It's hard to imagine that salt could be thrown around so fucking easily by the furious wind; it's hard to imagine where the salt came from at all. Not from the ocean, that's for sure. The grim thought lingers, and Nat wrinkles his nose where his face is protected by the roll of his shirt.

The thought of his shirt brings a pink tint to his cheeks as he recalls Gunner doing much the same as he's doing now. The only district four female is shameless - but Nat thinks that maybe he's getting used to that - and them.

He needs the time to sort out his head, anyway. Think through the idea that he's kind of stupidly head over heels for Circe, that a small percentage of him is attracted to Orion, that Gunner - despite her blatant woman parts - is her own sexually confusing creature. Then again, I probably shouldn't be too surprised with that last one.

He's not... in love with them. No, being in love would probably be something a whole lot different than this. Love would be Circe's grief as Elya burned - or so he thinks. It would be Leon and Finn on the couch, fingers linked as they exchange words breathed onto each other's skin.

What they have is nothing like love. At least, not the sort of love that involves romancing and flowers and all of the things that he sees happening every year in the spring with one person with their significant other. It's not like what he shared with Kirito: meaningless words thrown experimentally between them both. It's... different. It's not familial, either - Nat's very well acquainted with that version of it.

The plushie still tucked carefully into his backpack is a burning image to his mind's eye, tinted red like that specific shade of wounded pride.

No, it's not like that with the other three.

But he likes it.

Likes what they're sharing between them, that sense of not-family but not-friends either. There were no significant others between them, just... them. Some kind of twisted sense of affection evident even as Gunner wriggles her eyebrows at Nat - or when she has him in a headlock that a single twist could snap his neck in, smothering him in soggy kisses.

Gunner, even at her most dangerous, is lovable to him.

The thought causes him to snatch at the tail-feathers of a passing bird, and Nat stops, staring after it with wide eyes and a smile.

He likes this best.

He has to focus on the better thoughts. The better things.

Even as he fights for his life, even as the echo of cannons rings in the cavern of his memory ear, the more time passes the more he realizes that he's never going to get out of here. Not if Elya can't. Not if it means Circe, Orion, Gunner can't.

But more than that... he's coming to realize that he doesn't want to leave.

And thoughts about the others were certainly better than thoughts of Glamour Kinkade, his words like a festering wound to his memory. I'll spend every penny on your brother's pleasure. There's no name for the sick feeling that hits Nat in his empty stomach, or the taste of bitterness on his tongue.

He's playing with Glamour a game he's bound to lose, and the thought leaves him dizzy with an unnameable fear.

"Asshole Gamemaker," he mutters under his breath, trying to regain his focus. Finn will hurt you. For a moment Nat allows himself to picture it: Finn striking Glamour Kinkade across the jaw, and his lips twitch. Yeah, I think Finn could take you.
