The Bishop and the King [Someith vs Dustyn Day 7]

For reasons unknown, the boy from Two lived to fight another day. From losing all those close to him, to being poisoned and awaiting his last breath, to somehow watching a silver parachute float down to him from the skies above. He had been saved by those he was so certain wanted him dead, and he didn't know what to say. Thank you? It hardly seemed appropriate to thank people who had thrown him into such a compromising position from the start. He settled for keeping quiet and resting, the sounds of the ocean slapping against the rocky salt lulling him into a slumber he had thought only minutes earlier he would never awaken from.

But he did wake. And he was still there, among the quiet chaos and the false paradise and oh, the promising death. It was all still there.

He wandered around for a bit, not sure what to do, honestly. Crying didn't seem fair, as he'd already done so much of it. Going on a little tiny adventure seemed good enough, so he did just that. He looked in all of the tiny crevices and climbed the columns to gain vantage points and the only thing he could think of was that Bette would have loved a view like that, had she been there with him.

He heard him before he saw him. Dustyn had just discovered a rickety old rowboat with a pair of oars laying within, and he heard the footsteps of a running person. (Person? Or monster?) He turned in time to deflect a knife soaring directly at his face, but not without a slight abrasion to his palm. He hissed as it began to sting and pulled out his glaive, glaring at... at.

No.

Instantly, he was back in the training center, back to the ground, with breath refusing to find it's way back into his body as Someith Krearns stood over him. He had known then he would never be able to beat a beast as furious as he, but now he did not have a choice but to try.

"Why so salty?" he said, trying to ignore the shaking within his core.

Like his foe, he struck.

He landed a hit deep in Someith's neck-- a feat that surprised even him. Blood ran down his silhouette and he thought for just the slightest fleeting moment that it was enough. He thought that, perhaps, he had beaten the unbeatable.

But the result was a matching wound for Dustyn seeded deep in his gut. The pain was a fire and even his blood refused to put it out. He let out a pained grunt and clenched his teeth. (That hurt.) Though he shouldn't have been surprised. Wicked people did wicked things, and Someith Krearns was King of the Wicked, as far as Dustyn knew.

He tightened his grip and sidestepped, finally letting the training out for the first time since Neptune. Someith was trained to be a monster?

So was Dustyn, it turned out.

He pulled the boy in close for a moment, his lips quivering as they nearly made contact with Someith's ear. "Did you do it? Did you kill your own friend? Or were you like me? Did you just fail to save her?" He broke away and, much to his displeasure, tears appeared in his eyes. It was true: Dustyn had failed. Over and over again, and he was all alone because of it.

But, he thought, at least when Someith was done with him, he would get to rest.

The world became a blur as the boy from Two prepared to die. Each feeble attempt to fight back was met with more punishment and... and...

("I don't want to hurt anymore,") he thought. Dying was easy, life was painful and Dustyn Chase had felt enough pain already. He wanted it to go away.

"I think I always knew," he said between heavy breaths. "I think from the moment I saw you, I knew you'd be the one to--" his voice broke and his gaze fell to the ground. With a sigh, he looked into the heavens. The sky would be a nice home, wouldn't it? He wondered if he would get to see all those he had lost, maybe see Holden after all those years. Yes, death was okay, he decided. Maybe at that point it was just easier not to fight, but he at least wanted Bette to know he tried.

His eyes flicked to the last petal that remained on the dead grass around his wrist. It was brown with age and brittle like his bones. Like him, it was doomed since the day of the reaping, but he looked at it as setting the damn thing free when a gust of wind sent it on it's way and he was left behind. "I'll be there soon," he thought as it drifted into the sky.
