This morning felt like any other, I rolled out of bed at the usual time, my brothers out before me…as usual. However it’s not a usual day, it’s games day. I’ve been dreading today, I couldn’t sleep but something must’ve sent me into dreamland last night. I don’t want any of my brother’s names to be pulled from that ball, none of us deserve it.

Standing in the square has always been painful, this is my third reaping and I still haven’t grown used to it. My brothers are at the other side of the crowd. It’s impossible for any of us to be picked; there are only three of us and so many District Ten boys.

The girl Leticia Tibideaux I’ve never heard of her but I feel sad, anyone who is thrown into that arena doesn’t deserve it.

Rodrick Benstaloe.

No, not him, if it was going to be any of us, it shouldn’t have been him. I can’t volunteer for him; I’ll die but Rodney, Rodney needs to save him. No, I can’t be left with Rodney.

Trying to persuade the peacekeepers allow me to see Rodrick alone was hard, we were meant to go as a family but thankfully I was allocated five minutes with him. Entering the room, I’d run up to him, offering him a hug. ”Ya’ve to come back Rodrick.” I need to tell him, I need to tell him the burning truth that has been lingering inside me for so long. ”I need to tell ya something…”

My dreams are supposed to be happy ones, not scary ones. The man said he'd protect me, and he would make sure nothing bad happened to me, no matter the circumstances. Rodney said he'd protect me too. Dreams aren't supposed to turn into nightmares, not as bad as this at least! I wish I could start a new dream. I want to wake up, and then fall right back asleep to go down a different path of pleasant, sweet dreams that my mother wished for me to have every night. Now I know why.

My parents come in, tears sliding down their face as if it was a waterfall. They don't say anything as I blankly stare at them. In two minutes time, I receive a goodbye hug from them both and watch them sniffle their way out the door. Then Rodney comes, and he only has words of encouragement. He tells me to be violent and do what I need to do to survive. It's probably easier said than done, Rodney.

Last and probably least, is my little brother Rory. I don't understand why they didn't all just come in together, it would've been much easier. He runs up to me and hugs me, and I wrap my arms around him like he's the only thing keeping me from falling into the void. You've to come back, Rodrick. I can try, but I don't control what happens in my dreams, kiddo. I need to tell you something... his voice sounds anxious, which intrigues me to ask.

"Whaddya mean? If it's another I love you, Daddy already said you did," I say. I don't care if he tells me he loves me. He doesn't compare to Rodney. He's just like Mama and Daddy. I have to say I love them, but I love Rodney with every inch of my body.

Standing in the justice building right now, is probably the hardest moment I have ever lived through. One of my brothers, being torn away from the family; for what? We’re meant to be a happy family, we’re meant to stick together through thick and thin, not to be separated by the Capitol. We’re different, we don’t deserve this, none of us did anything wrong. Especially Rodrick, it shouldn’t have been him, it should have been Rodney. It’s Rodney’s fault, all of it. He caused this and now I am going to be stuck with him. Rodrick needs to come back; he needs to snap back into reality.

”Ya ya, I know ya know a love ya." Trailing down my face as I spoke, I’d try to fight back the tears but it was hard. The salty army just marched down my cheeks as I focus on my words. “It aint a dream, none of this is.” Its Rodney who’s done it, he has messed about with Rodrick’s head. He’s been grooming him and Rodrick needs to know. He’ll have a better chance at surviving if he knows none of this is all fantasy.

Placing my hands onto Rodrick’s shoulders, I’d put my face into his, the tears still staining my cheeks.”It’s all real. Ya got ta fight properly. Ya need to come back. It’s Rodney, he’s been lyng to ya. Please understand that this is all real…” I’d pause my own words as reality struck me too. ”Ya could really die if ya don’t listen.”

I listen to my brother’s heavy accent, trying not to look at the tears that flow gently down his face. The white in his eyes have now been plagued with a pink, almost red, color. My dreams have been emotional today, but I have yet to let a single tear fall from my eyes. It’s hard to cope with the feeling that this could be your end. It’s difficult to know that you could start a whole new dream. One solitary inhale and then a sole exhale, and then, I’d be back into a new dream with a new path to choose.

Perhaps I could continue this route of my dream. If I have more potential than I’ve assumed, I could really continue to play through this story I’ve been living in for years. Perhaps that’s what Rory is trying to tell me, he’s going to give me the advice that a little kid would think is game changing, but really, it’s not going to do anything in the marathon known as the Hunger Games.

I listen to Rory’s advice, but instead it’s his concern for me. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that tone come out of his mouth. It has more emotion in it than Rodney when he gave me one last goodbye. Rory is trying to tell me that my brother, the only person that truly cares for my well-being, has been taking advantage of me. I could really die? Typical dreams. The figments in my dreams are trying to convince me that I’m not dreaming, and they are also trying to make this dream more of a nightmare. I am not menaced by it. I’m dreaming, and if I die I’ll wake up for a split second and then begin a new journey. When you dream, every end has a new beginning.

”Don’t be an idiot. This is the most idiotic conversation I’ve ever heard, and you’ve said a lot of bullshit,” I disagree with him. Why did I have to end up with Rory as a brother?

Everything wrong with this family is down to Rodney. He took advantage of Rodrick’s accident and now he’s on the road the death. I need to try and push him out of it, snap him out of this fantasy world that Rodney has created around him. The Capitol will not be Rodrick’s murderer if he dies, Rodney will. And if I don’t help Rodrick now, I’ll have his blood on my hands too. I know it will be hard for him to check back into reality but I must try. I need to fix the mess Rodney has caused all these years.

Burning my cheeks, I know a collection of emotions are taking over my mind and I need to show them to Rodrick, he needs to know I am being serious. Stained in sweat and tears, I can imagine that I look like a mess to him.

His words shatter my brain, the fragments of glass finding its way into my heart. HE NEEDS TO LISTEN , HE MUST.Sending my hand towards his cheek, I’d slap Rodrick across the face. My hand sending a burning sensation up my arm, as it triggers more fury inside of me. “If ya don’t ya will die.” My voice raise, as my face would be Rodricks. “Ya are the idiot and if ya are not going to listen, then there is no hope for ya.” Gritting my teeth, I’d fight back the urge to slap Rodrick again, my whole body trying its best to knock some sense into my older brother. “Rodney has been twisting ya mind, this is all real life and ya will die.” Repeating the word die sends chills through my body.The thought of my brother coming home in a box, while Rodney still as air in his lunges sends me crazy.
