I stand on the stage, my mind clouded with thoughts yet again in the haze that falls over my mind while I'm not paying attention. How could this have happened to me? Someone else is meant to be standing up here, surveying the crowd with tear drops shimmering behind their irises. I am meant to be down there, waiting for them to be taken away so I can leave and go back home and sleep or do something that isn't preparing for my demise.
My mind whirs and clicks, trying to find a way out. There is always a way out. Maybe someone will step up for me? Maybe some crazed soul will save mine, but no. There is no hand in the crowd waving for the peacekeepers attention. There is no cry of volunteering. The only thing that breaks into my senses is the sound of my mother quietly sobbing over the deathly silence that awaits the next tribute.
They call his name, I don't know who it is. At least none of my friends will die with me.
I stand on the stage for a bit longer while the escort makes an unintelligible speech, then I am roughly grabbed by peacekeepers and pushed into the justice building to await my parents.
They don't show up.
I guess I'm dying all alone.
I make my way to the train, boarding it, my stunned senses barely taking in the breathtaking array of beauty.
I make my way silently towards somewhere, anywhere I can sit down and take in everything that's happened. My hands gently grasp the edges of seat which I gently move down into to await my death.
