when you never thought that it could ever get this tough,of District Ten
that's when you feel my kind of love
The morning of the Bloodbath they took their customary, required place in front of the television in the District Ten suite. Sometimes Mace would watch with Julian in the command central that was District Two's viewing area. But this year Julian had more than his hands full with four tributes. Mace wouldn't be missed. He dropped the children off at the creche and walked back through an oddly deserted Training Center to the elevator. It was with a deep and profound sense of relief that when he returned to their suite, the only sound was the hum of the television. He could almost muster up gratitude that circumstances had scattered his family. For a tiny piece of time, it would just be two adults who didn't have to speak to one another to know.
He took his time approaching the couch where Saffron sat. He could be grateful for the company, but he could find no gratitude for what they were forced to do. "Did I miss anything?" He touched the back of her head gently. His gaze flickered to the screen, enough to see the string of names marching across the bottom, and then away. If the worst had happened, he would rather hear it from Saffron than Caesar or whatever idiot was blathering about the Bloodbath this year.
With rough but careful hands, he lifted the length of her strawberry blonde hair. He divided it loosely into three sections, working them across each other as he spoke. "I ain't even as worried as I should be. Maybe I'm getting too old, but I just ain't scared the way I used to be. I should be for Abel and Simon. But I just couldn't figure out how to be this mornin' and now it's nearly over. Right? Is it almost over?" The shallow light of the television screen played over his face even as he looked down to Saffron Lowe.
He reached the end of her hair and realized he'd forgotten the most important part: an elastic. He huffed. "Juliet ain't never going to stand for that."
