There's an intangible but unignorable tension in the air this morning, and it feels as if the day is hanging from a single thread, just moments away from snapping and collapsing. I can feel it in the skin of my face, which feels unnaturally tight - I am aware of every strand of hair across my forehead, every tremble of my lips and tongue and I try to prevent myself instinctively grinding my teeth. It's in the brightness of the light, piercing white through my window in that cold, cruel way that can only come in the biting middle of winter. Even though I know there is activity all around me, down in the street people tug their clothes tightly over their hunched backs and walk determinedly as ants, still there seems to be an altogether unnatural silence everywhere.

Is it just me that feels like this? Surely I'm not the only one who's bearing the electricity that seems to be charged in the air. With the feeling shrouding me, hanging like some decaying spirit, a curse, I leave my house with something that is almost fear leaving a bitter taste in my mouth and make a direct path for the woods, which I know this time of year and day will be glistening with a fragile, beautiful layer of frost. The stillness of nature is the only thing that will be able to bring me stillness, now.

I lounge among the brown bark on the dying trees. The freezing winter air slices into my body like a knife, but I don't mind it. My injured leg is dangling off the edge of the tree, hanging loosely in the wind. It's been two years since my little cousin was snatched from me like the final leaf on this tree flying away in the wind.

It's almost time for more to be taken away, more pain, more suffering, more death. The capitol inflicts all of this upon us, and it's frustrating to me how everyone just sits back and lets it happen. It's frustrating how parents just let the capitol take away the children they have raised since birth. It's frustrating how the district has grown numb to the pain of losing a child. When Iris died, it felt as though everyone just didn't care. It felt as though the world just moved on, even though it stopped for her.

My brown eyes move to the ground as I hear a noise beneath me. I wonder who is trotting among the forest. Maybe it was just a squirrel that got past the peacekeeper.

Tendrils of frost and ice spiral over the tree branches like tattoos, their pointed ends beckoning me into the woods' welcoming heart. Under my booted feet, the crunch of the pale soil is soothing. I immediately feel calmer than I did when I was still at home. Nevertheless, my hand snakes into the smooth leather satchel that nestles against my hip and I find one of my small carved totems to hold there. In the pocket at the front of the satchel, the knife that crafted that wooden model and many others lies securely. I think that finding a place to rest and using it again today will calm me significantly.

A whorl erupting from the bottom of a tree trunk makes the perfect resting spot, and I lay my coat down to claim it as my own. Unpacking my belongings feels almost ritualistic, as bit by bit the nest I've made becomes a humble artist's campsite. Yes - this is exactly what I needed to relax the knot of tension in my chest. When my tools and pieces of art are laid all around me, I stop, and simply breathe. The silence is luxurious.

-but brief. I look up as something comes unstuck from the branches above. Everything inside me seizes with hostility as I make out the silhouette of a waif-like girl obscurig the harsh winter sunlight. "Come down!" The words are fierce but wavering with uncertainty as I expel them. Even though I have a small knife, the stranger's high position still gives her an advantage. Today is not a day I can bear to feel endangered.
