Another meal. Another lonely piece of bread on the plate under my nose. And I don’t really want to swallow it. Everything feels wrong here. I can’t sleep, eat or drink without thinking about how many people used to do the same things here before me and how many of them have survived until this very day.

I pull Aileen's bracelet out of my pocket. What is she doing now, I wonder? And what about Luke? There is no one in that kitchen to mess around with him anymore. How will he live now with Aileen at school and mom at work? And what does he think about me? He must be really angry with me. Dammit.
The paperclip construction in my hands is sparkling in my hands. I put it on and stare at the roses. Do I like roses? Maybe. But dandelions and thistles are my favourite flowers. When Luke could still walk and we were both little kids, we used to make dandelion crowns and put them on each other. And the thistle just looks a lot like me.
The bracelet is throwing shining circles on the table... I wonder how many friends I have had, except for my family... There is nobody to remember. Only that girl, Camilla... But I haven't seen her since we last met. She probably didn't enjoy my company much, after all. Damn. That is too sad to think about. I just have to eat something and go train again. No more distractions.

"Cause I'll just make the same mistake again..."

Things were looking up for Molly. She'd met several tributes now who seemed to share an interest in anything that shone, though of course none of their fascination could equal hers. Nevertheless, she no longer felt like the Capitol was trying to deprive her of her favorite type of item. (My shinies!)

No, the Capitol was playing a game with Molly. It had sent her into a room where the shiniest of objects lay not in the center of the training area, nor in its darkest corners. The tributes themselves were the key. The more she got to know them, the more shinies Molly found. They wore the glimmering objects around their necks and wrists, tucked them away into their pockets, or stored them in areas normally only accessible to them. Getting to know her fellow tributes, however, always revealed the hiding places of their light-friendly objects, and Molly had already gotten to play with several other tokens.

As she approached the lone girl at the table in front of her though, Molly knew she would not have to work hard for the shiny in front of her. It was already there, in plain view. And Molly wanted to take a look. Each step coming quicker than the last, Molly practically ran to the girl. "Mind if I join your shiny?" She blurted it out before she could stop herself, but then smiled at the silliness of what she'd said and quickly corrected herself to "Mind if I join you?"

"Mind if I join your shiny?"

That was weird... Who could even say such a thing? And what did the person mean? I raise my head slowly and see a girl standing in front of me.

"Mind if I join you?"

Well, that sounded more reasonable. However, I still don't understand what she wants from me. We don't even know each other. I shrug my shoulders nervously and answer:

"No, I don't mind."

I don't sound very cheerful, though. Having to talk to someone at dinner will only make me feel more miserable. I don't usually care what people think about me, but I don't want to make any enemies here. That's why I can't be my normal self most of the time and always feel uncomfortable about it.

And damn. I have completely forgotten about Aileen's bracelet! I pull my sleeve down. Hopefully, she won't see it. I have no intention of discussing my sister's gift with anybody. I just don't want to think about what I have lost.

"Because I'll just make the same mistake again..."

The girl looked up at Molly, seemingly startled. The light in her eyes was dim, as if she sought to shelter it from Molly's gaze.

"No, I don't mind," she replied, her voice heavier than the weights at the lifting station. (Is something wrong?) Sure, there was lack of shinies around, but the girl had one of her own, so there was nothing to be worried about.

Just as Molly was thinking about questioning the strange tribute, the girl's eyes darted frantically towards her arm and she reached down to hide her bracelet from view. "There's no need to do that," Molly quickly uttered, placing a hand on the girl's wrist. She meant for it to be comforting, but she also desperately needed to see that gorgeous piece of jewelry again.

As she started to roll the girl's sleeve up, Molly looked into her eyes, and spoke in a calm tone, barely above a whisper, "It's beautiful. Let it stay in the light, where it belongs."
