My knife plunges into Hettie's back and I can't help but feel some sort of exhilaration. Another knife strikes next to mine and I turn to give a nod to Danny. Suddenly my heart froze as I heard a crack. I whirled to look where the noise came from and instantly yelled some indeterminate noise. Insanis was standing beside Delta, hammer in hand, as Delta's jaw goes slack. I rush over to her but before I can say a word a knife slices into her hand and fire begins to lick up her skin. "DelTAAAA!" I scream and throw myself at her, clutching at her clothes and her hands but the fire makes her too hard to hold. "Delta no," my voice shatters like my glass wall and everything comes tumbling down.

I look to where the knife came from and see Cecilia. Behind me there's a scream and suddenly there's a knife in my own hands. Seconds before I would have released the blade, I instead sheath it and clench my fists. "How could you?!" I'm stalking up to her, shoulders arched and back stiff. "HOW COULD YOU?!" Before she can turn and run I'm next to her and I take a shot at her.

I feel my fist connect with her side, feel the ribs as they snap. She's a child and her bones offer little resistance against the absolute rage and despair I feel. I know I've broken a rib, I know I've probably broken my hand, but nothing matters because even that much is not enough. Delta is still gasping for air behind me and I can't bear to take it. With my piddly act of revenge completed, I turn to my friend.

The fire smolders on her body, and most of her hair and skin are gone. I want to hold her but that would only cause her more pain. "Delta, Delta, I'm sorry. Delta please forgive me. This is my fault, this is my fault. Delta..." I know I'm crying but I don't try to stop. At this point nothing comes from me but sobs and her name. Delta Delta Delta Delta She is all I can think about right now, all I can see before me. Feet stomp through the grass but I don't pay them any mind.

"Delta, what have I done?"

When Death came it came screaming, and Danny couldn’t so much as reach forward to call against it before it devoured Delta whole.

Just like that. An instant, a blink of the eye, a flying moment that she wasn’t fast enough to cling to. The air flew from her lungs so quickly that she wondered if someone had physically hit her. But no, that was the problem, wasn’t it? They hadn’t hit her at all. They hadn’t hit her because they thought she was too strong, and it was human nature to prey on the weak. They’d singled out Delta as the weak one, the target.

They had no idea how wrong they were, and now they never would. Because even without Death whispering over her skin and lingering in Danny’s every inhale, she would never be as strong or brave as Delta Castley had been.

“I didn’t…” her lips seemed to move without her permission, forming breathy words as they came into her head. She wasn’t sure how the sentence was supposed to end. She stood there in the eye of the storm and stared, feeling more broken than she ever had in her life. It hurt. It hurt worse than she’d expected to, worse than she’d been preparing for with Aiden for months now. It hurt in her chest and in her stomach and behind her eyes, stinging in the form of tears that she forced back. Even now, when pain and crying was completely justifiable, she refused. She was too used to lying to everyone, too used to lying to herself.

She’d failed. She’d failed to protect Delta, her friend, her ally. She’d failed to save her life. And she’d failed to avenge her, because before her four enemies still stood even though beside her there were only two left. She’d failed in the one thing she’d trusted herself with, the single promise she risked making because promises meant a future and that was something she knew she didn’t have. Delta. The loss clawed like a monster up her throat, pounding against her ribcage and slashing at the inside of her chest. Delta.

She’d thought for sure she would make it, and was sure based on her training score that many others had, too. She could almost hear the gamblers muttering in dismay, commenting on how she should have fought harder and longer. Or better yet, it should have been that other girl, instead. That one from three, that eight. She should have been the one to die.

For perhaps the first time in her life, Danny agreed with the Capitol.

Ezero’s shouts brought her back to reality. Her everything felt like it was going numb and she stumbled back a few steps, chest heaving. Bright eyes darted everywhere except the body, searching for something to hold onto. They landed on Basil from where he was crouched on the ground, grimacing. “C’mon,” he said, reaching out to her as if she were the one who needed assurance and assistance and safety. As if she was the one who was broken and bleeding.

Maybe she was. It wouldn’t be the first time.

“Okay,” she gasped out, snatching onto his hand like a lifeline. She was too much of a liar to start crying, but she came close when Ezero’s voice reached her ears again. “Okay.”

But it wasn’t okay, and it would never be okay again because Delta Castley was dead.

And she shouldn’t have been, because she was the strong one and Danny was anything but.

I've never felt so alive.

