This wasn’t like the fight they had had the previous day. There was no need for talking, no one telling her to shut up. Just a frantic, adrenaline fueled nightmare that was all claws and teeth and blood. A string of curses erupted from Marc’s mouth as he tried and failed to damage one of the mutts because it put up a paw and batted the axe away, effectively blocking the hit. Lexi, n the other hand, managed to slice its leg, as the pair lunged at eight; the boy stopped one blow, but it only opened him up to receive a claw to his leg. That appeared to be as much as he was willing to take, because rather than stay fighting, he turned tail and fled right after. Not a bad idea.

She turned to her allies, daring to take her eyes off of the mutts for a few scant seconds and saw that Lexi was already helping Marc up, so Katelyn dashed over to the dead mutt instead and quickly yanked her axes out; aware of the muttations large soulless eyes watching their every move. Staring at the dead one, she saw the glint of gold again and realized there was an egg of some kind by its carcass. But cats didn’t lay eggs; well, perhaps these mutts did, but she was pretty sure they didn’t. Plus it looked almost metallic. Kate picked it up and turned it around as she retreated towards her allies. It was very smooth, unblemished except for a hole that looked strikingly familiar.

With a jolt, she realized that it was close to that little key thing she had found at the bloodbath. The game makers must have intended for someone to find both. For good or ill, remained to be seen, but Katelyn figured that if the gamemakers wanted something, it was probably safer to give it to them. Once she was confident that the remaining mutts were more interested in sniffing at the dead one, and that Lexi had a good grip on Marc, she pulled her can of tuna out and stuck it in Lexi’s bag so she had room for the egg, and proceeded to jog away from the battle. Hopefully somewhere safer, or at least as safe as a place in the arena could be. But she had only taken a few steps when she felt suddenly woozy. Sick to her stomach. She chalked it up to the lack of food;sure, she had gone a day or two without a substantial meal back home, but not on top of fighting for her life. That had to be it. Maybe she'd need Lexi to look her over, or finally crack open that can.

As I swiped at the giant cat it brought a paw up and my blade clanged off of its claws. I gaped, waiting for the pain to slice across my flesh, but all that happened was I fell backwards. There was a growl from the cat and then both beasts had moved away, charging towards Velocity's district partner. Before I could call out a warning, I watched as he blocked one cat's attack and was hit hard by the other. Apparently these mutts had a thing for damaging legs, because they tore him in a very similar manner to the first injury they had given me. I looked at my left hand with its two missing fingers and sighed. If anything I was exasperated. I had lost a leg, and now these damn cats had decided to take another piece of me away. Would there be any of me left by the end of this?

The boy ran as soon as he was able, limping slightly from his injury but moving fast enough that the remaining cats didn't follow. It was a good idea. I didn't want to stay here any longer lest I was turned into chow. A hand once again was extended to me and this time I looking into the face of my helper. Lexi looked at me with concern, which only grew worse as I gave her the hand with the missing fingers. She helped me up and I looked around to see what had happened to Kate. She was kneeling by the body of the largest cat - the one she had dispatched with an ease and a ruthlessness that had scared me - digging into its fur to extract the cause of the golden flash I had seen when this all started.

I didn't see what it was, she moved too quickly with it, but as she left the carcass behind I had a sudden moment of inspiration. Drawing one of my hatchets from my belt, I kneeled down my the great dead beast. It was a little messy, but I eventually managed to skin the thing. I felt a little lightheaded so I stayed low for a bit, but once I had used the hatchet to scrape as much of the blood and guts off of the skin as possible I threw it over my shoulders. I placed the head over my own like a hood before folding the front paws into a knot in front of my chest. I had wanted to be a lion, and maybe this would make me at least look a little fierce. I knew I hadn't killed it - Kate had, there was no argument about it - but I was the one who would be able to skin it and wear it. Kate was a little too kindhearted for that.

Lexi was waiting to help me up again and to aid me in getting away. With my remaining leg bleeding badly again and my right hip being very sore I couldn't even pretend I wasn't extremely grateful for her help. I spotted the boy a ways off and thought he looked a little off. In fact, we all did. I knew in my bag I had something for poison and so I grabbed the box with the needle in it. "Hey bud, use this." I tossed it to him underhand, knowing my aim would still be fair even right now. I had managed to break the one girl's jaw even when I could barely stand, so I should be able to lightly toss a box to a boy as I was now. Sure enough, it came pretty close. My hands passed over the rose and I pulled it out. Thinking to offer it to Lexi, I showed it to her. "You think this is special in any way?" Perhaps i should have asked Kate that - she was from District eleven and should have an extensive knowledge of plants - but with Lexi being a nurse and right at my side I thought it may as well be her.

I put the rose under my nose and too a whiff, though there wasn't much of a smell to it. An odd flower, to be sure, but it had to be something useful. Even if it wasn't, I could always give it to Lexi. Girls like flowers, don't they?

Her efforts felt wasted. She was a whirlwind of scratches, but they were shallow and dull in comparison to the split in her calf. Her damage wasn’t a hindrance to their agility and strength. They were still very capable killers, and the carcass of their dearly departed didn’t serve as a distraction, only as hope for her alliance’s victory. It was scarce hope, scraped from the bottom of her frozen conscience like the ice chips lodged in the soles of her boots. Their follower – the boy from eight – was making an escape while he could, his thigh stained red from the hunt. She had nearly forgotten how vast this castle was. Surely there were plenty of escape routes and rooms to take refuge in. The boy was wise. He slipped away practically unnoticed.

Ellexias wanted to hold their ground. There were three of them, they couldn’t flee without the beasts pursuing their blood trails. They couldn’t make themselves invisible. Yet the beasts seemed to be losing interest, circling instead of sprinting, muscles relaxed instead of wound up. She didn’t take her eyes off of them as she returned to Marchello, who would need her assistance to make a speedy run out of here. Perhaps they could explore the corridors of this mysterious structure, and pray to fate itself that the roof didn’t cave in above their heads. Anything to avoid this unnecessary battle. If the creatures were finished, they were finished. There was no need to provoke them further.

It was a relief Marchello didn’t protest against her assistance. Now was not the time to squabble over pride or stubbornness. He needed her help, as tedious as it was. Fortunately, once he was up he could walk fairly decently on his own. Slowly, but it was better than nothing. She was grateful to whomever had decided to donate the wooden cane, be it a Capitolite or an old victor. She didn’t care who, she just wanted to thank them. Somebody was watching over him, somebody other than Ellexias. As much as it felt like an isolated battle, they weren’t alone. Not truly.

Marchello pulled out the rose they had received at the shrine of their ‘beloved’ president. ”You think this is special in any way?” She had nearly forgotten about it. It seemed like a mockery of some sort, a worthless “gift” for their offerings to the shrine. She had thought little of it, having nearly scoffed when Marchello scooped it up. ”Proabably not,” she muttered. If there were any secrets to this little flower, it was probably something deadly. Poison, perhaps. He sniffed it regardless, and she wanted to sigh. Fortunately, she remembered the syringes packed away in their bags. A cure for toxins, and a relief for the burning in her leg. Hopefully.
