The escort of the district stepped out onto the stage, a smile plastered across his face as he stared into the cameras that surrounded it. It was time once again to choose two children to compete in the Hunger Games, and it was his job to do so.

"It is time," he said as he stood over the impatient people of the District, "To once again send two of our own children to the Capitol to compete in the Hunger Games. Let us begin the Reaping!"

He did not look to see the reaction of his district before reaching into the glass ball that held the names of the female children. "Ladies first," he announced, pulling out a slip of paper. He unfolded it and read out to the crowd, "Scout Krigel!" He then reached into the other ball. "Villain Shoal!"

OOC- RPing is allowed. If you wish to volunteer, let the tribute post first either accepting or stepping down from their place for volunteers, and then post. If the tribute doesn't reply by Tuesday, June 7th, a staff member will post saying that volunteering is open. Please do not post until you see this staff message. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.

Tributes, please do not make your acceptance or denial of your spot in character; instead, please leave an ooc note at the end of your post stating whether they accept or are stepping down for volunteers.

Also, and this is really important: If you have been selected as a tribute and plan on going into the arena, we HIGHLY SUGGEST you take some RP Tutoring lessons ASAP. It doesn't matter what level RPer you are; everyone can use a little help. RPing a tribute is a privilege; if you're not going to put the time and effort into making your posts the best they can be then you can count yourself among the dead.. It's not a requirement, but please please please just consider the lessons. They'll help even the most advanced RPer.

It's Reaping Day and everything is terrible. Everything is Leon's fault. Leon is terrible. If only Scout looked more threatening baring her teeth at his sleeping windows, petulantly huffing at the drawn curtains, cursing not-so-under her breath —

The jerk probably isn't even home, the golden halo of his hair splayed out on someone else's pillows for the night. Safe. Comfortable. Sleeping soundly. "Hey, Stupid McStupidface!" She yells and stomps a yellow tulip growing at the edge of the sidewalk, but it's too early and no one is around to hear her. No one is bothered except for the tulip, wordlessly wailing insults up at her. (Godzilla girl! screams the wronged flower, I hate your fat, fugly human feet! Die, bitch!)

Today is the day of the flower's long, slow death. It dies hoping for Scout's. It is not the first thing on this earth to look upon the Krigel girl's face and quietly dream of a sword slashing it to bits, throwing stars whirling through her eyes, her pretty pink tongue punched down her arrogant throat so she chokes to death on the taste of her own self-proclamations of grandeur. Schoolyard jealousy has beaten the flower to all of these thoughts. However, the flower is the first one to hope these things today. It is not the last.

"I hate your dumb, trashy whoreface!" Scout continues yelling at Leon, who continues not to hear. His house does not seem particularly offended on his behalf, so she tries harder. "I hope you get sex pox in your eyeballs! And puss starts spontaneously spewing out your ears, oozing down your neck in horrible, bubbling, noxious rivers of raging infection! Every bubble a bursting fart so heinous your lips start to rot from the stench!" Somewhere around the phrase sex pox she has to bite back a rage-laced laugh, but by bursting fart every word is undermined with giggling. She feels a little better, maybe even a little sorry... At least for the tulip caught in the crossfire. (The flower does not forgive her. It is still yelling: Fuck you! Fuck you! Leon's sex pox upon you! It does not giggle.) A frown fades the last echoes of the tantrum from her face as she stoops to kiss the flower's feet. "I didn't mean it," Scout murmurs. (Satanic human bitch must die!) "I don't mean any of it..."

She runs away from the slaughter of innocence because this is what she wants to do. Today her name is too much, Leon's crown too heavy, Nat's death too real. Any other day Krigel is glitter upon her skin, flecks of gold scattered amongst her freckles. The world looks upon her face and finds it yet more beautiful when named: Scout Krigel, the Victor's cousin. She is exactly as attractive as a Krigel ought to be, maybe even unfairly so when she smiles just right.

This smile is not accidental. It is what she wears when Declan leaves her at the Reaping that morning, kissing his cheek in a flutter of panic before hiding it behind that perfectly composed expression, effortless and easy. The sun lives in her heart. She is radiant to the point of being blinding — "Scout Krigel!" — which makes it hard to catch sight of the fear in her eyes. Even the high definition cameras can't capture the way her soul screams not me! Not me! Not me! If she were Leon's cousin on his mother's side, if she were named differently, if she weren't a Krigel... She knows this wouldn't be happening to her. Today's sacrifice would be one of the remaining Libertine girls or a La Torre — someone else to fill the required quotient of familiarity. Bloodlines. Scout hates that word, hates everything, hates Leon.

She scans the crowd in hopes that she is Halcyon Antoinette, too important to be sacrificed. Beretta Corléon is dead ~~and her sister is next~~. Scout will not be saved and so she smiles heaven upon the earth to prepare herself to become just as angelic as everyone has always praised her to be. With its last agonizing breath the tulip laughs. In its stead the audience goes: I hope you're beaten with your own severed leg, stomped with your own foot, smashed apart by your own body betraying you. And that someone peels the flesh from your living hands before breaking the bones free to wear as gauntlets, so with your unwilling hands bound upon theirs you can choke yourself to death before having your remains torn apart and used as scrap. Die, Krigel bitch.

They mean it.

Die.

Roger Strangways-Teach steps through the crowd, directing attention away from the stage with a half-cocked wave. His fingers splay in a loose V: peace, where he was marching off to war; victory, where he'd all but set himself up for death; Villain, where he'd just become that boy's hero.

(His ship made port three weeks ago. He went home yesterday.

It was easier, he'd learned long ago, not to go back.)

"What's your name?" they'll ask him onstage.

Jolly Roger. Jolly Roger is the biggest lie he's ever been asked to tell. The complicit silence that says everything's fine, that says nothing's wrong instead of we're just refusing to fix it.

He doesn't want to lie today.

"Any volunteers?" He's not sure if the call is out loud or just screamed across every face on the stage.

Brig will. His little sister had all but said so two years ago —

Now that's an opportunity.

Hmm?

That's the best time to volunteer. Victor's family? Get all of the attention — from the cameras, from the sponsors, from your mentor. That's when you do it.

Roger would've believed her more if Beretta Corléon had come home with that crown, but the fact that he couldn't even remember District Two's other offering from those Games was just as telling.

He glances across the crowd, catching her eyes before she caught anyone else's attention.

He'd spent the better part of his life looking after his little sister. Brig's got to grow up eventually, and she can't do that with him hanging around and running interference between her and every fight she tried to pick. Better to grow up in the rubble of District Four than whatever fresh hell lay at the bottom of those glass bowls.

And for him?

Roger Strangways-Teach may be jolly in name only, but that doesn't stop him from being happy to try his hand at death.

"Me."