I've only just now started to notice the intense heat of the area. Sweat pours from my brow, dripping from my nose and hitting the ground in drops. I'm panting, swinging this hammer around in such hot weather is actually taking it's toll. My arms are screaming at me for a break but I deny them that luxury. They'll get their rest when our enemies are dead. However, through gritted teeth and deep breaths I'm grinning with pride. My hammer sailed through the air so easily before colliding with her face, making it one hundred times uglier than Hettie had already made it. The sound of some kind of bone, some kind of that all to familiar crunch and I immediately know it. That's another broken bone. Her mouth caves in easier than an eggshell.

Pleasure runs through my veins like a river at her agony. I'm just thinking, imagining everything she's feeling at the injuries she is sustaining. "Accept it!" I command, allowing everyone in the arena, everyone in Panem to hear me. She has no choice but to accept judgement. She's useless, everyone in this damn arena has power over her, even the boy who's chest I broke, even he has ascended higher than her in the pecking order. You're weak and useless, and now I will establish my dominance. That's all she is now, a hunk of meat that's going to go through the constant cycle of agony; she's going to feed my pleasure with every yelp, every break, every gash.

No one will save her.

Honestly, this is what I've been missing all my life. The disappointment at the greyness of District Six, the fact that I haven't gone anywhere. The fact that I hadn't reached the dream.

They're all corpses, everyone in this fight is just another corpse in the way. Altogether there will be a mountain of twenty three corpses that I shall climb. I'm going to take the true crown, and to do that I will climb the mountain of agony. We're basically corpses but I've never felt so alive.

I step back in admiration. Her face is a mess, her once pristine features marred by judgement. Her jaw is slack and I immediately know that was my doing. Delta, her name is Delta. I heard her friends call her that. She scored a ten in training, she's from District Nine, she didn't choose to be here but she was reaped anyway. The thoughts of who she once was comes flooding back. I know your story, now it is time to end it.

I blink.

The orange ball rushes past, slicing through her hand like butter and I feel an odd sense of satisfaction to see the clump of red fall from her hand. In the corner of my eye I see that Cecilia let the weapon fly, besides she's the only one using fire and a knife. However, her hand is quickly blocked by the flame, before I know it it's up her sleeve, then around her torso, then it's engulfed her whole damn body. I immediately know what's coming, the fire greedily eats through her flesh and clothes like a pack of rabid dogs. But when she screams it's an entirely different voice, a male's voice in fact.

Claude Aeger screams in agony as Willis Keeni pours more and more whiskey over his burning body, feeding his agony while feeding my pleasure at the same time.

I smile, not bothering to put an end to it all because I'm not an angel of mercy, I'm not weak. I watch the flames enjoy their meal.

"Oh my dear ripred fuck wow...yes...Cecilia you little princess!" Hettie exclaims, bringing my attention from the feast of flame. Iain retches, spewing his breakfast all over the floor. A pang of irritation runs through my, he's spoiling the image. "Do not scream girl, just accept judgement." I say but she clearly cannot hear me, the flames feasting are probably too loud.

Time freezes and her canon fires, signalling the end of the fun and the beginning of mercy.

"Come help me Insanis!" My queen commands, tearing my attention to her.

"Hettie, Ceci, Insanis, I think we should go." Iain tells us through his cracked voice.

"Coming." I grunt but before I can even make my way there Iain bolts away, obviously not being able to handle the fun.

On the other hand I have not felt more alive.

However, it seems the boy from Seven begs to differ because he bolts it as well, not able to handle any more. "I'll finish the job when I next catch you!" I call out to him, a my sadistic grin making a slow reappearance.

Unfortunately, it's interrupted by Cecilia's district partner. His grief fills the air, his friend's name repeatedly being called out as if that will bring her back. "HOW COULD YOU?!" He screams, immediately turning in Cecilia. He's a flash, expertly moving in and closing the distance between him and Cecilia within seconds. Shit. I being moving as fast as this warhammer will allow, silently willing her to move out the fucking way.

Yet all I get are apologies that are obviously falling on deaf ears because his fists are clenched. I'm almost right next to them but I pause as his fist buried itself in her ribs and she's double over and crumpled to the floor, her body like jelly. I should turn back. I should leave her to suffer her own damn fate since she put herself in this mess. She could've dodged, she could've turned and ran, she could've done anything but stand still and let him do that.

Honestly, I'm surprised. When I saw that kid I didn't exactly think he'd have the guts to hit a little girl. This arena is full of surprises. Perhaps that's what makes me feel so alive.

My body's an automatic machine, it moves on it's own with barely any thought from it. But what kind of king cannot even help his servants?

