Choose Battles Wisely
Most find this odd, but I actually enjoy attending school. Okay and by most, I mean my moms. They're sort of the only two that'd know a fact like that, or anything about me for that matter. Which is the exact reason why I'm content with going to the place of education on a daily. If I didn't, my life would revolve around my moms even more so. A little freedom is needed for a boy of my age, and there's no denying my crave for knowledge. Now if only I was just as skilled in the social aspects, because my after classes routine contains nothing but a stroll home.
Every day I watch as group of kids collect along the outskirts of the large building they warehouse us in. Of course I'm one of the few stragglers that roam around solo. It's been this way since my moms stopped dropping me off and picking me up, and there's not much I can do about it. Making friends is just not a talent of mine, no matter how hard they attempt to install it me. I observe the crowd while relaxing under a heavily shaded tree, waiting for them to settle before I depart.
Today it's especially nice out, though I probably think that too frequently for it hold any meaning. Can't help appreciating the times that are peaceful, when complaints aren't heard, and drama's no where to be seen. I head off down a longer path, to absorb in as much as this calmness as I can. If only I knew my direction doesn't lead down harmonious route.
Instinctively I make a point to avoid the group of boys I spot ahead of me. There's no telling the friendlies from dangerous, and I simply prefer to bypass them all. Better save then sorry, right? I step off the dirt trail to keep my distances, only to cause the attention I was trying to escape. "Hey shorty! What you doing in the trees?" A voice calls out for me, with a pitch I'd rather not hear. It sounds like he's ready to play a cruel game, one that I'd rather not participate in. Intelligently, I attempt at ignoring them, while picking up my speed a tad to get further away. Does this work? If only I were that lucky.
"Where you going pretty boy?" The same guy questions with that identical humorous tone.
"Home." I answer blankly, unintimidated. Sure my heart might be pounding a bit more then usual, but it's nothing I haven't faced before. Hopefully these kids realize I'm not worthy, and decide to go hazel someone else. "I don't have any lunch money." Comes muttering from my mouth, probably not the smartest move...but I've seem to of lost my filter. My back gets pressed against a tree as they approach closer, not interested in departing just yet. Great, this should be fun.
