Writing Thinks "Says" "Hears"

The mirror was beautiful. Silver lining the edges of the mirror. Glass that reflects the image in front of it, a scene that it records like a scene in a movie. Icy blue eyes stare back at the person inside the mirror. Black hair that’s consistently being pushed up and into a fringe, to let the icy blue eyes shine in the presence of the mirror reflecting the adopted boy. Stubble lines his chin and lips. Plump lips form a frown that shines in the mirror. A sadness that was created long ago was finally being understood in that moment. Two other figures stand behind the boy. Voices can be heard in the background as they are telling him the truth about the flames that engulfed his home years ago. Tears flow down his cheeks, a salty substance that signifies his sorrows from years ago.

Toned arms lift multiple plates at once. Mother always asked him to help with the dishes. Placement of the plates had to be perfect in storage. Mother’s ideals were to be absolutely perfect. A perfection that was burned into him just like the flame that engulfed his old home. Life’s brand new form of torture that had to be learned and mastered. His toned body twisting and turning to put dishes in places where they had to be or else he would have to do it all over. Large hands reaching for the silverware to put in the drawer. His rather normal feet moving with ease around the kitchen, avoiding other siblings running through the room. Burns on his chest now only scars. A slight memory of the feeling of the burns stinking could be felt, but the pain wasn’t real, only a fake created by the brain to torture him.

Night time was his favorite time. The stars about the sky shine like a calming night light in a child’s bedroom. The darkness of the sky puts a feeling of vastness into his life. The cool breeze reminds him that he isn’t burning on the inside or outside. The noises of the animals reminding him of life and it’s vast amounts of mysteries. One of these mysteries is the question he keeps asking himself. Why did I live the fire? What is my purpose in life? Why me? No one ever answered him. It was like that all the time. Life was meaningless to him. He was a waste of space in his head, a human who barely lived his life. A broken man who had no purpose, but to help the family.

The night sky was bright with stars, yet the boy was being called back inside by the eldest of them all, "Jack! Dinner's ready!" Mitchell Laws was standing at the door. The man who saved his life for no reason. A hero in Jack's eyes, but also a villain. The Corradi boy's voice trembles, but still makes it out into the open, "I'll be there in a second, Mitchell." His feet had a mind of their own as they took him to the house. The dining table was set up in perfect order. Lots of kids rushing around to their seats. Kids with smiling faces and lost families. Parents who treated them all with respect. The Corradi boy made his way to his seat next to Mitchell. The eldest of them all who never talked much during dinner.

Jaime Laws made eye contact with Jack, a look in the eye of interest. The Corradi boy wanted to escape, but there was nowhere to escape. Father spoke with interest in Jack's life, "Jack! How was your day son?" The word son made the Corradi boy sick. He wasn't a Laws boy like Carter or Mitchell. Corradi would be his haunting. Illegitimate child of the Laws family. Adopted because their hero saved him. Mitchell was nothing but a villain to Jack. The villain who saved him from dying, but kept his family hidden from him. Their deaths burned into his head still and Mitchell's eyes avoiding him when they are brought up. Jack put up a fake smile and replied with every ounce of strength he had, "Mr. Laws, my day has been wonderful. Nothing is better than helping Ma with the dishes and being a part of the family." Father looked at Jack questioningly and all the Corradi boy did was smile and continue eating the food in front of him.

Mitchell was staring at him with an intense stare. The Corradi boy swallowed a lump that seemed to be forming in his throat. Mitchell always was his brother in a way, but recently that had changed. Thieving used to be the thing they did together. A thrill in a way. Jack used to do it when he first came to the Laws' house. Mitchell had caught on to what Jack had been doing and joined him after a year or so. They were the criminals of District twelve for awhile, but most people thought it was just kids being kids, until they started stealing higher valued items. Mitchell and Jack used to steal things together, until the event happened.

It was a sunny afternoon, Jack had spent most of the morning crying. Ma and Pa had told him that morning how they found Jack. The fire and the death of his parents. Tears had been falling down his face for a few hours. The eldest Laws boy had entered his room quietly. Jack's teary eyes stare at the eldest Laws boy in sorrow. A thought popping in the Corradi boy's head, Why didn't Mitchell tell me about my parents? Mitchell had stayed quiet about his parents and Jack hated him for that. Jack had the right to know what happened to his real parents. A sorrow was filling him. The eldest Laws' boy was pushing Jack to go stealing with him. Jack only agreed to get his mind off of his parents. The scar on his chest burned like the fire that turned his parents to ash.

It had gone perfectly to start with. The Corradi boy was distracting the clerk from seeing Mitchell do his thing. Jack got an idea though. A terrible one that would be payback for the things Mitchell had kept from him. The Corradi boy left. The clerk caught Mitchell and the eldest Laws boy was punished with a whip. Marks of the pain that will live with him like the scars on Jack's body. Similar, yet different in their own ways. That's how Mitchell and Jack grew apart from each other. The duo was broken from that day on. Jack was the one who broke it, but Mitchell was the villain in the story and the Corradi boy could never forgive him.

The house was comfy. His mother and father cooking dinner in the other room. It was a calm before the storm. Flames engulf the home and all little Jack knows in that he's frightened. His body won't move though. The Corradi boy was scared stiff. Smoke began filling the room. Coughing and coughing of smoke as it fills his lungs. This was it. This was the day Jack dies, except it wasn't. Something fell and knocked him over. Jack was now on the ground, able to breathe a bit better. The boy screamed as loud as he could with the smoke filled lungs. "Help! Please help!" The screams could be heard, but Jack didn't know this. The building was burning and burning. His parents were nowhere to be seen. Only smoke and flame were able to be seen. His body feels warm. A painful warm and that's when he starts freaking out more. A flame caught on him. The boy rolls around trying to put the flame out. Tears already stream down his face. The fire goes out and a face appears.

Blue eyes meet his savior's blue eyes. Arms wrap around his waist and his savior pulls him out of his house. The only memories he's ever known. A continuous crackling is heard in the background. The savior speaks softly, "Sorry about your house." All Jack can let out is his sorrows. The tears fall down his cheeks, cleaning the ash that lays there. A pain rips through his chest still and arms wrap around Jack, a comforting warmth that causes a little pain to his injury, yet makes him feel safe. The Corradi boy was safe and alive, but all that Jack could think was, Why?

The scars feel painful, but they aren't. Jack has learned. The boy has learned more than he thought he would from the Laws' family. A family that he didn't belong to in the first place. All he wanted to do was leave them. Leave them so they can be happy without him. Jack didn't deserve a family like them. Jack only deserved death. A death that was painful and slow. Jack was nothing but a waste. A waste in his fake family. Jack Corradi-Laws didn't belong anywhere, but in a grave.