"We're going!" I yell, using by bandaged hand to pull Cecilia from under him (a dull black pain shoots through my hand and up my arm and I suppress the urge to yell out in frustration) and force her to her feet despite the obvious pain.

My flesh is begging me to lay down and die but it's pleas are as meaningless as Cecilia's apologies. I tolerate the pain.

And despite all this I feel so alive.

"You'll be next for that, I'm gonna gut you like a fish..." I snarl at him, my face knitted into an evil scowl. It's not a threat, it's a promise that will last a lifetime and unlike Iain I don't make empty promises.

I spot Hettie in the corner of my eye, the red patches have soaked into her dress, fusing with her outfit and becoming one with her form. But what kind of king cannot even give the queen aid? Hettie has to get priority, if Cecilia doesn't know to run now then I'm not responsible for what this guy does to her. She will just have to accept judgement right after she passed it. I turn my back to him (stupid, stupid, stupid) and my heart's racing, I don't even care I just keep moving. Despite the sweat and grime and my legs screaming at me for a break I keep them moving. I know I'm not going very fast (I'm as mobile as a rock with this heavy hammer) but it has to be fast enough.

Every step closer towards her feels like a decade but I keep my eyes locked on her injured form. No one has the right to pass judgement on her as they did. If I'm lucky Cecilia has rushed herself to safety and District Eight has fucked off. No matter, he's in the back of my mind now because I've made it to Hettie.

"Sorry I'm late." I say, my voice barely louder than a whisper as I sling her arm over my neck and put my hand around her waist so she can lean on me. Her body feels warm and wet blood. White hot rage begins boiling within me once again because they didn't have the right to pass judgement on the queen. I suppress the rage with another winning smile so no one will notice but I know, the silent anger is only known to me. I'll find them again: the boy from seven, the girl who cut Hettie face and the boy from Eight. I'll find them for sure next time and I'll pass judgement, I'll decide their final punishment.

And what is the punishment for striking a royal?

Off with their heads.

With a frayed yet strong grunt; me, my promise of judgement and my queen drag ourselves away from the beautiful burned corpse that was once known as Delta of District Nine.

Her death leaves me feeling so alive.

I want to go home. Iain needs to go home. The words feel so foreign in my head as I stare at the scene in front of me. Is this the price I am goiing to pay to be able to go 'home'? To kill innocent people and make their breaths stop and to make their hearts stop beating and to make them feel absolute pain as I am rewarded with one more person dead and a step closer to being home?

Why did I even light my knives on fire? Why do I even throw these at them instead of just casually missing...

Iain and Hettie - their bodies are being raveged and cut and torn apart right before my very eyes. The other two, the boy and girl, I can't get close to in order to protect Hettie, but Iain is being savegely ripped into as if he was a rag doll and not worth another day to stay alive. It was because of him that I've been able to have this much hope for his heart. I wouldn't want him to have to suffer. I don't want him to have to be dubbed a 'meat shield' as Hettie calls him. He's so much more than than, but me? I am no longer. I went against everything I told Iain I wasn't going to do. I wasn't going to turn into some animal and kill. I wasn't going to be the one that was going to viciously attack someone. My brothers at home, if they saw me right now, they would certainly disown me and if I ever made it home, they would never trust me again. I've only ever had a gentle hand against them, yet, here I am tearing apart some girl...

The flickering flames draw me out of my stupor as her screams come out. The smell of flesh being burnt is interrupted by the site of my district partner trying to hug on her and to relieve her of the pain that I've just caused her. And all I can do is stand here, dumbfounded. Even the words of victory that Hettie screamed in my direction are lost in the ever present crackling of flames in front of me and the sight of the girl being engulfed by the flames my knife has caused is enough to make me lose the grip on the remaining two flaming knives and they fall to the ground.

Tears well up in my eyes, pooling at the edges as the scene in front of me goes from bad to worse. Ezero starts calling her name. Yelling for her. "I'm... sor..."

The words are lost. I open my mouth to speak to Ezero as I take a few steps forward to apologize, and he turns and spots me. The look in his eyes scare me immediately, but I can't move. I'm frozen where I am because the smell of her burning flesh wafts into my nose even more and then Ezero, my district partner - my only sole companion to talk about district eight to, comes at me like a raging bull.

"I"m sorry!" The knife in his hand is up. I know I'm about to die, right here and right now.

"I'm sorry!" The closer he gets, my heart skips a beat. My body prepares for the plunge of the knife into my heart.

"I'm..." He does something else at the last minute. The knife is gone, and as I use my arms to protect myself, I hear the crack first.

The pain second.

And my breath dimish last.

