The eloquent rays of twilight were just beginning to dip beneath the gleaming class sea of capitol skyscrapers when Kirito departed from the training center. A gentle breeze moved softly through his locks of brown hair as his feet carried him down the crowded streets. Above the cacophonous chants for blood found within the din of the shifting sea of capitolites Kirito could hear Caesar and Claudius discussing the red rivers produced by the current game's feast. As much sympathy Kirito felt for the tributes caught within the feast's storm of blood, his mind was too busy lost in a realm of shadows. Memories of a time once eclipsed by the magnitude of his games had once again been beckoned to the surface of his conscious.
Golden locks mixed with the sound of waves fused with the bustle of the cynical city's night life. A faint taste of chlorine swirled within the saliva of Kirito's mouth in response to the triggering thoughts. Kirito could feel his heart wrenching more and more with every bitter sweet memory that trickled through the light of his mind. After an entire year, it all still felt like only yesterday, but then again, things often did for Kirito. Hell, Kirito could have sworn that only the day before he was dealing with the late Circe Lyon's rambunctious attitude the day they had first met. Yet in truth Kirito always knew, he knew they were nothing more than fantasies of his long torturing past.
A glaring strike of light suddenly illuminated Kirito's translucent traveling as a horde of Capitol interviewers and fans swarmed him like the dopplegangers had within the arena. Their high pitched voices rung out with the same intensity as Sue Tate's bullets but thankfully they did not deliver the same damaging blows. Still Kirito couldn't help but lift his hand in a defense against the flashing lights of their cameras as more and more of their questions poured like rubbish from their mouths. Yet even then Kirito felt as though they could detect the slight trace of tears that had since dried from Kirito's initially reaction earlier.
"Kirito what has been being a mentor like to you?" One of the many dimly minded reporters hollered out at him. However before he could even answer her question it was replaced by yet another frantic call. "Kirito everyone is dying to know, just where does Zell's inspiration for your amazing outfits come from?" This time luckily Kirito managed to shout out a quick response before the frenzy of barking hyenas once again ensued around him. "Well truthfully I can't really say. All I know is Zell asks me on occasions how I feel or what themes I like, then from their I am really just his model."
Little did Kirito realize that at the mention of the word model the entire pack would go even more ballistic. Yet this time Kirito found himself saved by the loud voice of a male reported who chose to comment on his current attire, which in fact was not one of Zell's "master pieces". "Kirito please do tell, what is the reason for wearing such depressing clothes such as that long black cloak and blank pants.?" By the time the man's question had finished and gathered everyone's attention Kirito felt his annoyance erupting from within him. "Because I fucking chose to wear it! Not everything has to be so damn fantastic!" Kirito spat out and only moments later he spotted the open mouths of the surrounding people. Surely many of them were surprised that the always happy and friendly new victor had snapped at them but right now Kirito didn't have the energy or patience for them, especially not tonight.
Gliding his hands gently through his hair Kirito spoke out softer to the now silent bunch as he began walking away from their harsh gazes. "I'm sorry but I have just had a very rough day and need some time to myself." Thankfully the posy dispersed and allowed Kirito to continue along his silent road in the now blanket of night that encroached the streets. To be perfectly honest Kirito didn't care one bit in the slightest about the report that would most undoubtedly air about his snap towards the reporters. For now all Kirito could feel within his sorrowful chest was grief.
As Kirito's footsteps echoed monotonously through the packed streets, he spotted several posters containing Leon Krigel's face and he couldn't help but shudder. Sadness washed over Kirito's body as he thought of the sorrows that must obviously be over powering Leon's thoughts. Kirito thought he was relatively shattered at the sight of Nat's but he knew that Leon must be absolutely destroyed. Kirito couldn't even begin the fathom the twisted thought of seeing Ikaia's head within the stingy fingers of some tribute now fighting there way through their own hell instead of in his own coffin.
Icy droplets were just beginning to appear upon the edges of Kirito's eyes as he turned the corner onto the final small street before his destination. However as Kirito walked in his own sniffling silence he could feel the terrifying sensation of someone watching him. So as he carried onward he looked over his shoulder and as he suspected he noticed a figure just vanishing behind a wall. Yet what made Kirito's stomach twinge even more was that he recognized the figure, in fact Kirito could have sworn the figure had been every he had since arriving in the Capitol.
Kirito's nerves were firing like fire crackers at the idea of someone watching every single one of his moves. None of it made any sense to him. So far since his victory he had made sure to be an ideal victor yet now he found himself under the tight watch of Snow without a doubt. However, as Kirito quickened his pace he wondered if Katelyn too was being spied upon by their President's deadly eyes. If it turned out that she was as well Kirito would be more than happy to find her at their meeting point sooner than later. At this point, Kirito just wanted to ensure she was safe.
Mist gathered around Kirito's feet as the eerie lights of the statue garden glimmered around him. Yet for some reason the figure had vanished once again the moment Kirito had arrived. Gratefully Kirito let out a sigh for the "privacy" he had now as his eyes jumped from terrible statue to terrible statue until he found the very one he desired. Salt dripped in the form of tears down Kirito's face as he let one of his hands run gently down Nat Krigel's face. Memories of their meeting danced through the mists as Kirito's trembling hands revealed a small white candle and a match from his pocket.
Gravity overcame Kirito's will to stand against the darkness as he slumped slowly down to his knees. Light illuminated from the flame of the match as he lit the candle on fire and placed it properly by Nat's base. As the wax now sat burning in front of the fallen boy Kirito let his tear stained words quietly surround the area around them.
"Oh Nat, I know by the time we were concealed within the arena we didn't get to see much of each other. However, I will never forget the time we spent together in the safety of the center. I still remember that day so clearly, the water surrounding us in its cool embrace as you taught me the gift of swimming. Even though I was dismal you still chose to help me, and for that I will forever be grateful. There won't be a day I go by forgetting you or any of the others I swear. I am so sorry I couldn't protect your dignity from the Capitol. I am so, so sorry Nat, I should have made sure all of the tributes went back home. However, now I promise I will from here on out, for you Nat I will."
As silence was again filled the air Kirito rose from his place upon the ground and regretfully turned his back towards the statue and the burning candle. Then as the remembrance of reality kicked in he began to walk towards the area he promised to meet Katelyn in. If Kirito was going to live up to his promises he had to start ensuring the safety of those close to him.
