believe that I was strong, that I could handle whatever was going to happen but in reality was I strong? I was just a girl, one with a papered upbringing... I was not built for a place like this, was any Birch built for a place like this? What did mamma and papa think? Did they even know? Would they even care? The thought only causes me to cry harder, my silent sobs no longer that quiet as I cried away, as I cried my heart out, as I cried for myself, as I cried for Ragnar too.

It was all my fault. What have i done? Have i condoned someone I care about to a life of slavery or have i essentially killed him? Making my murder count increase to three?

"Ragnar," I breathe through a sob, finally brining my gaze up to me the boy who I have ruined. "Ragnar I am so sorry," I sob, my vision going blurry from tears, my face contorting my voice hiccuping. "Ragnar I am so so so sorry... This... This is all my fault.... Ragnar... Ragnar I- please, you never have to forgive me.... I am so sorry.... This is all my fault. sorry..." My words trail off as I break into an uncontrollable sob, my cries most likely being hear through out the cell block as I broke, as my walls fell down as I learnt hat I was weak, I was so very weak to be broken without even applying pressure. I would never be able to look him, anyone, in the eye again.

I tried. I really did. When Darcy came to me for help so long ago asking my aid in her situation there was no hesitation on my part. I did my best to help her whether it was taking the blame myself or covering up the evidence. Evidently nothing worked being as we're now in a cell together. It could be worse. We could have been separated into different cells or killed right away. They must want to interrogate one of us if we're still alive. Wouldn't shock me either if we got tortured. I say bring it on. The people here don't scare me. A little torture? So what. Let them try and hurt me or Darcy. I'm ready for a fight.

Now I'm hearing her apologize to me. There's no need for an apology from her. I chose on my own without any persuasion to help. Do I regret what I did in my attempt? Killing someone in order to protect the one I love? No I don't regret in the slightest. Hell I would kill in a heartbeat if It meant she could leave this place. She says I don't have to forgive her. Well there's nothing to forgive. So long as we're together, I will always be here for her. She'll just have to figure that out for herself in due time. "What's there to forgive? I wanted to help. I would kill to see you leave this place unharmed. Let them try and interrogate us. They'll regret stepping foot in this cell."

"What's there to forgive? I wanted to help. I would kill to see you leave this place unharmed. Let them try and interrogate us. They'll regret stepping foot in this cell."

Slowly I stop my crying, tears no longer forming in my dark eyes, my gaze slowly meeting the gaze of the boy in front of me. Trails of salt clung to my cheeks and my face was flushed a light red, stray hairs clinging to the salty paths. I look into Ragnar's deep blue eyes and I can racticall feel his words wrap themselves around me protectively filling me with a sense of security. His face didn't falter as he said the words, meaning that he meant it.

I sniffle slightly as I climb to my feet, my arms wrapping themselves around my body as I walk over to Ragnar and take a seat beside him. He was so warm, I think to myself as I lay my head against his arm, seeking comfort his warmth, from him being here. He says that there is nothing for him to forgive, meaning that it was not my fault that he was here. But how could be say that like he thought it was the truth? If it hadn't been for me we would still be home, still in district 2, not here. Ripred knows where we are now, locked away for how long? What was going to happen to us? To him? The though of someone torturing him made my body shudder and I curl my legs up closer to my body, almost so they touched my chest.

"Thank you," I breath quietly as I close my eyes, my heart thumping faster in my chest because of how close I was to Ragnar. I remember the first time I meet him, it had been such a bizarre experienced. He had run into me when I was at m worst, the fear of darkness aking over my body completly. I remember a few threats and his cold voice, one that would have been sure to scare me out of my whits had I of meet him when I was calm... but now? Now his cold voice, his harsh stare is something that is almost like home to me and I draw strength from it. It was a feeling that was foreign to me, but a feeling that I welcomed.

"Hey, do you think we could get out of here alive? Both of us- with all our body parts in tact?" I ask quietly, keeping my eyes shut because I was almost to scared to watch for his reaction. I hope we do, but that was hopeful thinking, I knew we wouldn't.

"Hey, do you think we could get out of here alive? Both of us- with all our body parts in tact?" Now that's an interesting question thrown my way. Do I honestly think that the peacekeepers would let us live after what we both did? Hell I killed one myself with no motive at all. Darcy? I don't recall her ever letting me know what she did. Must have been something on the level of my offense. She did have blood all over when she found me. Not her own either. Is she capable of killing someone? I look at her and find my answer. No. No she isn't. She is kind. The one person able to keep the light within me from completely disappearing. I still hold onto that small hope that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She's not capable of murder. I refuse to think of the alternative.

