I'm only honest when it rains.
If I time it right, the thunder breaks
When I open my mouth.
I want to tell you but I don't know how.

I came back later that night, once the chaos of today's events had begun to simmer low in my mind, and when I saw the magnificence of relief melt off of the cheeks of my allies, it was if I could breathe once again, a child fresh out of its mother's womb, a man under a steel-toed boot that had just learned how to see the other side again. With a warmed smile and what resembled curt rapping motion against the meat of my thigh, I began to unload my bag with brill caution, fully-functioning ears but completely useless voice becoming a wall to whatever phrases dared to press up against my exterior, and my fingers a maze of actions as a sprawl of sticks and stones began to dot the area around where I stood.

I sat down.

In front of me, was what I had collected in the spot that I had sat, an imagination full of everything but a mind full of pure nil. None of them were of use to me, that much was clear, but it settled like dust in the bed of my mind that these were but a fragment of what the world was, of what the world could be, and if I squinted my eyes and tilted my head at just the right angle, these simplistic representations were seen in my image- small and incapable, but when combined as a whole, stronger than the entire universe myself. With nothing further than a brisk nod toward my comrades, I gathered the objects into a pile and placed my bag on top, securing each and every particle as if it were something more than what it was; with every action, I stifled back a yawn until finally, there was no way to hold it back, and I let the air escape, no signature sound releasing loudly from my throat like it would from someone normal; it felt almost sanctioned to be so quiet, for once.

I don't remember when I fell asleep, but when I awoke to the gentle shaking of someone's fingertips on my shoulder, it was clear in my mind that I had my digits wrapped around the contents of my bag in a security-giving fashion, as if it had tried to leave me in the midst of my weakness but I simply wouldn't allow it to. Throughout the duration of my shift, it was quiet, save for the occasional honk of a delivery word off in the horizon; nothing came or went, long past when the crickets had begun to go to bed, and certainly long after my aibell had repositioned itself at my side, a quiet rest coming upon the prickly fellow until his breathes were as silent as they had been before and the lids of his eyes fell heavy upon the base of the lid. 

Once the others had awoken, it was a piece of cake to stay awake- sure, I had been tired, with the soreness of muscles that pulled roughly at my arms and legs in every movement, but it was better than being dead, I had reminded myself, and for that, I could be thankful for a million days' worth of travel. Despite, when we began to pack up and prepare for the journey to yet another portion of this bottled hell, I couldn't help but wonder what challenged we would be met with today, and when we began to genuinely head toward where there was bound to be water- my tongue had began to grow parched, although this feeling was normal- it was everything but bliss to let my legs lead me along, and behind the others, and eventually, to a fastening creep with the drawling drum of my heartbeat in my ears.

I could have almost called it serene, had our lengthy stroll not been ended by someone- or something- that lurked in the areas around us. What it was, I would not know, but what I'd do, was for certain. Creeping along silently with stark eyes equivalent to that of the rallied up dead, I held my arms at post, knuckles turning white with the grip I used to hold my halberd at the ready. 

I jump. 

I'm only honest when it rains,
An open book with a torn out page,
And my ink's run out.
I want to love you but I don't know how.

A little broken, a little new.
We are the impact and the glue.
Capable of more than we know,
We call this fixer upper home.

I hate the way that my halberd cuts into the flesh of those before me, a sickening lag vibrating through the handle as it drags through sluggish territory and out into the open, my eyes rolling back in my head with every heartbeat. 

Ba-dum, ba-dum. 

But that is normal, I remind myself with the flick of a tongue across my lips, and when I stumble back, fist balling in my hair at the throb of the blood pouring out, it seems as if time slows, each breath I take becoming slower, and slower until it stops, my fingers throwing the halberd forward and to the wolf, the one that looks almost exact to the others (in my eyes), and the one that has wronged my friends in ways I'd never dream to let happen. 

But there was nothing.

So there was everything. 

And everything was me. 

With each year, our color fades.
Slowly, our paint chips away.
But we will find the strength
And the nerve it takes
To repaint and repaint and repaint every day.
