ASHER RAINER

From the time he ran away from the battlefield, he kept going despite his body begging him to lay down and sleep. Exhaustion crept through his body. Sweat was no longer an option as the world spun around him, yet he kept moving trying his best to keep up with the younger boy. Preston was his ally, his friend, and at the same time his enemy, yet thinking about it was almost painful. It wasn't the worse of his thoughts, though. All he could think about was the never ending thirst. It grew stronger and stronger with each passing second, but the idea of spending the night close to the battlefield left him weary as it forced adrenaline along with the will to survive throughout his entire body.
"I think we should be safe here; I'm pretty sure that the boys from six and seven will leave us alone now." It was a good thought. The duo helped them destroy the massive beast of a cornucopia, yet they were almost untouched. The other two lost two people - all he could see was the lifeless bodies falling to the ground as the cornucopia removed the giant blades leaving gaping holes - the boy from eight, and the girl from nine. They were among the six cannons that sounded throughout the day. Asher was one step closer to returning to his family. One step closer to becoming the victor of the hunger games, but right now the final trophy was still so far away.
Collapsing to the ground, Asher kept his back to the tracks. His mind raced as the night slowly came into view. As the light turned to darkness. The thirst was becoming overwhelming. Specs of death flashed before his eyes. The world moved beneath him, and all he wanted to do was fly into the door in front of him. All his worries in the world would fly away, but dying wasn't on his to do list. Keeping his eyes towards the ground, he forced himself to focus on the small things of life. His breathing. It grew weaker and weaker, yet his lungs kept going. His brain kept telling them to breath. To expand just like his quivering heart refused to cease.
Ding. Ding. Ding.
It was a sound he remembered. A sound he cared so much about. A sound that signalled a sponsor sent him something. Frantically he looked around trying to figure out what to do. Where it was coming from. Who it was for. Reaching towards the parachute that landed a few feet away from him, he saw his name, Asher Rainer D7, printed neatly on a tiny sheet of paper; his heart sank deep into his stomach as a small smile spread across his face splitting his chapped lips. Yet all he could do was sit and stare at it wondering what was possibly inside. Hopefully it was water. That's all he wanted at this moment. A glass of water. Something to quench the never ending thirst.
With shakey hands, he opened the canister, and what he saw inside brougth a new meaning to the game. A full jug of water. Not just an empty bottle that he somehow received the other day, but a full one. Running his tongue along bloody lips, he stared at the clear liquid inside. The will to survive turned towards the sky climbing back up the ladder. Death wouldn't claim him as his own tonight. At least, he hoped. Removing his backpack from his shoulders, Asher dug inside looking for his firewood. Once he found it, he started a fire with what little bit he could. The flame grew larger and larger with each passing second. Once it was hot enough, he placed the jug on the fire to boil the precious contents inside.
After it boiled, he placed the jug off the fire before offering Preston a chance to boil his own. Whether or not he took it was up to him because Asher took his jug and sat down facing away. "I'll keep an eye out tonight- I mean there's no way I can sleep right now." Turning towards him, he wondered what he was up to. The two of them had survived three days of hell. They were going strong despite the amount of damage Preston took over the last few days. Bandages covered his body. And as Asher looked at himself he couldn't help but feel bad. A promise to protect the kid was taking a toll on him. How much longer could he keep him alive? How much longer could they stay together?
"Alright. Sounds good to me."
Picking up his jug of water he moved away leaving the younger boy to his thoughts. Slowly and carefully he removed the cap from the jug and pressed the tip to his lips before turning the bottom of the jug towards the air allowing every drop to flow through his teeth and over his tongue before falling down his throat into the pits of a stomach. It was refreshing to taste something so wonderful. He knew the he wouldn't ever take water for granted as long as he lived because it was precious. It was needed, and now he was capable of surviving.
Forcing himself into a comfortable distance he stared into the sky watching the six faces fly across the arena.
Just fifteen more. Then I can go home.

A slight rub on the shoulder from the younger boy brought Asher to reality. Stretching his arms, he forced himself into a seated position. Compared to how he was feeling just a few hours ago, a totally new feeling swept through his body. One of relief. One know that he was alive. One that could keep him going. Slowly he replaced all his items back inside his bag. The empty water jug was something that he now held close to him. Someone was kind. Someone cared. Someone didn't want him to die.
"You ready?"
"Yeah."
He shifted his gaze towards the tracks remembering what he had done just days before after the bloodbath as the crazy train rolled through the arena. He stood there beside him. Just knowing that Preston had his back if something bad happened was a nice thought. Standing there in silence was nice. Just for a moment he could forget about the world behind him. He could forget about the pain lingering behind an invisible mask pressed against his face. It was time for him to grow up. To become the man he needed to be. Asher needed to grow strong enough to survive. To become the victor.
Suddenly a deafening sound ripped through the air as the train sped towards them. Swallowing hard, Asher prepared to jump. He prepared himself to launch himself in the direction of a moving train. First Preston jumped onto the train and into the car, and Asher quickly followed behind trying to keep up, and he lunged towards the door barely managing to stay upon his feet. But as he looked around Preston had his rapier out. Quickly drawing out a knife, he stopped and listened as the sound of something grew closer and closer. "Really? Again?" Apparently a break was far away. A chance for down time. A chance to regroup.
Soon enough, Asher released a knife repeating what he had done for the last three day days.
They had become a record player stuck on repeat.
