Velocity joined the brawl

All the fine tributes, and all her dear friends
Couldn’t put City back together again.

In the blackness, the monster pleads with me. At first, there aren’t any words, just the tug tug of the marionette strings. With every scattered x, his words become a little more distinct. I hear what is behind the words before they come into focus. Agony. Regret. Denial. You have to wake up, you have to –

I seize

onto the thought, the lifeline dragging me from deepest black to purest white. My eyelashes are a hot sticky mess while the rest of me is cooling to a sticky frozen mess. My fingers twitch with the inane need to brush the hair from my eyes, but I know better than to try. I know what I’ll find there. It is the edge of

nothing.

Ting-ting.

A tiny alarm sounds. Ting-ting. It’s so rhythmic and regular. It’s what my heart should be, instead of an overworked pump. Ting-ting. Such a charming little sound. I can almost ignore it, let myself slip over the edge into endless slumber except –

WAKE UP!

“I’m awake!” I grouse, and then realize it’s true. I really am awake, and the sky is really white, and I’m cocooned in gore. There’s bile at the back of my throat but nowhere for it to go. Nowhere for me to go. I recede, withdrawing from the bright white pain. But there's something warm next to me and not quite whole. “Elverum, is that you?” I whisper when I mean to yell. It's the yelliest whisper I can manage. I wrap fingers around his, squeeze tightly. Ting-ting.

Faces above me. I know they want me to get up, just like the monster wants me to go on, but I'm spent. I am

Gagging on bile as her stomach was completely emptied of the scant breakfast she had eaten in the training center, Katelyn was dimly aware of Marc placing a hand on her shaking shoulders and asking her how she was doing, but it was hard to focus on that when she could feel the blood drying on her hands and face, making her hair sticky and her skin cold. Not when Velocity's corpse was a foot away. How could Marc ask if she was alright?

Sure, the only wound she had suffered was a dark bruise on her leg, but she had killed someone. Not to mention wounding a few others. She baked pies, she cried internally, taking lives was something big stupid careers like Mason did, not her, never her. Memories of the conversation she had had with Mason floated back to her. She had told him that if she and her allies had to kill anyone, it would be out of survival, nothing more. Perhaps that held true. Three had punched her and Katelyn had reacted out of instinct.

Even so, she hadn't expected that she'd actually kill anyone, especially not in the bloodbath., and not so violently. But that girl that she had killed was already missing an arm and a foot when she killed her. Rationalizing that If anything, she probably put the poor dear out of her misery, Katelyn shuddered, trying to get a grip on her sobbing and became aware of a growing shadow. Looking up in time to see a giant ice cube coming towards her, but not in time to get out of the way, it smacked into her, knocking her off her feet and into the snow.

Rather than laying stunned on the ground, Katelyn popped back up with a gasp. The cube had left a dark bruise and some cuts that she could feel through her clothing, but otherwise she was okay. She stared at the offending thing as it cracked open and out tumbled a variety of items. Then she heard a voice, not Ellexias quietly asking a question they all knew the answer to, no what she heard was barely a whisper, but it carried. She squeaked in horror. Velocity was still alive? No, no, they had fired a canon for her, Katelyn had heard it as soon as her ally went down.

She wondered what exactly the Capitol's parameters for a canon was, but she figured in that instant that it signified when a killing blow was struck, even if the tribute managed to hang on for just a little while longer. And it wouldn't be much longer either, not with the dent in Velocity's head. Looking at it made her want to throw up again, but she didn't think she had anything left in her stomach. The sponsorship thing kept tinging at them, but Katelyn didn't think anything of it until Velocity whispered again.

"Kate, can you turn that thing off? I’m so tired…” Blinking rapidly to get the moisture out of her eyes, kate twisted the little box open and peered at its contents, which turned out to be a single sugar cube. She turned the container over and found that it was marked with an eight, so it had to be for the dying girl in front of her. But what was it for? It seemed like a sick joke. Maybe it made more sense to the capitolites watching. Not knowing what to do with it, Katelyn handed the little container to Lexi, figuring that if this was meant for Velocity's current condition, the girl from six might know what it was. "V-velocity..."she mumbled, frozen in motion not by the cold, but by virture of the fact that she had never been in this position before.

