Seeing Ree's face in the night sky had torn Semper apart. He was numb to the world, even as he swam against the current to another island. He didn't care where he ended up -- there was no use in going on. What was the glory of winning these Games, anyway? To get to say that you killed twenty-three other kids? That wasn't something he wanted. It would be better just to go down fighting instead of living to tell this tale.

Washing up on shore unconscious had been somewhat of a blessing. Not only did he get to rest, but he escaped reality. In his dreams, Ree was still alive -- no wounds, no blood -- just the way she had been before the Games. He had reached out to her, but as soon as he did, she disappeared. He had cried out her name, listening to it echo, but she never returned.

If I die t'day, I'll see her.

Opening his eyes, he pushed himself up off the ground, looking out at the island. He didn't know what was there, but he figured that as long as he still had his knifes, he was fine. Taking one blade out as a precaution, he stood up, spotting a figure in the jungle. Sami....? He thought, very cautiously and slowly heading towards her.

Semper was surprised to see how quickly Sami had attacked him. As the arrow lodged itself into his abdomen, he staggered back, reaching up to the arrow. Holding onto the shaft, he tore it out, feeling his flesh being sliced. How many arrows does she 'ave? He thought, wincing and grinding his teeth. Surely she must've already wasted 'bout four on m' already.... Holding onto his knife with a tight, trembling hand, he lunged at her.

She didn't want to hurt him.

This was the first time she'd fully realized that. That really, when it all came down to it, nobody wanted to hurt each other. All of them did it to survive. That's why, when she attacked Semper, she whispered:

This was lasting far longer than Semper had originally hoped. Assuming he wasn't going to die, he really didn't like the fact that Sami would have to be killed in order to achieve that. Taking a life was not something he wanted to do, but what else was he supposed to do in the arena?
