You is always lonely.

But this body is never alone. The monster keeps me constant company. She wouldn't understand, and I don't want her to, as she rips hair from flesh. For the first time in days, I can feel it. The crinkle of the gown. The drip of the hot wax. The sheering as the cloth claims a little piece of me.

The monster does not like it.

After, I'm left shivering. Are you lonely?

The stylist escorts me to the Training Center. It's big and cold and sharp. Another tribute jostles me, rubbing against raw flesh. The monster demands that I ask him for sugar. But my jaw is melted shut, hot wax bonding lips to cheeks. I whimper. I know, because the sound stops in my melted mouth, but it doesn't sound like this body, it sounds like a cat trying to die but it can't because it's trapped between metal jaws but it can't be my jaw because it's melted shut and are you lonely?

I push apart the leaves, cocooned in the oasis of the Training Center. Overturned jars of paint surround me and I wonder if the plastic tree is trying to protect me.

The girl breaks my heart just to look at her.

Lips peel back from lips, taking a new form.

"Yes, I'm lonely."

Ellexias applied the rag to her forehead, sighing between exhausted breaths. The trainers were working her to death, and for good reason, but she requested a break to visit the other stations (and perhaps grab a refreshing snack from the table). Simply finding the proper grip on a short-range weapon was proving to be tedious, let alone striking a target with accuracy and balance. It was grueling but necessary. She didn’t truly know how far the skillset would take her – especially with District Six’s complex history, all having produced no results – yet she put forth the effort anyway, knowing it would only hurt worse if she didn’t try.

The corner of the training room littered with trees and artificial wildlife drew her eye. She was practicing fire-starting in her spare time, which was a crucial skill for survival in any given arena. That was common knowledge. So far it seemed she had mastered the technique, but a little more practice wouldn’t hurt. A snack could wait, after all.

She ended up next to the camouflage station. A girl was sitting by one of the trees, surrounded by paint spills and collapsed jars. She recognized her by her symptoms; after so many years of training it was hard to ignore a medical case when she spotted one.

”Yes, I’m lonely,” she said, as if speaking to nobody.

”Hey, how are you feeling?” Lexi replied, and she could feel the compassionate side of herself emerging at another inappropriate time. ”I’ve noticed your withdrawal symptoms.”

Not the best icebreaker, but it would suffice.

Trees. Actual living foliage in one corner of the training center. It was near the station where a large screen offered an electronic challenge for identifying poisonous and non-poisonous plants, and close by the array of real plants that tributes were allowed to work with. Katelyn had spent some time by those, hoping to find some familiarity. It was different from the orchards and the fields back home, but it was close enough to what she was used to that she felt she could make it work. It came naturally to her, and she found the presence of such things to be comforting.

From what she had seen, most of the others were content to hack away at each other at the combat stations,but the thought of joining those activities made her ill. Best to stick with what she was good at. Besides, how many other tributes would take the time to figure out the difference between an unripened tomato and horse nettle? After all, their fellow tributes were far from the only danger in the arena. Mutts, dehydration, poison; the gamemakers always made sure that everything was capable of killing someone.

Nearby at the camouflage station, Kate had seen a girl drifting in and out of the trees and knocking paint over. Strange, but maybe the other tribute was strategizing. A brunette walked up and started talking to her. Katelyn didn't mean to eavesdrop, but she overheard a few words. Withdrawal? Maybe the sitting girl was a morphling addict. It wasn't very common in district eleven; probably owing to the lack of money the majority of people would have available to spend on it.

Katelyn glanced at the other two girls and tried to place them. The one that offered help she was pretty sure was from district six. The other she wasn't sure about until she saw the number eight stitched into the uniform. Reasoning that six couldn't be all bad if she was concerned about another tribute's health, Katelyn decided that maybe, just maybe, she had found the good in this situation. Putting the tomato and the nettle down, Kate hesitatingly walked over to the pair, holding an elbow with her other hand."Excuse me, is there anything I could do to help?"

There are very few faces I recognize here. My own is the only one I can say that I really know, and even then it's not that much of a comfort. Perhaps the next best is Ellexias, though to say that I know her would be like saying I've seen President Snow. The man is someone who I have heard of, or have seen on television, but the closest I had ever gotten in real life was standing on that chariot while President Snow stood far above, looking down on us all. Ellexias was a lot more pleasant that than man, though, that was for sure. As for anyone else, well some names I knew and some I didn't. Mostly I didn't know anyone.

When I saw Ellexias standing with two other girls I immediately was drawn over to them. The sense of familiarity was a comfort, and besides they were all good looking. I came up so I stood behind the shoulder of the blonde girl. She was rather tall so I had to stand off to the side in order to see around her. I tried to catch Lexi's eye, hoping to be as unobtrusive as possible. "Excuse me, is there anything I could do to help?" My lips twitched. It was a bit of an odd question to ask, but I didn't know what the conversation had been so who was I to judge. The girl on the other side of Ellexias was really short, the shortest of the three girls, and looking like she wasn't all there. Perhaps that's what blondie meant.

"Who are these two, Lexi?" I smiled from where I stood, nodding to the blonde and the short one. "New friends?" I moved so I was more visible to all three of them. I did a mock bow, though it was mostly just a nod of the head and a small hand flourish, grinning. "Marchello Donner, good to meet you."

She's a do-gooder. She'll help you. Just ask.

"I've been better," I say, tucking my chin, lifting my eyelashes. That's how the scam starts, as a child, all innocent and full of need. Use my base nature to appeal to theirs. Easy. It's growing the scam that's a challenge, and I'd rather not have to work so hard, if she'll just give me what I need. But I've never had a mark as beautiful as she is, and I wonder if she knows it the way I know it. Beauty isn't a two way street

It's a s l i d i n g s c a l e and she's winning. I wonder what I could possibly offer her and the monster slips between my lungs and squeezes.

I wheeze. "Just a little thirsty." I think I have her. She's close, she's concerned, she's clean. She's almost perfect. I stretch, popping shoulder and knee joints, preparing this body for the spectacular inevitability.

But it's never that easy. There's not one but two human shaped obstacles. The monster is furious, roaring so loudly that I can't hear what the interlopers say. She or he might say

what a waste of space

you aren't even that far gone

I have a hook up.

She or he might have offered something better than Heartbreak girl, but I'll never know. I put my hands over my ears, shake my head, tell the monster to, "SHUT UP!"

Glass shatters. Wax drips. Heart beats. In my throat. The monster is a knife against my cartoid. This body is a hostage. "I could really use some h-" The knife bites. I wheeze. "Just a little h-"

We’ve all been better. She didn’t say it out loud. A withdrawal-ridden tribute’s pain was incomparable. She would be weaker when she entered the arena, perhaps dazed. An easy target for most, but Lexi didn’t want to think that way. Perhaps she could flee and hide among the arena’s landmarks to escape the harshness of the Bloodbath – or perhaps she would run straight into danger. Either way, the outcome wasn’t optimistic.

”I can get you a glass of water,” she replied, pivoting on her left foot in preparation to fetch what the girl’s system needed. A shadow of another person appeared then, a voice that offered extra help. She reminded Lexi of herself during her training days, when she would walk into every patient’s room and ask that same question. ”Would you mind bringing us a bottle of water?” she asked.

Somehow, Lexi’s genuine concern attracted a party. Marchello managed to sniff her out and appeared with questions, not that she was against answering them. They were practically destined to be allies now, after all. ”This is Velocity.” She gestured to the confused one, the one who made sudden exclamations that would worry the average citizen. The outburst didn’t faze Lexi, however. She had handled worse cases. ”I didn’t catch your name,” she said to the blondie.
