Sage Scarborough

Sage had been approached by a boy with a familiar face. He hadn't remembered his name, but when the boy introduced himself, he could recall that he had heard it before. His name was Affron, and he claimed to have seen Sage around school before. Sage didn't doubt that that could have been the case. After all, despite not having a large amount of friends, he still did see a lot of people around school and hear their names here and there. Affron seemed familiar to him, and seemed friendly enough, especially when he extended out his hand to shake Sage's.

Since Sage had his money clenched in his right fist, he extended his left to shake. Luckily, that was the correct hand to use, as otherwise, it would have been a bit awkward to shift his money from one hand to the other. Sage gave a smile and introduced himself to the boy, wondering if Affron had a second motive for approaching him, or if he was just trying to make friends. Sage was hoping for the latter.

"I'm Sage," the skinny boy said to the boy that seemed much more well-built than him.

Affron seemed to enjoy talking with Sage, from what the younger boy could tell. Although, he wasn't always the most observant individual, meaning that he could be wrong, and often, when Sage was wrong about people, things didn't end up going well. He made sure that he kept an eye on Affron as the boy decided to walk next to him, though, as he still didn't completely know him. Affron had asked if Sage's name was like the spice, which made him laugh. After all, almost all of his family members were named after spices.

"Haha, yeah," he laughed in reply, "Funnily enough, my sister's name is Parsley," he said, deciding to bring some humor to the conversation. It was kind of humorous to some people that the Scarborough family had named their children after spices. Deciding to try not to be noticeable about his suspicions that Affron may have a second motive, he unclenched his right fist that had the money in it, and transferred the money to his left pocket, which was opposite the side that Affron was walking on. He wanted to be safe, but not too suspicious.

"So, what prompted you to say hi to me?" Sage asked the other boy with genuine curiosity.

He thought Sage was interesting? This almost took him off guard. Sage couldn't think of anyone who'd ever said that to him before. Normally, if anything, he was told he was boring. He hated when people called him boring. Yeah, he didn't have the most exciting life, but he didn't see himself as boring. Sage raised an eyebrow at the boy. Then Affron told Sage that he looked like he needed a friend. Right then, he wondered if he really looked as lonely on the outside if he was on the inside.

Sage smiled at Affron. "Thanks," he said, "Friends are definitely something I could use. Although, do I really look that lonely?" he laughed awkwardly as he said the last sentence, wondering what had given away his need for companionship.

Affron was still being nice to Sage. He got a sense of relief from this. Perhaps the boy didn't have another motive aside from finding a friend. They were getting close to the bakery as they were walking, however, so Sage knew that he may have to say goodbye to Affron soon, unless he felt like following him into the bakery.

As the two approached the bakery, Sage opened the door and a little bell chimed to signal him doing so. "You're welcome to come in with me. I just have to buy some bread," Sage told Affron. He paused for a moment before speaking again. "Do you need any? I'd feel kind of selfish if you couldn't get any for yourself, to be honest," he continued. The boy was willing to split the loaf of bread with his new friend, for the pure fact that he was being nice to him. With Sage's constant bad luck and lack of friendships, it was good to have someone that seemed to care about him. He figured, if he had a friend, he may as well treat them well.

Sage's new friend seemed ecstatic that he had been offered bread, which made Sage feel all the more happy. He loved having the opportunity to help people, and it seemed that for once in his life, his bad luck wasn't present. He'd always been extremely unlucky, but today, he made a friend. Parsley wouldn't be mad at him for helping someone else out by giving them some of his bread. After all, she didn't even know that Sage had enough money saved up to buy a whole loaf of bread.

Nodding to his new friend, he spoke to him again. "Alright, I'll give you some," Sage smiled. He went up to the counter in the bakery and asked for one loaf of bread. He paid for it with the money he'd had in his pocket. He had had just enough cash to do so. Thanking the baker, he then turned back to Affron and broke the loaf of bread in half, giving one half of the fresh, warm bread to him.

"I hope it tastes as good as it smells!" Sage exclaimed.
