Bastard.

It was a name intended to be an insult, a name that was found in nearly every sentence that others used to describe who you are.

It was also a name you wore like a suit of armor, a name you used as protection from the very people who attempted to wield it against you.

You didn't see it as an insult, simply a description. For it was who you were: A bastard, an illegitimate child, born from a married woman and an unknown man. Your birth mother, though you knew her growing up as Mrs. Alder, had remained tight-lipped about who the father was, and luckily, or perhaps unluckily, you shared both her blonde, almost-white hair and blue eyes, making the task of figuring out who the father was nearly impossible through physical similarities alone.

That didn't stop the theories from flying abound, however. Some theorized that you were the child of a Peacekeeper, some of who had a reputation of breaking their vows and impregnating young women, especially in the outer districts. Some theorized that you were the child of a member of a notorious local cult, one who had sired many a child both with and without his wife. Still others believed that you were actually legitimate, and that the late Mr. Alder had accused his wife of being unfaithful after she became pregnant mere months after her first child was born, and that he had simply walked out, unwilling to deal with more than a single child.

Whatever the case, the nickname "Bastard" hung over you like a cloud, unable to be chased away or dispersed no matter what effort you put into it. So instead of fighting it, you embraced it, enveloping the cloud and nullifying it with your own powerful aura.

For it was just a name, a description you took in stride like you took being called outspoken or hot-headed. It was a part of you like your trademark smirk and pale skin, and that was nothing to be ashamed of.

Besides, even before the nature of your parentage was revealed, you still had a family, one that cared for you and loved you like you were one of them. The word "bastard" meant as little to them as it did to you, and for that, you were eternally grateful.

Until that fateful morning in early autumn, you had never known any family but the Xu family. As you had learned when you were older, Mrs. Xu had been a family friend of your birth mother, and had been in a far better place both emotionally and financially then she had been at the time. Your mother had already had one kid, and between him and her husband practically abandoning her in return for her infidelity, she had been in no place to raise a second child so soon after the birth of her first.

Your adoptive mother and father, while they had just had a daughter of their own around the same time as your half-brother, were more than willing and able to care for you. Though their tanned skin and dark hair was a stark contrast to yours, it mattered to you as much as the word "bastard" did - that is, to say, not at all.

Family wasn't just about blood in your eyes. Family was about who cared about one another, who you trusted with your life and vice versa.

The Xus didn't have to take you in. They could have refused to take you in, sealing your fate in one of the many orphanages around the district, but they had regardless.

And for that, you owed them a debt you would never be able to pay back.

You were scarcely a few days into your seventeenth year when she appeared.

Life was good despite everything. You had passing marks at school, a part time job at one of the factories, a sister who also doubled as your best friend, and a loving family. You even had grown close with your half brother, Leif, although your relationship with your birth mother was icy at best and non-existent at worst.

Life was good for a bastard girl living in District Nine.

But then Calypso Delacroix had approached you one day. You had known her by reputation if nothing else - everyone talked about the warring gangs scattered throughout the seedier parts of the district, and Calypso herself was one of the most notorious.

So when you recognized that the girl approaching you on your evening walk home from work was her, you had eyed her with suspicion, fully prepared to run or put up as much of a fight as was needed to lose her.

What ended up happening proved to be entirely the opposite.

She claimed that she knew the missing link in your parentage, knew the answer to the question that you were most involved in around the district. She had claimed, your eyes wide in disbelief, that her father was actually your father as well, as the late Mr. Delacroix had lacked a faithful reputation to his wife, to say the least.

Understandably, you had treated the situation with skepticism and wariness at first. After all, it wasn't every day that a powerful gang leader made the claim that you, plain, ordinary, hot-headed bastard you, were related to her.

She had then given you a set of letters that had been written by your birth mother and the man that she claimed to be your father, unveiling many hours of lust and love, of heartbreak and happiness, of a forbidden relationship that had resulted in an unexpected consequence: you.

You had looked up from the letters in shock, not bothering to question how she had obtained the letters (you were smart enough to put together that there was likely little a prominent gang leader couldn't get), but rather, why.

Why was this powerful young outlaw searching you out of all people?

Apparently, the fact that you had Delacroix blood running through your veins was enough incentive to deem you worthy to join her ranks.

The two of you parted ways after Calypso gave you a quick briefing, explaining the code, the origins, and the current situation of the gang. She said that whatever decision you ultimately ended up making, she would respect, but added that she thought that at the very least you deserved to know who your father was, who's blood also ran through your veins.

And then she was gone, disappeared into the rapidly encroaching night as if she had been some sort of phantom, and you were left with potentially the biggest decision you would ever have to make.

It took you six hours to come to a conclusion.

You slipped out in the wee hours of the morning, taking few possessions and leaving behind a short note, thanking your adoptive family for all that they had done over the past seventeen years, and to not worry about your well-being.

From that moment on, you renounced your name of Xu, renounced your blood ties to the Alders, and became a Delacroix.

It didn't take you long to adjust to your new life. It was almost as if you had been born for it, born to be a member of the Wolf Pack.

In your former life, you were ordinary. You had two siblings, one by name, one by blood.

Here, you were anything but ordinary. And your two siblings had turned into an entire family.

It's been months, yet it's felt like years. While you had been skeptical of the idea at first, a bit awkward when you first joined, today, there is no denying it.

You were born to be Delacroix.
