The sun rises over the horizon, and like clockwork, you rise along with it.

It's a routine you've held for years, first by necessity, and then later by choice. You sit up and stretch as the first rays shine through the curtains, a cool breeze of salty ocean air caressing your face with its familiar touch.

The stretch concludes. Back returns to mattress, and a grin slowly spreads across your face.

It's a new day, a new chance, a new opportunity to experience all the world has to offer you.

You greet your mother in the kitchen with a cheery hello before turning your attention to breakfast. Your father has already left for the morning - their restaurant serves during all three main meals of the day - and she is not far behind, leaving you to prep for school in solitary silence. You don't mind, though, for you'll be seeing them when you go in for the afternoon shift after school.

Breakfast is consumed and the short walk to school is completed. The public school system is on the small side compared to many other districts from what you've heard, due to the wealthy investing their kids in private education and the ambitious or fearful sending them to the Career academies, but you don't mind. The education is still quality, the company is still enjoyable, and it's somewhat comforting knowing that there are other kids who don't invest in the Career lifestyle for one reason or another.

After all, not everyone was made to wield weapons for the purpose of killing, and not everyone was built for the lifestyle that came with such a path. And even though it took you some time to come to terms with that, nowadays it's a fact that you are quite comfortable with attributing to yourself.

School ends, and your second favorite part of the day begins.

From education comes labor, though you only define it that way in the loosest sense. For really, as your father once said and you have since come to believe, work is only work if one does not truly enjoy what they are doing.

And if there's one that you love almost as much as sunsets and nighttime beach walks, it's making delicious food.

The crowd is surprisingly large for a Thursday afternoon by the time you walk in the door, but that does little to deter you. After all, in this industry, customer base means everything, and larger than average means more money to go your family (though, being fifteen, you are technically too young to get directly paid, so your parents improvise) and the other workers alike.

Not to mention that the more people there are, the more time you'll be able to spend focusing on doing what you love.

So you deposit your school supplies in the back, don your apron and a smile, and get to work.

You're still learning, so you've taken to shadowing one of your parents or one of their workers to learn every bit you can around the restaurant. Whether it's assisting a waiter with taking orders and cleaning up tables or in the kitchen learning how your father makes his famous shrimp gumbo, you approach each and every task, no matter how menial or how difficult, with the same barely contained enthusiasm.

Your math teacher had once told you that such enthusiasm towards the simplest of things displayed incredible naivety, and that one day it would very likely get you hurt. But you've decided that even pain can have its merits, and that those living in fear of getting hurt are missing out the greater things of life.

After all, today you get to tag along with your mother, which usually means getting to try a little bit of everything. But be it bad or good, each and every task you'll undertake will be the same thing - a chance to learn.

And that alone makes it worthwhile.

The sun has long since begun its descent by the time you and your parents close up shop for the night, the last dying rays of the day's light causing shadows to stretch for meters and turning the oranges and reds from the evening into the cool purples and blues of the night.

By the time you get home, it's disappeared entirely, the moon beginning its own shift in the sky, bringing with it the first of what will inevitably be countless stars to grace the night with their twinkling.

A slow grin creeps across your face, for your favorite part of the day has just arrived.

It is during this time of night that you appreciate living in close proximity to the sea the most - the beach is a mere three minute walk from your house, and with it, the comforting rhythm of the endless expanse of ocean.

It is there that you experience your most enjoyable pastime, more enjoyable than socializing in school, more enjoyable than learning how to cook shrimp gumbo at work, more enjoyable than just about everything, for it is simple yet so much more at the same time.

Indeed, you could lie on the beach for hours, gazing up at the many thousands of stars and losing yourself in the rhythmic pounding of water on earth as your mind wanders to this and that.

And tonight is no different, even as the air chills and the general white noise of neighboring houses fades into the background of the everlasting roar.

You are at peace.

The moon dips beneath the waves and the sun rises over the horizon, and the routine begins again.
