Your story began on a cold winter evening, quiet and peaceful.

You were told that snow gently coated the ground in a thin, glittering layer of white, and that the winds themselves were silent. It was a night of tranquility, where even the factories were muted and the sky mottled with patches of stars.

Outside, all was calm.

Inside, it was anything but.

You had attempted to enter the world two weeks early, well before anyone expected. A doctor, a few nurses, and a midwife had all been called from a nearby hospital, as with the suddenness of the labor, there had been no time to move from the house.

It was a difficult process that left both Mama and yourself exhausted, and by the time you emerged the sun was peeking through the window, casting a golden glow on the room. As Mommy held you for the first time, the ray bathed your face in its light and warmth, prompting you to utter your first cry.

And as the nurses laughed, the midwife made an offhand comment on you looked positively angelic in the sunlight, prompting Mama and Mommy to share a look.

Minutes later, your name was decided and agreed upon, for the midwife was right.

You were their little Angel.

From a young age, you were aware of a subtle yet noticeable difference between you and most of the other kids.

Since the Dark Days, Three had prided itself on the collective and individual intellect of its citizens. That intellect was what kept your district as the primary hub for new technology that rivaled even the likes of what the Capitol could create. That intellect is what kept the majority of Three's citizens out of poverty and in lives of relative comfort. That intellect was what allowed it to match the key industries and locations of the so-called Career districts in wealth and, as of late, victors as well.

But while other kids boasted of intellectual achievements and exceeding in all their classes by wide margins, you barely managed to maintain a passing grade in even your simpler classes. While other kids discussed complex mathematics or physics, your head started hurting whenever you even opened a math book. While other kids mentioned individual invention projects in hopes at landing in a high-ranking job, you had neither the skill nor the interest to partake in such activities.

As you eventually grew older, you came to the realization that had been nagging you for years.

You were doomed to be average in a world where status was determined by intelligence and where excellence was the norm, and in a world like Panem, that could likely prove fatal.

You were too quiet and honest to confidently lie your way to the top. Your mothers were loving and caring but were both daughters of lower class families, striking out the option of using family connections to land a place in the top.

There was only one place for those without smarts or deceit or money, and that was the factories, a life where one was condemned to a life of physical labor and hardship, a life that generated ridicule to those that lacked not in money, but in manners, a life for those that were less than stellar in a place that demanded excellence.

You certainly seemed like an ideal candidate, at least in the physical sense. Mama was not a small woman, and that set of genetics had seemingly passed themselves on to you as well. You stood at an imposing six feet two inches tall, towering over peers and adults alike, and you had the stocky build that you would normally see on a Career from two as opposed to a citizen of Three.

It was uncommon to see such a person around home, one built like a tank but lacking above average intelligence instead of around home, and though you were already fully aware of it, there were others who made sure you never forgot. School was a breeding ground for conflict and competition and disdain no matter what age you were, and you found that your size did little to deter those truly intent on making your life miserable.

If it hadn't been for them, well...

You're not sure how you would have survived otherwise.

You first met them on your first day of school, when you were not quite six years old.

Even then, it was undeniable that there was some sort of strange connection between you and the others. Something about you just clicked, just felt...right, in a sense.

You remember the energy and intelligence of Esther and Andy, who even then showed signs of greatness. You remember the cool, laid-back demeanor of [druggie], who, even then, showed signs of disinterest in the majority of the rest of the world. You remember the compassion and worry of [mother owl], who showed a maturity beyond her years, keeping an eye out for the rest of you.

The five of you became fast friends within a few days, forming a bond that, unbeknownst to any of you at the time, would become a crucial part of each of your lives.

Indeed, as time went on and the innocence of childhood was left behind, the bond between the five of you - collectively known as the Housewives, a childhood name that had stuck, only grew stronger with age. While other connections withered and crumbled away, each member seemed to find a purpose in one way, shape, or form - except for you.

As you grew from child to man, you watched as the friends around you did the same. Esther was the youngest of all of you, and yet she seemed to be the most brilliant, as well. You watched with a mixture of pride and envy as she excelled in her classes and held her head up high with a self-confidence you found yourself lacking. She was everything you were not, and yet you still found her to be almost like the little sister you never had. The caring, loving, sometimes mutually annoying relationship between the two of you was unique, but it was strong as well.

That's why it hurt all that much more when her life spiraled down the drain.

You could only watch in growing concern as the combination of her father's untimely death, her mother's depression, and her new job that even you could tell was taking a negative toll on her mental health added up, turning the once strong, proud girl into a shadow of her former self.

She was falling apart at the seams, and yet you stayed loyally by her side, just as much if not moreso than the others.

Andy was a unique one, taking up a hobby of painting and often engaging you in long, philosophical conversations. The boy with flaming hair was one of the few your age matched your height and could look you in the eye without craning his neck, though that was where the physical similarities ended. He was tall and lean, lacking your physique but making up for it in strength of personality. His skin was pale and freckled, while yours was tanned and smooth.

It was almost as if your looks conveyed just how different your ideologies were, as well. You were a realist, whereas he was anything but. Many of your conversations were spent listening to him talk of dreams and stories, things that were impossible anywhere except his mind.

You found the stories interesting, yet deep down you knew that's all they were: stories to keep one entertained and optimistic. You found that occasionally, you'd have to gently interrupt a thought process or explain that dreams and reality were two very different things.

Andy would take to the clouds for his stories, and it was your job to keep him grounded.

Each of them had saved you when you were younger, given you friends when you needed it and a place of safety outside of your own four walls.

They had imbued you with the strength to stay afloat during your existential crisis, and that was a debt that you would forever owe.

Now, it was your turn to protect them.
