Three Choices (Sophos, Troylus and Gideon)

Troylus found it difficult to move very well even three days later, but he was expected to get on with his work unless he wanted a new flogging that would open up all the scabbed over wounds from last time. He hobbled about on deck, trying to keep his back as still as possible. It amazed him as it had on the other handful of occasions he’d been flogged that so many muscles and movements were connected to his back, even simple slow walking pulled and tugged at the damaged flesh.
He dared not ask the captain for any further respite. The man was in a foul temper and drinking non-stop for days. He’d turned his whole cabin upside down and had the crew in turns searching it and then the rest of the ship, ransacking all the sailors private possessions, trying to find a precious ring. Troylus imagined it must be of great sentimental value to the man, perhaps a keepsake from a lover many years ago. It still hadn’t shown up, and the captain was offering both a hefty reward to the man who found it, and a short sharp drop to the person who took it. Troylus hoped they’d find it soon, or if not, that it had simply been lost. He didn’t like it when the captain took the law into his own hands and hanged someone; it was the sort of thing that drew peacekeepers, and he had secrets, albeit far less dire than murder, but nonetheless he wanted to keep them secret.
Troylus finished coiling the rope and stood scanning the dock. There was a small market just beyond the dock, clearly placed to attract the sailors while they were in port. He wondered if a sailor might have stolen the ring and fenced it. It would be pretty stupid to sell it so close to the ship, but perhaps they hadn’t realised how precious it was to him.
He knocked politely on Captain McGabe’s door and was given a curt ‘Enter.’ The room stank of piss and alcohol and it made Troylus’ eyes sting. The captain was not really in a mood to listen, but perked up when he heard talk of his lost property, giving permission to Troylus with an urgent wave of his arm, rushing him back out the door to check.
Troylus walked over the gangplank with practiced ease, and headed towards the markets. The walking was painful, but it was far preferable to carrying heavy things around the ship, or scrubbing the deck. He started to enjoy himself, perusing the wares at all the stalls and chatting with the stall keepers, making conversation before politely enquiring about the ring. No one seemed to have seen it, but it was a bustling place, and he figured it was worth checking each stall and taking his time about it.
