Bright sun reflected off her blonde hair flashing in the sun while her wide eyes locked on the stage watching her cousin disappear behind the doors of the justice building. Evelyn stood silently as the crowd went away. Chatter broke through the silence filling her ears as every single word crawled through her mind. But as soon as the path was clear, the tiny girl waddled towards the stage holding her hands awkwardly at her side wondering what her parents would say. Five years ago the reaping was foreign, and the confusion she felt when Esme left still lingers in the back of her mind, but now it was real. She knew what happened when the escort pulled a name from the balls. She knew what happened when someone stood on the stage on this day every year, but this one was different because her cousin was the one looking off the stage, and not someone else.

Her tiny hands wrapped around the bottom of her dress holding it loosely while climbing the steps, and when she was standing on the stage all she could think about was staying away from the edge to keep herself from falling.

The doors were heavy, yet the opened with little work unlike the doors at home. The hinges didn't creak, and she knew right away they were taken good care of. It was a shame, really, that she only saw them open and close on this terrible day because she wanted to explore what was inside only she never wanted to cross the line. This time she could explore without any problems in the world.

Her eyes widen when she stepped inside looking at the different pictures. Tiny hands ran across the fabrics on all the cushions until a peacekeeper stopped her asking her to state her business. "Bailey. See Bailey." And she stood wondering what was going to happen until they ushered her towards a door before opening it. "You have three minutes." Evelyn nodded her head before leaping inside, and her voice was mixed with surprise, sadness, and joy as she screamed for her cousin.

"Bailey!"

73rd Hunger Games

Bailey Truus

There is nothing to fear if you don't fear death.

The sun's warming vines slither across every inch of Bailey's exposed skin. Far above her and the world she knew as nothing but a phase towards hell, several white clouds floated through the blue sky. Each cloud lightly dancing upon the winds of the Earth while Bailey stood frozen like a statue upon the planet's crust. She was surrounded by precisely none of her closest friends considering she cared for practically no one else any longer. There was no room for emotions, no room for friendship in a world designed just to prepare someone for eternal slumber.

Gasps rippled like waves through the crowd of safe children as the boy reaped alongside Bailey was sent to the ground in a shocking turn of events. However while Bailey watched the peace keepers handle the boy who attempted to flee his fate she felt no pity for him. Not even a single humane ounce of remorse trickled down from her brain. All Bailey could think of when she looked upon his actions was that the boy was a fool. Just as so many others he was afflicted by the curse of false life. He believed he had a life he could preserve whether it be his own or a family member's, but that was his mistaken thought. There was no life to save, death would claim each and every life whether it be in the Hunger Games or not. He along with so many others are simply addicted to prolonging the inevitable.

Moments after Bailey's District Partner had been apprehended she turned at a tug on her arm towards the deathly doors of the Justice Building. As far as Bailey was concerned she had already walked up the steps to the Court House of Death the moment she mounted the stage. By walking through these doors she was accepting her verdict of death over life. The same verdict she ushered Esme towards only five years earlier.

Ornate features and grandiose applications littered the building Bailey had entered only two times prior. The first to bid farewell to the cousin she had condemned, and the second to retrieve her lifeless body back from her harsh sentencing. In addition to now where Bailey walked in shackles towards the grim reaper's court. Every instance was connected to death, and Bailey could already feel that the next time her body ventured through this building life would no longer be running through her veins. All it took was a single guilty verdict.

For a while Bailey sat within the silence of her waiting room watching the world continue to turn onward out of the window. Her teeth drummed against the surface of her thumb's nail as her legs were drawn tightly to her chest. Bailey contemplated how many helpless girls had spent their final moments in District Ten within this very room. 72 of them, the only exception being Saffron Lowe who was now given the job in helping bring home another survivor. A job about as easy as preforming a triple bypass surgery on a dying patient's heart.

Bailey's normally scheduled numbness was interrupted by the sound of little steps waddling into the room. The moment the door clicked quietly shut and the little girl's voice echoed through Bailey's ears she turned her eyes towards her. Seeing Evelyn standing before her one last time caused Bailey's stomach to turn. Her poor cousin, riddled by mental struggles, was the only one of her family to even venture into bailey's chamber of no emotions thus far. So when she stood impatiently by the door Bailey felt a sigh leave her chest through her lips.

"Hey Evelyn come sit next to me." Bailey said softly to her cousin as she let her legs fall from her chest to the floor and allowing more space to form on the sofa chair beside her. If there was one thing Bailey was never good at it was showing those she actually cared about that she really did care. Perhaps now she could at least ensure Evelyn didn't carry the same belief that her cousin hated her like Bailey only believed Esme did.

Evelyn was lost trapped in the middle of the room as the door closed behind her, and her blue eyes locked on the huge chandelier hanging in the middle of the room. Lights reflected off the window bouncing across the room as the sun peaked behind the clouds. For a moment her purpose was lost, yet she stood on her toes prancing around awaiting for further instructions, and she couldn't help but wonder what her parents were doing. All the blood pooled in her cheeks turning them a bright red. One step after another she tiptoed in place shifting her weight from one side of her body to the other. Excitement bubbled inside her, but her face was clear of emotions. Lips pursed as she looked around waiting for a chance for someone to turn around all that had just happened - her mind was made up, yet she couldn't move before the voice of her loving cousin bellowed through the room. Bailey's soft voice met her ears with a gentle tone, and Evelyn turned quickly to her cousin. Her face lit up for only a moment before she waddled towards the couch with her arms extended wide flapping in the non existing wind.

Tiny fingers moved across the soft fabric, and Evelyn couldn't help but wonder what it was made of. Maybe one day she would find out, but right now her priorities was talking to Bailey. Figuring out what she was going to do, and Evelyn wanted to say goodbye. Ma and Pa said she was too young to understand, but she wasn't too young anymore. She watched Esme said goodbye. She watched from the shadows as Ma and Pa cried themselves to sleep. She watched as they buried her cousin beneath the ground all those years ago. The innocence was gone, yet it still existed in the depths of her fragile mind. Evelyn nodded as she took a seat next to Bailey, and she immediately wanted to hold her hand, but she resisted the urge. Her eyes locked on the carpet floor taking in the magenta colors wonder how anyone could ever afford these. But they didn't belong to just anyone. The Capitol owned this, and she knew that to an extent.

She paused for a moment before raising her face forcing herself to like Bailey in the eye, but she had to look away as the camera inside her brain flashed picture after picture over several seconds. It was something most wouldn't understand. Something that she would never fully grasp, yet she knew it was the way of life. For Evelyn it was her normal, and that was all that mattered.

She took a deep breath allowing it all to fill her lungs until they reached the full capacity. And she stopped before exhaling the breath into a fragile sentence terribly formed. "Love you. Stay safe. Promise?" Evelyn knew she was away, and she knew Bailey's name was called like Esme's was, and she knew Esme returned dead, yet she hoped with all inside that Bailey had the will to survive, yet her words weren't finished as another wave fell free. "You can. I know."