My knees drop from the weakness and crash onto the ground and suddenly I find my forhead being pressed against my knees as I curl up and cry into my own sorrow. My apologies weren't accepted. My fate has been decided and I wait for another hit but nothing follows after that. Nothing.

I can hear the wheeze in my chest as I try to reinflate my lungs from the sudden shock of pain and the lack of oxygen. I turn my eyes upward to see him walking away, leaving me broken. He has no idea how much I feel bad. So, with one breath that I try to suck in, I try to redeem myself.

"EZERO..." I cough, forcing more air into my lungs no matter how painful it is. "I'M SORRY..."

I no longer try to keep my body up and let the events that just played come to haunt me. I roll to the side, curled up and crying as I wish for death to come upon me. There is no salvation now. I'm one of the damned now. I'm no longer worth the breath that enters my lungs unwillingly and painfully.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." The words spill out in hushed whispers. It feels like a lifetime that I will have been lying here waiting for Ezero to be hated in all of our district. Yet, only moments later, I feel an arm come around my body and the pain around my chest intensifies as I'm brought to my feet. Shockwaves of hell course through my body and I'm being carried a few feet away from where I was just at and I can't even muster up enough voice to get this person to let me go. I just try to remove the hand that is causing the pain to worsen.

"You'll be next for that, I'm going to gut you like a fish..." The threat and the sound of the voice belongs to Insanis. I'm safe. Evidently that's the reason Ezero didn't try to finish me off. Insanis must have scared him off and my plans to use these much bigger tributes as intimidators has worked. The wolves behind the kittens. A few more steps and I'm released and a new round of blinding pain comes as I try to straighten my back and crumple to my knees once more and survey the scene in front of me. Hettie's clothing is soaked through with blood. Her face is whiter than a ghost and pain filled. I watch as Insanis runs to her and scoops her up to make sure that she's well taken care of and I realize, that no matter what he just did for me, I know where his priorities lie. He will sacrifice both me and Iain first before Hettie.

I try to search the area for Iain but he's no where to be found. No sight of the guy that I fought for. No idea what direction he might have went. As much as I want him to be couregous and stayed to help, he didn't and Ezero could have killed me and he never would have known or been there to protect me.

I force myself to my feet, grimacing with every breath trying to enter my lungs. So much blinding pain as I finally get to a helpless run but I see something I must do first. While Ezero, still mourning over the burnt and smoldering girl I just killed, her bag is being left unattended not far from them, and closer in my direction as I let Insanis disappear into the nothing and I go back to grab the bag and the discarded weapons and return to the direction in which they fled.

I'm breathing as shallow as possible, pressing gently against my broken ribs when I finally find the people I most need to find. The horrible guilt I feel will not be felt by any of them cause I am no longer one of them. Iain will hate me. Insanis and Hettie may envy me, taking a kill they might have wanted. I only wonder if I might have earned my spot among them?

Being defeated is not in my forte and I am not going to let two juveniles to fights take me out. I will not let anyone stab me in the back, realistically…or metaphorically. Nor will I allow anyone to take down my team members…not after how they have all reprised themselves as worthy allies. I never thought Cecilia had it in her…killing someone and the greatest shock horror is of course Iain actually hitting something with that spear of his. They must actually learn something useful in the lower Districts, stereotypes that float around in Four are most certainly wrong.

Looking back to my mini attacker, it seems iain has already let himself down, regurgitating the last meal he ate all over the ground. The boy needs to grow a stomach before he dies of some sort of bulimia.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..." Why must Cecilia apologise, it’s what the Capitol want us to do…kill people and she has granted them that wish. Really she should be thanked, she saved that girl from days of agony and pain, a quick death at the beginning of the games is a better than a prolonged one. Obviously I am not going to endure such a thing, I am used to pain and know very well how to rinse the blood out my clothes and seal the holes that it is seeping out of.

I can remember getting wounded in the training centre at home…not as severe as I am now of course. A few nicks and bruises, fortunately no broken bones but I have tended to them before. My mentally disturbed cousin Ronnie has had a lot of wounds inflicted on him, which I have helped fix…for my own studies of course. He is a great fighter however the fact that is brain has been rattled about since birth, means he doesn’t know how to stop. He doesn’t feel pain like any normal person does, he just carries on and on…even when he has dropped to the ground he carries on fighting. It is a good thing and bad thing, one day he is going to end up getting himself killed…and hopefully I will be home to see the last fight that takes him out completely.

