There's something reassuring about knowing that I can take down anyone with my fists alone. It's an incredible feeling to be in a fight where your opponent faces you head on, fists raised upwards and you know that the only thing standing between you and a total crushing is your fists. The pulse of the fight, the dull aching in your fists makes me feel so incredibly alive. It's also a powerful reminder of how incredibly human I am. There's nothing more jolting than the sensation of a fist against the side of your face, the feeling of your jaw cracking, teeth splitting. The glob of blood spat onto the floor of the pearl white ring as you messily wipe the blood from your brow; there's always an excited glint in my brown eyes, a small dancing on my lips. Father never seems to tire of reminding me that there are more ways to fight. That in the arena I'll be at a disadvantage against those with weapons. But where is the fun in that? How is it not fun ducking and weaving out of the range of an axe, only to slip past their guard and send a fist into their face? What's the point in fighting if you can't find the fun in it? The thrill of the adrenaline that pulsates through your veins. "You'll die that way," Father says. And if I die that way, I know I'll die with a smile, I'll know I died having fun. I don't fear death or losing, I fear that one day I'll forget what it means to live, what it means to feel the world beneath your fingers. Pain is a constant reminder that I'm alive, and when I die I hope it's a permanent reminder that I lived and did not fear life.
