CAPRICIOUS KING
Capricious sauntered the Training Center, her entourage forming a protective barrier. Two Peacekeepers, a stylist and her assistant circled. She mostly talked to her assistant, reviewing the day’s agenda. Now that all the tributes had arrived and were settling in, her schedule gone from bat shit crazy to actually impossible. And she loved it. She could sleep when she died of some exotic and tragic disease, which they would name in her honor.
Whenever her squad strayed near the front of the Training Center, she asked the Keepers to step back. She bent her chin to give the appearance of shaming the paparazzi at the windows, even as her stylist fluffed the train of her skirt. She lingered another moment, ensuring at least a hundred photos had been snapped of her outfit, before turning back to the depths. She needed to sign some releases and review a few interview requests. She could do that on the move, thanks to her exhausted assistant, but it would look more official if she spent a few minutes in her office.
They would their way through the corridors, taking the long route. Capricious wanted to see the tributes for herself. Sometimes, the styling team could only do so much on the dusty ground in the Districts. She wanted to feel confident of her twenty-four pretty faces. Of course, even dressed up and powdered, none of them would hold a candle to her victor, Harbinger –
“Rhodes,” she said breathily. Her circuitous path had brought her right to the tributes’ elevator. And there he was, in all his rugged glory. She couldn’t tell if he’d just stepped out of the elevator or he was boarding it. No matter.
She offered him a slow smile. “Pleasure to see you,” she said, and for once in her life, genuinely meant it. She didn’t risk insulting herself by offering her hand; according to assistant, he was unlikely to accept it. Instead, she took her time scanning him from head to foot while her security team milled between them. After a moment, she sighed satisfactorily. “I don’t suppose you have a moment for your favorite Gamemaker? Shall I dismiss my friends?” She flicked her pointed nails at the two Keepers. Of course, even if he said yes, she might keep them around. After all, she was planning to die of a disease, not strangulation by the most attractive man in Panem.