I turn to address Darcy eyes full of tears. "Only one person will be making it out of here alive." I want to say more, but I feel myself shutting down. I've given up on getting out of here alive. I know what'll happen to me once some guard shows up to take me away. As for Darcy? I will do what I can to make sure she gets out alive. I'll take all the blame if I have to. She will not be leaving this place in a body bag. Not if I can help it. "And that person will not be me either. It'll be you." I know what she'll think of my words. How horrified she'll be with me. How much she'll hate what I just told her. She doesn't understand how much I love her. I'd die for her. She can get angry with me all she wants, but the one thing I refuse to happen would be her death.

His words make my heart stop. His eyes staring into mine- no looking past them, looking into my soul and I fight back tears because haven't I cried enough? He couldn't mean that right? wasn't he meant to comfort me? Meant to tell me that we would both be fine? Isn't that what a normal person would do in a situation like this? I try to fight back the look of disbelief, but I cant. The tears stop falling and I just sit there, my mouth slightly agape. But then I remember that is is Ragnar, this is a cold hearted man who wanted nothing more than to kill when I first meet him. He was not going to be the type of person to sit here and tell me that everything was going to be okay, when it obviously wasn't.

After all, that wouldn't be Ragnar. The thought brings a smile onto my chapped, dry lips, And when I think about it I am glad, glad that he was not forming a protective cushion around me. I get ready to sit comfortably next to him again, my smile staying panted on my lips but then he speaks, his next words diving deeper into my heart than the words which had slipped past his lips only moments ago:

"And that person will not be me either. It'll be you."

I climb to my feet instantly, my eyes flashing with rage as I stare down at the boy that I have so quickly grown to care about. His words race through my mind of repeat, and I place my hands on my hips, my mouth pulled back in a snarl. How selfish could he be? How could be be able to make that decision!? did he not understand that I had killed someone as well? that I was in here because of my own doing? I open my mouth but words don't come, my jaw just moves as I look for the right words to start with, the right words to explain to him how stupid he was being.

"Rag-Ragnar-" his name gets tuck between my teeth and I take a moment to gather my thoughts, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath. "Ragnar you don't get to make that choice. Do you understand that I killed someone? That I should be the one not making it out of here, not you! You deserve a life! You deserve to be happy! please, please don't do this, please don't make my mistakes ruin you!"

I crouch down in front of him, my hands cold hands closing around his own as I held them tightly, feeling the warmth of his body flow into my making my heart pound a little bit faster. He didn't deserve this. This was my problem, and I would fix this. I would fix this so that he would get out of here with all that hair on his head. realeasing one of his hands I place a hand on his cheek, looking his eyes, "I'll fix this Ragnar, okay? I'll fix this."

I'm touched by her words. I am. Thing is I was never really happy with how I ran my own life back home. What she doesn't realize about me hell about us is she helped me find peace. The very peace I needed to finally begin to see the world for what It is. A lovely place to live and breathe. There is the usual games stuff but there's so much more to life than that. She helped me find the light within. If I'm fated to die then so be it. If my death can give her life than that's what'll happen. No peacekeeper will take her away for torture. I know that she killed someone. She says I deserve a life? Well its not her choice who lives and who dies. We both killed someone back home. Didn't they deserve life as well?

"Look Darcy. Some who die deserved to live. Some who live deserve to die. Can you honestly make that decision for me? If I'm ready to die that's my choice not yours. I love you Darcy. No one will be taking you away so long as I breathe." I take a deep breath and await more yelling from her. I know how she'll respond. I expect an earful from her, but this is my choice. To die protecting a love one is how I want to go. I don't want to die by some stranger hell bent on severing my limb from my head. That's for the careers who want to go in the games. No I want to die for a purpose. I've found that purpose. Protecting the woman I love. If she refuses to see that well tough luck. She can't stop me. I only wish we could have spent more time together. It feels like we only had a weeks worth of time to know each other. I'll miss her when I'm gone.

I freeze.

Three words, three words which I had not heard in years slip past his lips and fresh tears begin to build in my eyes.

I love you.

No one has said those words to me for as long as I cold remember. I knew that I was my families favourite but never did they say love, they always treated me like a trophy not an actual human begin. I remember when they used to say it to me, when they used to say it with warm eyes and a comforting hug but years have past and not once had those words ever made it past their walls. I dont even hear the rest of the words that slip past his lips, my mind hooked on those three words, three words which made me walls crumble and my heart break.

I love you.

And I loved him. I really did, the way he made me feel so safe, the way he cared and protected me was more than anyone had ever done for me- hell he would rather die then see me suffer visa versa so if that wasn't love then what was it.

I bring my free hand up so that I am cupping his face, and then place a gentle kiss on his cheek, before wrapping my arms around his neck and surrounding myself in his presence. I wanted to feel his arms wrap around my body, I wanted him to hold me tight, and I wanted to sit like that forever, both of us never having to face the peacekeepers, never having to pace the fate that waits us.

"I love you too, and no one will hurt you. I wont let them. I want to protect you, please let me protect you." I whisper, desperation laced with my words.
