Preston march garrity
i know it's dire, my time today
Only when we reach the entrance do we slow down. Asher's got my knives ready to toss and I try to hold the sword in an offensive position but the tip keeps dipping as my injuries drain my energy. I needed to rest soon. As Asher peers into the shadows, I turn to watch behind us. Nothing, no one, not a single rustle. At least not on the ground.
Ting ting ting
I had barely heard it for more than a few seconds and it already was annoying. The high pitched bell peeled out into the open air and for a moment I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Then my eyes locked on the shapes of two backpacks drifting down with the help of parachutes.
I'm standing below them before they touch the ground. The one labeled with a little 4 is in my hands and opened in a heartbeat, parachute tossed aside as I check what could possibly be inside. A jug meets my questing fingers, then some sort of plastic kit. I pull the kit out, beaming as the red plus sign greets me. Without hesitation, I crack it open and extract the contents. It was a good thing I had taken time at the First Aid station, for it might just save my life.
The needle pinches and I suck in a breath. With only a single hand to work with I had chosen to stitch up my thigh as it would be easier to deal with. My chest could be wrapped with bandages, and my hand well... I guess I would just have to do my best. What little I could do did help me feel more focused, and hopefully it would save me from bleeding to death. Of course, I could still die at any moment.
It was time to get to shelter.
In the gloom and shadows of the factory it was cooler. The darkness didn't frighten me, only what it might conceal. If we were set upon by a group of tributes we wouldn't be able to see them until it was too late. The entire building was quiet, though, still like it hadn't seen life in a hundred years - or at least seventy. Neither Asher nor I felt comfortable setting up in the open, so we hid in the shadow of a large machine. Together we might be able to last at least tonight, and maybe longer if we can keep away from the other groups. Having lost sight of Gunner - a twinge not related to my injuries sprang up in my gut - we only had each other. At least the Capitol seemed to like us, or pity us. Either way, we may not be as badly off as I thought we would be.
My eyes drop like stones and my eyelids follow. Next is my head and suddenly I'm asleep with my head pillowed on my backpack. Asher is still beside me, I can feel the faint heat from him, and I feel a momentary sense of peace. The stillness of this place is a comfort.
