The justice building is going, going gone as I step onto the train. I thought it would be awful to leave my family, and it was harder than I thought. I tried to be strong, to hold back the tears, but my eyes had sprung a leak back in the Justice Building, when I was trapped behind those large oak doors. I thought as they lead me out, for one second, that I was free, that there had been a mistake, that there was some rule this year that meant I couldn't have volunteered, that the girl that was reaped was to take her spot again, but no that wasn't the case, and I cursed myself for even hoping that someone would take my place to die. I helped save a life, and that was all that mattered.

As I enter the train I feel as Lily must have felt, amazed at what she saw, wide eyes looking around at the impressive structure. After I was shown to my room, the same room Lily must have had on the way to the Capitol, I walked to the cafeteria like area where I hoped to meet my district partner for the first time. I sat down at the table with the sweetest chocolate chip muffin I had ever had, and a glass of what seemed to be some sort of sweet juice. The lable classified it as "Lemonade." It was the best thing I had ever drank. I sipped it and felt like a little girl sipping out of a juice cup, which I suppose I was. After a while, my ears perked up to the sound of the door opening, and I looked up from my lemonade, hoping it was my district partner.

A lover’s plea falling on deaf ears struck me silent past the retort that I was not one for promises.

Not even for Imogen Tarver.

And I suppose that was the strangest part of it all, for I expected a lover’s hip to redefine the curve of my own; to change the nature of my existence until it was drastically different. I suppose I picked away at this principle as I watched my brother and his lover, two halves to a whole and they still seemed to be missing something of a secondary nature. I had been vocal about this assumption, stating the simple problems I recognized as I saw fit. Duncan had disagreed, as was to be expected, but he had spent the time to address me with a simple statement, “Love does not eradicate the possibility for dysfunction, Cody.”

In a world where conflict drove the human mind forward, I could not bring myself to agree with him.

For the sake of parting wishes I was thankful his presence never crossed the threshold of the justice building, for it would have only led to a conversation better left unspoken.

I did not love my brother, not for the sake of sacrifice or sanity.

Instead Tweed was to be the last face I saw before descending the steps to eight’s heart for a final time, boarding a train with a destination known, but not wished for. Yet there was no hesitation with feet placed one in front of the other, rather an acceptance of the five steps of meeting death— those which could not be changed.

When you had reached acceptance, it was safe to say you were either the damned or the desolate.

I suppose I am both, but I do not know the position of the girl who has already found her place at the table stretching from door to door of the train car.

“I would say I’m sorry, but we both know this isn’t the time for empty condolences.”

I took a sip from the sweet, heavenly lemonade before taking a small bite from my muffin. Tasty, chocolatey, amazingly superb. I let my eyes raise to the boy, Cody I think his name was. He was as unlucky as me, having a sibling, or a cousin reaped. I couldn't remember. I do remember who it was however. Noah Bowers-Fox the name rings in my head. The other tribute in district eight along with Lily and Imp Stole last games. I remember what happened to him too. The cornucopia that had come alive and destroyed him, making the screen a bloody mess. I remember Lily trying to help, but not able too. I remember his ally, Wyatt O'Conner attacking Lily for something that wasn't her fault. I remember her running away and crying, sad about what had happened, traumatized. I think if she had made it out alive she would be too scared to come out of her room.

I hear what the boy says and I think to myself. Let us now aunounce the boy who will be representing the whole of district eight.... It's KINGGGGGGG RUDENESSSSSSS!!! I smile back at his rude remark and say politely, "Likewise." I leave it at that. I don't want to make any real enemies in this arena early on, especially with a boy who looks like he could chop my head off if he was given an axe to do so. I look upwards at the wall in front of me where a small screen is playing the reapings. We are at district two right now. I hear a name called, Antonette. That name struck a moment of fear in my heart from the sixty third games which I remember all too well, but then a girl volunteers, and more fear floods into me. Her eyes are like voided pits that nothing can escape from, and I know she would kill a person in a heartbeat.

I look back at Cody and say in my quiet voice, "You can sit down if you wanted to, you know."
