Atticus Manor

Trying to make a deal with himself was almost as difficult as making a deal with a con artist. At one moment, Atticus Manor can agree on all fronts, but by the next, his body would cave back into the craving. The ‘one final sip’ turned into him pouring a second glass of whatever he was drinking at the time. To his brain, his very cautious brain, these drinks were turning into a necessity this time of year, not a pleasure.

Two more unlucky people had part of their fate in his hands now. The boy, Ree, and the girl, Adelaide. One was reaped and the other volunteered. The past six weren’t so lucky, ~~probably because of their piece of shit mentor,~~ but this time, Atticus hoped, things would be different.

He heard the train-car doors open and close every moment or two. It was probably the train operators or the escort for Three. They’ve seen him drink before… he didn’t need to hide it from them.

Atticus took one more sip of the glass before the entrance to his car opened, and by then he made another promise that it would be his last of the ride. He couldn’t let the pages of his already shredded story get smudged. He couldn’t let a second year in a row not noting the people he met along the way.

Everything was bright and shiny and soft and decadent and she couldn't get enough. From the moment they stepped onto the train, Adelaide felt herself transported, more than just physically. She wandered from room to room, pausing even in the transition cells between cars, just to admire. She picked at the screws, pulled and pushed at the door handles, licked the wall paper. No dust. Not even a particle. The fixtures gleamed and someone had even thought to fit the train with crown molding.

Oh how she loved all of it, this train that would carry her to her next death.

After exploring for a few minutes, she felt the tug to the dining car. She brushed right past the boy, Ree?, who had joined her march from Three. She offered him a half heart smile and then pinched the edges of her skirts, dipping into a short curtsy before Atticus. "Victor Manor," she greeted him formally. And then, as she came to standing, she reached one slender arm out and upended the glass from which Atticus had been drinking. Before he could exclaim, Adelaide picked it up and inspected the now empty vessel.

"Shame. In my dream, you were drinking tea, not swill. There's hardly enough particulate to see -" she squinted, narrowing baby blues. "Looks like a candle to me, a new beginning. Do you see it?" She offered the cup first to Ree.

Seconds blur into minutes scattered into the sunlight breaking through the windows, somewhere along the line I quickly decide that it's pointless to hope for a visitor and one sidewards glance into the mirror tells me why. A part of me wishes it would hurt and another part is wishes it didn't.

I've grown so numb that it doesn't surprise me when every non-verbal action only serves as a reminder that I'm the disappointment of the family. Stupid fucking idiot -- as long as I could get my next hit I'd be fine.

But what about the last?

"No visitors?" The peacekeeper asks and I shrug my shoulders, carving a smile into my face and hoping I don't bleed. "I guess not." I answer and he leads me to the train in complete silence. It's better that way, it's difficult to break down when your lips are sealed.

I've never been a foreigner to luxury, by District Three standards we were always the ones who were well off, despite having a family name laced in the blood of tragedy but even the site of the luxurious train makes my jaw drop. I don't know Atticus, I spent most of the 72nd high off of my fucking face, but I know he's a killer and he had what it took -- it's a hell of a lot more than I've got. And my district partner? Well if you'd willingly lay your life on the chopping block then you've got have something about you.

(Then there's me. Just Ree. Just fading.)

She brushes past me like I'm not there, tips the liquor he's been slowly poisoning himself with (well fuck) and speaks. "Shame. In my dream, you were drinking tea, not swill. There's hardly enough particulate to see. Looks like a candle to me, a new beginning. Do you see it?"

I've grown up spitting in the face of superstition, believing in nothing but dumb luck and myself. I take one tired look into the vessel and sigh, voice trembling. "Just looks like an empty cup to me, but if that candle can tell me how I can make it so my 'new beginning' won't end with my blood in the sand then I'd love to hear it."

It doesn't take a prophecy written within the stars to know that I could never be an Atticus Manor.

Atticus Manor

The girl was the first to enter the room. Her presence was a little bit unsettling, almost as if her respectfulness to him was a joke. ”Victor Manor,” she called him. Nobody ever used that term before with him, even when it was his first year as one. Atticus didn’t deserve to become a victor. Most of the other ones, they had some kind of heroic storyline to go along with. Atticus? No. Sol, Danny, and Ezero all should’ve won their battle with him. Each would’ve made much better victors.

Adelaide took the glass from the table next to Atticus and examined it. I bet she’d know whether something’s poisonous or not, then. he thought. She went on to talk about how she didn’t take him to be a drinker of alcohol, more likely tea. She continued to talk about the glass being a candle, more to Ree than to him. So Atticus took the chance just to observe. He’d butt in when necessary.

Ree didn’t see it the same way, but he was willing to go along with it.

Atticus sat, quietly, trying to see what he could do, what he could say to make Ree take see the glass as half full or see what he could do to make Adelaide’s presence feel a little less intimidating to him.
