They escort me off of the stage with calloused hands hidden under gloves, but I can still feel their grip piercing my skin and digging into eggshell bone. Is this how he felt? I let my eyes wander to the district around me and laugh softly- inaudibly- at the last view that I'll have of this place for a while. Did he feel so helpless? The men in white lead me into the justice building almost cheerfully and open the door of the first room to the left. This is where he was, I recall as I step in confidently and hear the signature click of the lock from behind.

Staring out the window, I wonder where my brothers are now. Where Mohs is now. Where my friends are now. I think about what I'll say if they visit me, and my gut turns a little at the thought that maybe they'll just go home and pretend that I never existed. What if I never make it home? What if I die without becoming more than just a name? But I won't- I can't. I have to finish what Septys started, and that includes staying alive 'till the very end.

"I'm going to make you proud, I promise." I look down at my feet for a moment and smile transparently before moving to take seat in one of the cloth-covered chairs across the room. It's comfortable enough, and I close my eyes- just as I had earlier today- in an attempt to pull my thoughts together. I knew what I was getting myself into whenever I raised my hand and said those words, so why does it seem so surprising now that it's actually here? I had envisioned it far more exciting, but now I'm only left with a vague sense of dread and the overlooming will to live.

I grip the arms of the chair and look to the door, waiting- hoping- that reassurance is just down that hall. It seems so close, yet so far and I take a shallow breath in hopes that it'll prepare me for the words and phrases to come. Good luck, I imagine someone telling me in the back of my mind, but it's gone within a blink; I'm left to my own thoughts and whatever is to come.

His leg aches, his head pounds, and ghosts of inky blackness still wander aimlessly across his vision, but he's awake and he's in motion, kinetic energy put to good use as he storms through the halls. The man he once was is no more in this moment- kind, gentle, understanding. It's all gone, lost to the winds, while birthday-balloon lungs inhale mass amounts of air, leaving the room cold.

Or maybe that's just him.

Trembling he halts before the keepers, his eyes boring holes into their helmets as they stand aside and growl- three minutes and open the doors.

"Take your three minutes and shove it up your ass." he hisses, but they say nothing if they hear.

He throws his cane to the ground, standing a trembling statue. His eyes slip closed as he inhales, and snap open, shooting daggers at the young boy. "Damn your brother." he snarls, limping forward, form contorting as he approaches- a damaged predator. "Damn YOU. What the fuck Quadrys? I thought we were past this." He listens to no protesting as he stops, pangs of ache slithering down his spine and into his leg.

"What am I supposed to do? How can I live with myself- this is because of him, isn't it? It's my fault I shouldn't have let him volunteer for me. I should have just gone. I should have been a man about it." The strength and rage quickly wanes away, leaving him a squall of trembling sentiment and remorse. "I tried to fix it, I tried- I really did, but I guess I couldn't atone for my sins quick enough. Instead of having one's blood on my hands, I have yours too."

Twitching fingers lift to his head, rubbing away the pounding in his temples and the rage returns, his eyes furious. "Haven't I done enough? Are we not good enough for you that you need to find other ways of killing yourself? What's mom going to say? Do you think she's going to be happy you're leaving? What about Pentys and Octys? Did you even stop to think? You're too brash Quadrys, and that's what's going to be your undoing." Already he feels the weight and pressure from another life claimed tearing away at his soul, while he begins to mentally brace himself for the inevitable implosion.

Let's live tonight like fireflies
And one by one light up the sky
We disappear and pass the crown

Today is the day that I realised that I could be loved- "He wasn't our son; he belonged to everyone."

I try my best not to feel any regret whenever Mohs enters the room; his words shock me and sting me and pierce me as if I am paper thin, but I'm shielded by my dragon-breath glare and ability to hold a straight face. "Damn your brother." He seems to snap at me as he limps forward and pauses. "Damn YOU."

I don't think he can tell, but I wince at his tone. After all, this is what I've trained for my entire life- this is what I was built to do. What makes it so different now that my brother is dead? If anything, it gives me all the more fuel to get in, get out, and bring my family glory.

"What the fuck Quadrys? I thought we were past this."

We were.

"What am I supposed to do?"

Wish me luck.

"How can I live with myself-"

You'll find a way.

"This is because of him, isn't it?"

Partially.

"It's my fault- I shouldn't have let him volunteer for me."

You wouldn't have done any better.

"I should have just gone."

You didn't.

"I should have been a man about it."

I sit attentively as he begins to become less angry and morph into something that resembles pain; I feel sorry for him, for how he's feeling, but I don't have anything to add to the conversation that won't tear down the trust we've built. I owe Mohs for taking care of the Lexigs since moment that my brother left us, but his blame for my feelings is something that puts a muzzle on my empathy. He speaks again, but this time his words are mushed together like pudding.

"I tried to fix it, I tried- I really did, but I guess I couldn't atone for my sins quick enough. Instead of having one's blood on my hands, I have yours too."
He speaks as if I've already been murdered, as if I am someone who is weak and not a force to be reckoned with. But again, I hold back and keep quiet. I let him finish.

"Haven't I done enough?"

All that you could.

"Are we not good enough for you that you need to find other ways of killing yourself?"

Why do you think so lowly of me?

"What's mom going to say?"

I don't know. Something more than mine will, for sure.

"Do you think she's going to be happy you're leaving?"

More happy than if you were.

