i dream of seeing sunlight, starlight, daylight. donning something other than grey and blending into everything. full lips whisper of worlds i've created outside the underground world i was born in and dark eyes sparkle at all i have not seen. wanderlust is threaded through my veins and stitched into the seams of my soul. my brother tells me to be cautious and wary of strangers and the lust to explore buried in my bones. my mother told me to be brave. my father gave me nothing, not even a last name, and disappeared before i took my first breath. my mother said that i was beautiful and that it was a gift and a curse, a useless weapon for someone underneath the earth. but i don't want to gaze into mirrors and brush unkempt hair. i want to gasp at the green and blue and yellow above and feel grass against the cracked soles of my feet, rain hammering upon my oval face, and heave in oxygen.
