His breath was knocked from his skull in one foul swoop and Kite stumbled forwards in the swamp. Gentle branches had caressed his back in the sweetest way that they knew how, Kite was sure. There's no way the gentle little tree could have meant to hurt him. He turned in the mud and reached out to grasp one of the retreating branches before it left him.
He felt the leaves fly through his fingers and Kite felt warmth.
He'd forgotten about it again, blast it all, the feeling that friendship was.
He didn't know whom he'd last hit, didn't know what he'd done. The feeling of his spear being shoved through someone's head was still in his hands, hateful and itching. He wiped his hands on his pants, wishing he had something to clean himself with, anything. The water here was strange and smelt of nothing at all.
He missed the salt.
The sea air.
There was screaming all around and Kite didn't know who was who anymore. He was tired, it was getting too hard to tell them all apart. He wondered if they were alive still, his friends. Two more cannons had erupted since the first one and Kite knew that meant two more people were dead.
He thought about Danny and Basil and something inside him that had been mostly whole crumbled a bit more.
He was scared for them.
He wasn't sure about himself, if it was worth it to be afraid. He was always two seconds from having his head detached from his body anyway.
He was pretty sure that the only reason he was still alive is because they had allowed him to be. Girls like Scout and Celia didn't need useless things like him.
Useless, murderous things though, that was another story.
He shook his head.
He was being strange, bitter.
Not himself.
"Kite," Scout shouted, "Behind you!"
He turned stiffly like a wind-up soldier and stabbed his spear forward, movement crisp and automated.
And all is wasted in the sand