"What about Pentys and Octys?"

I'll be back.

"Did you even stop to think?"

I did.

"You're too brash Quadrys, and that's what's going to be your undoing."

I breathe in deeply for a moment at this, and close my eyes until I can work up the courage to speak. I stand, and despite the fact that I rest a good few inches beneath the man before me, I make my confidence more than known.

"Don't count me out so early on, Mohs Aurum. I'm not going to go down as easily as you think."

'Because everybody dies.

He expects no answer to any of his questions- it'll be the last time he sees the oldest Lexig boy ~~for a while,~~ and he'd rather not have these ~~last~~ memories tainted with infuriation and resentment. So instead of screaming, yelling, knocking him out and dragging him away, Mohs Aurum falls apart.

It isn't the graceful kind of solemn whispers that plague most justice buildings, with hushed promises of future recovery in the distant future, not gentle cries of 'I love you' or 'Please come back.' His hips collapse backwards into one of the chairs and he completely shatters; the opposite of the man he was five minutes ago. This isn't Septys. Quadrys didn't choose his path as a noble albeit desperate out. His life wasn't full of anger and rage, not anymore. This... This man, taken into open arms, now squandered the second chance at life his brother's death brought.

His shoulders shake and an ugly, primal noise rises from his throat as his hands lift and push into his eyes, bright stars pin-pricking a background void. A heart barely held together with thin strands of gold splinters apart and sends an ache across the man's chest, caving his ribs inward as he gasps for breath, some sort of rope- because even though Quadrys can't be more than three years younger than Mohs, the older male already feels the ache of losing a child.

He doesn't apologize; he can't. Even if he did, it wouldn't do any good- the Lexig boy already burned that bridge. It takes many long moments punctuated with gasps and shudders until he can peel himself away and lift his gaze. Piercing blue rimmed with crimson stares down the boy while he wipes his nose on his sleeve, and quivers.

"You're not Septys." he finally whispers, and his eyes draw closed as his shoulders tremble and shake, his eyes cast away, low. "Haven't I taught you that it's okay to be you?"

Today is the day that I realised that I could be loved- "He wasn't our son; he belonged to everyone."

Mohs falls apart- I feel a sharp pang in my chest- I lock my knees in order to keep standing. "What makes a person live?" I hear a voice in the back of my head whisper tauntingly. "What makes a person decide what is wrong and what is right?" I think about reaching forward and comforting the man who has taken me in despite invalid protests, but I withdraw my action and instead keep my eyes on him, on his breaking down, on how he seems so affected by something that he probably wouldn't have even put mind to had I done this a year ago instead of now.

He opens his mouth to speak and I stand a little straighter. "You're not Septys." Voice but a whisper as he avoids looking at me, I keep my eyes trained on him to fill the gap. "Haven't I taught you that it's okay to be you?" I swallow hard and ball my right fist against my thigh tightly.

I want to scream at him, but I only raise my voice instead. We're running out of time by now, and I can feel the seconds tick-ticking away with every breath I breathe in as preparation.

"This is me, Mohs." I take another breath, albeit shaky before continuing. "This is what I've trained for since I was five god-damned years old."

I take a step backward and look out the window, then back to him, then back at the window, then back to the ground where our shoes rest in quiet. "What makes you think that my brother's death makes me any different than I was? I was going to do this either way and the fact that he got to it before I did doesn't mean shit to me." A lie, if only partially.

"I may be down one on my sibling count, and yeah- I miss him. But that won't put a stop sign in the road for where I'm heading."

My fist loosens ever-so-slightly and I sigh with the intent of keeping my mouth shut. I can't get angry now- not when I've come this far- but what makes him think that he knows me so well when he's only seen me in the weakest of who I can be?

Surely I don't even know the answer to that.

"...Alright yes."

The words that slip free from his tongue surprise Mohs, even as his arms lift, hands pushing down gently against his shoulders. "Yes you're right- fuck. I've gotten so wrapped up I forgot that sometimes my students actually want to go." His eyes still drip, still pour, but he's stronger for it.

As things become more and more broken, they become more and more beautiful- something new created out of the ashes of the old like majestic mosaics of the past. "Mom and Octys are waiting outside. he murmurs, fingers struggling as they lift from sturdy shoulders, stroking a lock of dark hair. "I love you little brother. I'll do what I can for sponsor ships here.... Make friends with Opal. She helped Septys last time- maybe she can help you. Maybe you can succeed where he failed." he offers the smallest of smiles knowing his words don't mean shit to the kid, and that they're more for his ego anyway but it still feels good to say them.

Then the mask is back- that sarcastic, frustrated man who grew up too soon with hands too strong and furious to do anything but heal. "...Be good. Make friends. They'll keep you alive." He knows this already, but again it feel better to actually say things than to let them go. Still he regrets allowing the boy's brother to take his place in the games, regrets not allowing Fault to go in his stead- but if what Quadrys says is true- and there are no doubts in his mind about the justification- then it would have happened in the seventy second, or the seventy third or even the seventy fourth anyway. Still reeling from shock, his heart flips in his chest and he dips down and kisses the boy between the eyes, closing the gap between them while his hands fumble for fistfuls of fabric to draw him closer.

Though he's sure Quadrys will struggle, he only holds for a moment before releasing his grip and stepping back to admire the young man the boy had become in the year following his brother's death. "Be good."
