I have never known anything but this. Clenched fists and jaw, flesh turned to steel, fire in my chest. Drenched in sweat with a hammer for a heart, I feel nothing but strength and willpower, every fiber of my body driving me to the crown that dangles over my head - over all of our heads.

Nova must want this as badly as I do. We are all here for the same reason: the glory of victory. There may be reasons behind the big golden picture, but aren't we all just selfish careers looking for a new trophy to add to their collection.

There is no shame in that, not to me. I have always been selfish. I have always wanted more for myself. I have always hungered for approval from parents who sigh at my tattoos and narrow their eyes at my sputtering excuses for the bottles beneath my bed.

So much drives me to do the things I do. My thoughts are often muddled with dilemmas and new lies to feed to my parents. But in this moment, my head is clear and bears a single thought: beat Nova.

And my fist follows through.

The dawn of a new battle rose with a promising new opponent, a career as worthy as the last. The hair tinged with rust was hard to forget, but Nova was never one to analyze somebody else's fight. She hardly remembered it, instead focusing on the feelings her own fight had brought. A thrill from adrenaline was never enough; anyone could trigger a rush by standing on the edge of a bridge, or sprinting across the District as a component of a workout regimen. A real fight was different. The pain was not inflicted by one's own body, but by an outside control. It was more than an adrenaline rush.

Not as addicting to the average nancy. Who was an addict to pain? The ones who couldn't feel anything else.

That house was empty and full of death. Their pain was laced with excess fear, and after her first victory, Nova had never slept better in that wretched place. So will full force, she brushed off the redhead's first punch and tossed one of her own.

Nova's fist collides with my flesh, an impact that leaves behind throbbing and a rush of blood. Our punches, in short, were weak and did not so much as send us staggering backward. I feel pathetic after putting so much might behind a punch that leaves no trail of purple and blue.

"It's such a shame that I'll have to ruin your pretty face," the words slip out of my mouth in a caustic growl after her fist collides with my skin. "If you want to keep it, hit better next time."

(As if my punch was better.)

The creature I become in combat does not bestow mercy, let alone speak kind words. Hissing between gritted teeth and firing flames at my opponent is second nature. Within the ring, I am supposed to be unstoppable, a leopard of stone with daggers for claws. (Though my faint punch states otherwise.)

And I should start acting like it.

It tickled. Their rush of fists might as well have been gentle caresses of the face, like they were lovers beneath romantic moonlight. The credit was due solely to their speed. The swings were not weak, she could sense the power behind both. It was their feather-light bodies allowing them to evade like they were dodging bullets. Every hit mattered, after all. One good sock to the face and her head could spin around. A head filled with painful static couldn't aim or concentrate, so it was in their best interest to favor a brush of knuckles.

Contrary to her previous fight, her opponent was actually speaking to her. A taunt, of course."It's okay, I don't need a pretty face to survive," she said, channeling tension into her leg. "Do you?"

She split the air in half and hoped for the best.