A shadow had fallen over the two of us, a literal one, and I looked up in time to see what was causing it. Lucky for me, I was still wired on adrenaline and managed to get free in time. "Here," came a small noise. I breathed a small sigh, but quickly went back into worrying as I realized that Kate wasn't where I had last seen her. Then I spotted her, laying for a moment in the snow, and noticed the broken ice all around her. She looked mostly okay, though, just cuts and maybe some new bruises, but damn it if that didn't scare me. The last thing we needed was to lose someone else. "Is that?" I looked for Lexi, watching out of the corner of my eye as Kate got up - she really was okay - and finally spotted her. She was shaking slightly - as though we all weren't - but otherwise looked fine. If anything, it looked like we all were going to lose our lunch. Then again, there had been no lunch so we didn't have anything to lose.

The sponsorship capsule fell near Velocity, tinging insistently and annoyingly. I wanted to smash it. What a fucking joke, sending us something. Unless it would help to fix Velocity's head there was no damn point. Even if it was for me, I didn't want it. "Kate, can you turn that thing off? I’m so tired…" I nearly groaned. I didn't know what I had hoped but I knew then that I had wanted her to be dead so she wouldn't be suffering. Maybe she was numb, but even then it must still be horrible. "V-velocity..." Kate had opened the capsule and passed the contents to Lexi, which was good because I couldn't do much but stare in horror as Velocity died slowly before my eyes. I moved to stand by her shoulder, placing a gentle hand against her cheek. I ignored the gore that circled her head like a bloody halo. I ignored the fact that she was dying. Carefully I leaned down and kissed her.

"I'm sorry," I whispered to her, remaining only a couple inches away. I owed her that. I hadn't protected her, I hadn't done anything. Hell, I hadn't even checked to see if she was okay before now. Damn me. We hadn't loved each other, but we had spent time together, we had forged a connection in our minds and with our bodies, we had put our trust in one another. And now I had let her die. "I'm sorry." I hoped she could understand all that I meant because I couldn't say it all. I kissed her forehead and stepped back so that Lexi and Kate could come forward. I sat in the snow, shoulders hunched as I stared at the crimson flower that had bloomed around City's head.

It would wilt soon, just like she would.

"Look outside dad. The b i r d s are here."

Her stomach curled. It was a horrific freak accident, Velocity splayed in the snow with head trauma forming a pool of blood beneath her hair. It seeped into the snow like ink, painting a patch of red to mark her grave. Ellexias couldn’t see where the crack in her skull had formed, but she didn’t want to. She didn’t want to see the blood pouring out, perhaps the chips of exposed bone. It was a miracle she was still breathing, let alone capable of acknowledging their presence. The light in her eyes was fading like a sunset’s glow. The contrast of peach skin and white snow erased evidence of her paling cheeks, but Lexi knew what the drainage would cause. She would be breathless and exhausted. Tunnel vision would merge her with oblivion. Her heart would fail. Velocity Rush would end.

Ellexias wasn’t frozen by ice. It was something unfathomably broken that kept her grounded in one patch of snow, like there were shards of a glass heart wedged between her veins. If she moved, it would sting. She might be torn to pieces. This was unlike any experiment subject's death; this was a name and face she grew to care for, a life she had sworn to protect. Since first laying eyes on her and her symptoms, her motherly instincts had bloomed. Eventually she had reached out to her in the training center, taking note of her strange reactions. It was thanks to this chance encounter that she had met Katelyn. Safety in numbers, they said. Sanity shared between those who would slowly lose it. Without Velocity, would it just be her and Marchello? Would that have been enough?

A robotic song alerted them to the dreary sky. A capsule with a parachute tweeted at them, bearing the number “eight.” There was nothing inside that could reverse Velocity’s condition. Lexi almost looked away from it, but as Katelyn explored its contents she pulled out a sugar cube and handed it to her. As far as she was concerned, a sugar cube was just a sugar cube, but the Capitol was known for its tricks and technology. This was something else entirely, and her brain shifted gears in order to make sense of it.

”Medicine, maybe,” she whispered, mostly to herself. Inhaling, she knelt beside Velocity’s withering body and pressed the cube to her lips. ”For your troubles,” she said, allowing her to consume it as she pleased. Then she smoothed the hair away from Velocity’s forehead and waited for her to die.

"I could never leave you," I murmur, my voice barely more than a breath. The crackling turns to crystals in the sky and I realize the final truth: the monster is me. The yearning, the needing, the pushing, the pleading. It's been me all along. This body, this mind, this failing heart. It's all mine, Velocity Rush.

One hand to stomach, one hand to heart. Every beat of my heart an x, every expansion of my lungs a y.
