"Jory wants milk. Jacob wants crackers. Gage gets both." I carry a small bag, white in color around the bend of my left arm, letting it swing and hit my leg with each step. In the district square is where I can get these items, but the very few coins in my hands will most certainly assure me the oldest merchandise there is. It's not much, but the people that need to get rid of their outdated food and milk will take whatever they can just to make a profit and not have to throw it away. Jory will be happy though. Milk is his favorite thing. However, I get nothing because I am not to make a fuss my parents say.

"It's just that simple." I mutter, grinning from ear to ear when I reach the vendor and hold out the coins to the man. A gentle smile from his aging lips is comforting as he takes the money and I hand him the bag. "Just the usual, Sir."

Just like that, the bag is back on my arm, and I"m turning around to head back home. Though, the day has barely began and today there is a something new about it. I breath in the air, closing my eyes and when I open them, the first person I see is one of the Hope's. My heart breaks for him. When did he get back?

preston hope

("Preston, go get some eggs!") He had nodded from his mothers words, deciding not to question her authority as he was still trying to get back into the swing of things after the months of hell he had endured for all those years. Preston hates himself for his actions he had taken because now whenever he walks on through the district he normally gets people shuffling away from him or whispering to the person next to them and pointing towards him. There wasn't much for him to say or do through those moments as he made his way through the District because they were all saying it for him. Nobody would dare talk to him because they were afraid of him.

And all he wanted was a relief from all the people scared of him, he felt like he was in the detention center again where words had barely been spoken. The male would be silent through all his actions, mainly pointing and giving the coins needed to buy the item because his voice was so weak and shaken through all those months he's spent not talking; it was a nightmare brought to life.

As he turned and started walking towards the milk, deciding to do his mother another good deed so she didn't have to go out and do it herself, he felt a pair of eyes on him. Who would it be, daring to look at him and not be afraid? It felt almost special, like this once a once in a lifetime thing. He would only pray that it was someone not hoping to bring a hell down on him for his actions.

His name escapes me, but I remember his face. I know his family because of the two twin girls that have perished on those so called -games- that the capitolites love. The game that destroys family and tears apart those who used to be sound human beings. If anything ever happened to my siblings, I probably would have ended up like him. I'm not scared of him. I feel for him. His two youngers sisters are gone and he's still here. My lower lip finds its way between my teeth and then he steals a glance in my direction, I think.

A deep inhale of courage makes my path change instantly. Slowly, but surely, I walk closer to him, bouncing the bag against my leg yet again with each step. The milk sloshes around in the canister when I come to a sudden halt near the guy whose face is lit with uncertainty. I've seen that look many times on the faces of my brothers. "My condolences to you and your family on your loss."

I've seen that done many times when someone would lose a child to the games. The family left behind would be in his position and how can you really comfort someone like that? My eyes glance all around him, taking a quick glance to the marks on his wrist. "You've been gone for quite some time..." I mention, noting that after the death of his sister he had done something horrendous, but it was pain and fear induced. So, with an appearing grin, I reach out to his arm. "It's good to have you back. It would be awful to lose another."

Feeling as though my stay would be overdone, I drop my arm and take a step away from him, nodding to him as in a farewell.

A voice entered his mind, causing him to jump at the thought because who would even want to talk to him about the things he did, the rumors that have been spread about him? "My condolences to you and your family on your loss." A small, feminine voice it was that had entered his mind and it was the same story most people told him if they ever talked to him besides the occasional asking if some of those rumors are true. He would listen and nod, looking down with sadness because he knew that Lily's death was because of him. She volunteered because he decided to show her the Games, the horror of them and the sound of a cannon signaling someone had fallen. The nod was filled with understanding, almost thanking her for saying something to him because the thought of speech is so foreign to him.

"You've been gone for quite some time..." Preston would nod again, sighing at the note because everything had no chance of being restored by now. "It's good to have you back. It would be awful to lose another." She had continued, a small frown to appear on his face at the thought but it got wiped away quickly because he had someone talking to him for once, that was the treasure he had for now. He wanted to speak, he really wanted to but he hadn't spoken in months and knew that his voice would be weak and small-- he'd be seen as vulnerable for people to start attacking him.

He would look over at her and nod, smiling softly at her as she took a step back. Preston hoped this would show as he thanked her- appreciated the thought of her- an actual person besides his family actually talking to him.

He don't speak to me at all. With nothing I try to say to him will not evoke a voice or sound from him. I only get the physical signs that he's listening to me and for some reason, I feel offended by that. If it were one of my siblings, I would cross my arms in front of my body and expect an answer and give a mother's glare until he were to answer me, but this isn't my sibling. He isn't even family. He's a stranger in this district to me. He's nothing but some man I just met to whom I feel heartbroken for.

So why do I feel compelled to get him to speak?

Even when I step away, I halfway want him to tell me to stay because my heart and my head are pulling me in two different directions. I want my heart to pour out for him and to coddle him like my little brother, but my mind is telling me to walk away and be smart about his past. The conflicting polar opposites working hard on me as I turn away from him even though I saw that gracious smile.

"Well, see ya." The words feel like I'm letting him down, so I stop and sigh and turn to him. "What happened to you? What happened after the fire?" The words just flow like a waterfall without remorse of what may occur. Maybe this might spark some words to flow through that damned up hole and break free?

"Don't worry. I'm not mad at you. Not scared. Not worried about gossip. I'm just curious how you could be so brave to do that. You must have loved your sister very much. I have four siblings. I probably would have done the same."

"Well, see ya." The small girl had said, and it almost made him sad to hear the words though she sighed and turned towards him, appearing that she's not done with talking to him more. "What happened to you? What happened after the fire?" The answer couldn't be answered with simple actions, so he had to eventually use his broken voice that would never arise to be strong if he were to dare speak now. Which, he would. He opened his mouth, but closed it again. His voice is weak, though he came over it and spoke in his small yet deep voice. "I got sent there, the detention center." He would speak in small sentences.

"And there was never a moment that you'd talk voluntarily or happily, the person I got shoved into a cell with disliked to speak with me and I didn't want to speak with him. He was large, around 6'7" and it was horrifying to stay in the same room as him with him being near a foot taller than me." Forget about short fragments.

"I never spoke to anyone again after the interrogation." He had stopped, to listen to her speak. "Don't worry. I'm not mad at you. Not scared. Not worried about gossip. I'm just curious how you could be so brave to do that. You must have loved your sister very much. I have four siblings. I probably would have done the same." Preston nodded, frowning slightly. "I did it because I wanted to show them that we're all not going to show up inside a wooden coffin six feet under the ground, my family that is, because they seem to be picking them off one by one." He looked down slightly, causing him to shrug with a frown.
