Kennedy Fowley

There's a moment when he almost regrets joining the election for District Ten mayor. It's a subtle feeling that rises through his bones like a wave of anxiety. The worry of people not liking who he was at all. There's a fair share of problems in District Ten, but a fair share of things that we right too. All he wanted was to make the district better for anyone. A better place that Riven would have loved to see if she were still around. Everything felt lost as he could see his sister's smile as he would win the election. Things to be set up by the Fowley family for the greater good of the district. There's always a catch to peace.

With peace comes sacrifice. A sacrifice that some wouldn't want to commit to, but sacrifices were meant to be made. That's what he was spending most of his late nights doing up. Writing speeches, planning events that he wanted to do, and running hypothetical situations through his head. The horses were fed earlier that evening. His siblings seemed to support him, at least that's what he could get from them all. A frown pulls at his face as he's tired. Tired of not being able to figure out what goes where and what promises that he could promise.

Eyes catch at his younger brother who walks past at probably the wrong moment. A smile pulls at Kennedy's lips as he can see his brother in the late evening. Words fall from his lips trying to grab his younger brother's attention.

"Hey! Jasper! Quick question for ya?"

He waits for his brother to stop and listen to him. There's a moment that he realizes that this is what he wants to do with his life. If he were to win the election, he'd be able to do so much for them all. He'd be able to do so much for everyone.

"What type of public event for the district would ya like to see thrown?"

Kennedy has always been the more ambitious one among us. He's always getting new ideas, coming up with ways to improve, testing and readjusting. He's always been like that.

But I can't say I expected him to run for the freaking mayor of District Ten.

I'm not sure how many people have figured it out yet, but all his talking about prospering, creating a system to get rid of all our trash, improving the words, being there for the people...it's all a load of crap. It makes me sick, sitting there and listening to him. His goals are unrealistic. We've been under the rule of uncaring mayors for almost seventy-six years, and he thinks he can change that? Yeah, right. Even if he pulls a wild card and wins, all he'll accomplish is becoming another puppet for the Capitol.

Ma doesn't think so. Ma believes in him, says he's gonna do great things, says he's gonna turn this place around. I don't like to contradict her because I don't like destroying her hope. She lost all her hope for nearly a year when Riven left us. Then this election happened, and suddenly she's filled with false smiles and a pseudo-aura of excitement. Of course, she doesn't realize it's fake, and so I leave her be. I leave the paper-thin, joyful shell she's formed around herself, and I dare not touch it, because I'm worried I might break her as well.

Kennedy, however, is a different story.

"Hey! Jasper! Quick question for ya?"

His voice is easy to recognize, elated, the smile becoming evident before I even look at him. The whole thing sickens me.

I reach my hand into my pocket, clenching the few coins Ma gave me before sending me to the market.

(Go get some oranges, for Reaping Day.)

"What type of public event for the District would ya like to see thrown?"

I look him up and down, from his shiny shoes to his neatly slicked back hair.The only thing mildly unkempt is the sandpaper-bristles dotting his chin.

"An event?" I let out a scoff. "You're all doing a decent job already with this circus act."

All it takes is a spark to feel himself losing control.

Jasper has always been kind of an ass in the way he treats their family. Venomous words that are laced with harm, but he knew his brother. They weren't meant to be true, only to harm. It was all in good fun sometimes, but this felt different. Eyes catch his brother's hands going to his pockets. Instantly, he knew it was ma who was sending him to go get something. Something for the reaping was his guess, as it was coming up soon. Even with the elections going on, they still plan the reaping like a death sentence every year. The smile falters for a second as he listens to his brother speak to him. An event is all Kennedy needed. Just something that the whole district could enjoy.

Eyes glide up and down his body checking his appearance. A hand instantly goes to his hair in self consciousness.

"An event?"

His brother scoffs at the idea. It's almost painful to hear him scoff.

"You're all doing a decent job already with this circus act."

The smile comes back for a second on Kennedy's face. There's frustration behind it, but he wants to laugh more. A circus wasn't a half bad of an idea. People loved seeing others look ridiculous. It was meant to be a jab at Kennedy, but he was used to them. Used to being jabbed at by people. School wasn't easy after all. He learned how to deal with the blows with his own blows. His voice escapes his throat in a joking manner. Smile still plastered in a toying way now.

"Not a bad idea brother. Though, if you wanted a circus, you could have just asked me and I would have made you the clown. After all, it'd be a good look on you."

My brother forces a smile, but it's false, cut out from paper and pasted to his lips in an eery fashion. Getting him to smile was easy. Getting him to be genuine about it, well, that was always a challenge. But today I'm not trying to make him smile. I'm too frustrated, too angry at the world. Rarely is there a day that I intentionally give him a reason to smile.

He brushes away the jibe, I can tell. The wheels are spinning in his mind, searching for a comeback. I can see it behind those grey eyes. Grey eyes that look like her's. Mine do to, Ma tells me, but I don't like to think that. I don't like to give her the chance to haunt me anymore than she already is.

Kennedy's voice pulls me from the chilling thought.

"Not a bad idea brother. Though, if you wanted a circus, you could have just asked me and I would have made you the clown. After all, it'd be a good look on you."

I don't wait to give him a response. "Shut your trap, Kennedy." I snap back, patience wearing thin until I'm certain it's about to snap. "I don't know how you think this will change anything."

I nod towards him, the way he holds himself, the way he does his hair and dresses and keeps his shoes clean. If he were wearing white, I could almost mistake him for a Peacekeeper.

"I hope you realize how stupid it is. How stupid all of this is." I clench my fist, force it to relax. I know he's got a temper hidden under those kind eyes and charming smile. Under all that perfection, there's fists ready to fly. He doesn't have much use for them now that she's not here anymore and he doesn't need to protect her.

"I hope you realize that all you're doing is turning yourself into a puppet."