Watching the gathering of tributes, iain and the other two that we were fighting seem to have bottled it…leaving their loner boy with us. "HOW COULD YOU?!" Shouts fall from the District Eight boy’s mouth as he questions Cecilia’s actions. He is just another stupid boy, who doesn’t understand the game that he has been thrown into. Before Cecilia gets the chance to stab him in the back, the boy throws a punch to her ribs. What a fool he is…a stupid…fool. Throwing a punch when the rest of his alliance has deserted him…he deserves a prolonged death for hitting my princess.

”You’re an idiot for doing that District Eight…I’ll have your head!”Snarling I’d trying to raise my war hammer in the air and give him a good whack around the head with it however the pain that is beginning to send a tsunami through my body halts those actions. Heat begins to pulsate through my veins as liquid drips from my brow. The humidity in this area is unbearable, it is much worse than being stuck in the stuffy District Four training centre full of sweaty boys. My lunges begin to cease as breathing becomes harder and harder. Slowing down, my heart beat begins to become weaker and weaker due to the loss of power from blood and oxygen supply.

Growling I’d try not to surrender to my collapsing body however the battle is hard to win. This isn’t my time for revenge as soon as I am healed…I will get that boy Ezero’s head and stick it on Iain’s spear. I am sure his skull would be a lovely piece of decoration to the arena; my addition will make this arena look more appealing than what the gamemakers have created.

"Sorry I'm late." Slinging my arm around his neck, Insanis would eventually come to my aid. Resting my weight on his body, I’d allow him to manoeuvre me away from the area. As my body rests against his a reassuring sensation runs through my body and emotions I haven’t felt in a while join them. There is something about being in Insanis’ company that excites me…he is different to all the other tributes in this arena…he is definitely my type of guy. Hopefully, we will have a lot of hours to spend with each other before one of us (and hopefully him) has to depart from here with the sound of a cannon.

Looking down at my ruined dress, the appearance would actually put a smile on my face. I look war battered…but at least I survived the battle unlike that District Nine girl.

With Delta dead before me, smoldering like the ashes of the fire I had known she was, I was alone. Everyone had turned and ran and so I was alone with a corpse. She didn't even look like Delta anymore. "I'm sorry, Delta." I hang my head, eyes shut so I can remember who she used to be, and not the thing she had become. The pile of scorched flesh before me says nothing. She doesn't touch me on the shoulder and tell me it's okay. I will never know what she thinks. Though for me I know it doesn't matter. Even if she doesn't blame me, I blame myself. How could I have let her get attacked, how could I have not protected her like I had promised to.

No matter what anyone said, it was my fault this happened. MY. FUCKING. FAULT. Now she's dead and I can't even apologize anymore because she won't be able to hear me.

The tears that run down my face carve tracks in the grime on my skin. My breathing is heavy, relaxing only slightly from sobs as I remember who Delta had been to me. At the thought of her hand in mine, the moment when I had pulled her from the sink hole, I broke back into wracking sobs. Eventually I was able to breathe again. My stomach stopped lurching and my lungs filled with air once more. My heart still bled fiery red beads but I had exhausted the tearful part of my grief. I reached out to touch her face but stopped. This wasn't Delta, this was something broken and burned. Delta was gone.

Standing, unsteadily, I turn away from the charred remains and walk after Danny and Basil. While passing part of the sink hole where Delta had fallen in, I noticed a cave set into the side. Without thinking, I jumped into the hole and dove into the cave. The water came up to my waist but I plowed through it with relative ease. My numb mind didn't take in anything more than the chest that was lodged at the far end of this tunnel. Reaching it, I yanked the lid up. Inside were a number of throwing knives - much fancier than the ones I had - and a number of assorted gems and chains. Stuffing my pockets with the jewelry, I only looked up from my task as a large portion of the cave wall crumbled and sank into the now murky water. With one last scoop of the gold chains and the gems, I took off toward the entrance. A chunk of earth struck me on the back, nearly knocking me face first into the water. A rock struck me on the head, scraping down my forehead and face. Wetness spread over my cheek but I didn't stop to check.

Only when I was clear of the tunnel and scrambling onto more solid ground did I inspect the damage to my face. A gash extended from my temple to my cheekbone, bleeding rather heavily. "It's okay, face wounds just bleed a lot. It's not serious." Pressing a hand to the wound, I sit for a bit on the edge of the sink hole. That had been rather close, but I was alright and I had gotten a number of knives. The gold and jewels were a bonus that counted for nothing in the arena. Even so, I clung to four particular gems - one ruby, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond. Me, Danny, Basil, and... and... and Delta.

Clutching the stones to my chest, I finally went to join Danny and Basil.
